as an opera singer but also as someone who grew up on grunge.. one of the most remarkable aspects of Layne’s singing is how he maintains such efficient ‘adduction’ in the chords. The vocal cords are consistently closed in the middle voice without him pushing air through.. the production isn’t “leaky”
@lindsayp9691

You think he had lessons?
@tenorandrewowens
@tenorandrewowens 4 ай бұрын
@@lindsayp9691 in his case, no.. nothing beyond exposure to school choirs, much like Jerry. Most rock guys bristle at the idea of ‘voice lessons’.. there’s even a great moment in Metallica’s ‘Some Kind of Monster’ docu where James is warming up with his cassette tapes from a vocal coach. He said he was worried the guy was going to make him try to sound like an opera singer.. so he didn’t see him often.. just sang along to the recordings from his coaching sessions.
@tenorandrewowens
@tenorandrewowens 4 ай бұрын
@@lindsayp9691 it’s very much the ‘non classical voice’ thing to avoid formal instruction because what you’re doing is so natural and instinctive. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s why these guys usually only see professionals when they’re having vocal issues.

People like Layne and Richard Ashcroft out of the Verve are total naturals and geniuses. It's not easy producing and projecting the sound and tone that best suits what you're trying to convey. The breathing, focus, control is what its about. It's not easy and I remember singing as a kid and auditioned for St Paul's choir. It's for sure a different type of presentation and the art is being able to adapt your voice to the music too. Sadly I lost it when my voice broke but I do sing baratone so I suit Johnny Cash rather than Layne's brilliance. The world sadly lost one of the greatest singers ever in my humble opinion but it's subjective.
