Pouring Foam in My 16' Starcraft Jon Boat | Salvage to Savage #3

Back again with work on the boat. Today we pour foamed the subfloor of this 16' Starcraft Mod-V.

So once you cut into it water will enter foam maybe next time pour foam and lay a piece of plywood over it with plastic underneath. it will come out perfectly level when you lift wood plastic will stay an barrier will no be compromised. Saves megga time..

I did the same build 35 years ago. 14 ft. mirrocraft deep fisherman. Gutted interior complete. Installed flat floor,small deck w/built in storage built box across where center seat was w/flip top door on each side (gas and battery). Padded and upholstered top of 54 qt. cooler to set inside of box. 2 pedestal seats and carpeted throughout. All pressure treated 12x4 and plywood construction bout 200 lbs. of wood. A long story short, I researched the flotation of styrofoam and it only floats 50 lbs. per square ft. Glad I didn't have to see if my boat would float because I would be pretty wet!!!

When I did mine I had a piece of plywood with wax paper on one side. I poured one section at a time then put plywood over the top and kneeled on it to prevent the foam from expanding to high. I let any excess bleed over to the next section to be poured. I also had a removable piece of plywood cut to shape with the wax paper where you used the pink foam. It work out great and I didn't need to do any sanding. I wish I had done a video when I did mine but I didn't. I recently pulled the floor up on mine (marine grade plywood) and after 12 years the foam is in perfect shape. Good luck on the boat.

I think I’d do something similar if I were to do it over again. The cutting and sanding was time consuming and messy!

The pink foam board and spray foam will disintegrate if it comes in contact with gasoline. It is not rated or approved material for this use. It worked as a temporary stop for your foam pour, but isn’t the right material to use. It would be better to block those gaps with other material that can be removed later or an approved foam insulation.

I bought a boat just like that one this summer it is a 1969. It had trees growing in it I watched other guys on youtube and thay put the floor on and drilled holes in it and poured the foam in. I like your way better Thanks for the video

Someone said when you cut into the foam, it’s not sealed anymore and could take water. I’ve never experienced it, but I coated my foam with an oil based paint to help reject water from entering the foam cells. Thanks for watching and good luck with your boat build!

I'm following your build w my 16' MirroCraft Deep Fisherman project. i was leary of pour foam but you kind of de-mystified it. I can see some advantages for structural support. I was going to just stack pink foam. Keep the vids coming!

I considered doing pink foam as well, I think it’d work just fine for the water displacement/buoyancy aspect but I decided to go with the pour foam for the extra structure like you said and to help keep the boat as rigid as possible. Thanks for following along!

I used all of it. A few pods got overfilled, I think I gave some good pointers in the video about what I would’ve done differently if I remember correct. You may have a little leftover if you take those tips. Otherwise I filled my low spots with spray foam and it seemed to work good.

I’d only wish I did plywood for the cost savings and it’d be considerably easier I think. But I’m hoping that the weight and longevity of the aluminum makes it worth it in the long run

You said you want the foam to be as dense as possible. Not really. You want the foam to be less dense than water. 2lb density foam will give the greatest amount of buoyancy as it has more air entrained in it. 90 percent of the reason you put foam in the boat is safety. if you take on a rogue wave and/or can't pump water out faster than the boat is sinking the foam will provide the bouyancy to keep it afloat with water in the boat and at the very least slow it down from sinking completely. The other 10 percent reason you pour foam is for lightweight structural support. thats where some people use 4lb or 6lb density foam instead of the commonly used 2lb foam. it is more dense and thus stronger and more rigid. 👍

Foam gets waterlogged after time if you never pull your drain and let it sit in water but it is meant to be waterproof

Oh right. I put foam in for buoyancy, if this boat takes water it should still be buoyant and stay at water level until those cells of foam get soaked/full of water.
