Great layout plan & concept! Don't forget to add damaged Amazon cartons and debris along the Alameda Corridor route...😂 I have one question for you, though; where are the gangs and homeless encampments along the L.A. Riverbed??? 🤔😉

@@VSLAModelRR - Ha-ha! I'm just busting your chops... I certainly like the depth of field effect with the two separate bridges against the L.A. River backdrop. It really gives the viewer a real glimpse of how congested the area really is today. By the way, I love the work that you did on your UP 1105. It reminds me of the UP Genset assigned to Montclair yard that used to work the branchline industries in south Ontario, CA. It was tagged up mercilessly, too, when I last saw it in 2009.

As someone who is also trying to design an urban industrial layout for modern UP/BNSF, this is a fantastic inspiration! I loved the old layout and always looked forward to new videos. Now I can't wait to see this one come to life. (I still think it would be super awesome to add something like a removable connector to the Violet Alley Layout so it can be included in operations 😛)

Yeah, I tried to figure out a way, violet alley in real life is where that scrap yard is, but there isn't room there.. I could always drill through the wall where that LAJ yard is as Violet Alley right on the other side.

I thought your other layout was awesome, especially the bridge scene that you kept, but this ...Oh My. I think an easy fix for the stack train would be to use one engine and one dummy with a light board. No worries about speed matching falling in/out of sync.
@VSLAModelRR
@VSLAModelRR 6 ай бұрын
I don't mind speed matching, I've done it with my local power, I just need to do it, just not high on the priority list right now. I had a couple consisted and it was pretty cool but I think it was a BNSF and UP together lol, need to make them company matched as well as decoder matched too. Soon..

Your new model railroad is awesome. I have observed the UP and BNSF in the areas you are modeling for many years because it is so facinating. You have inspirfed me to do something much smaller though. What type and dimension of plywood do you use as the layout base? Can't wait to see your next progress video.
@VSLAModelRR
@VSLAModelRR 5 ай бұрын
Thanks! I just used 1/4 inch sanded for the tabletops and then put 1.5 inch or 2 inch foam on top. I don't see the need to use anything thicker but the layout is in my basement which is climate controlled.

How deep is your LA River? I am looking at doing a similar concrete river (not LA) and was wondering what a good depth is for these type of rivers to include the slopes and walls etc? Am looking at 75mm ? Yours looks like it may be more? Thanks
@VSLAModelRR
@VSLAModelRR 3 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for asking. The river itself is 2.5 inches (65mm) deep. I screwed a 1x3 piece of lumber to the bottom, and the styrene walls lean up agiainst it for now. The walls are two different lengths. The front right, sort of by the Fascia, is 4.5 inches (115mm), the angle is shallower thus the longer cut. The parts by the bridges and then back to the wall are 3.75 in (95mm) long. The LA river has different wall angles as it rolls around so I used different sizes for different looks. I was just eyeballing it and that looked good to me. I think for the prototype I'd need a shallower angle by the front part.

@VSLAModelRR - The riverbed bank slopes look proportionate to how I remember them when I grew up in L.A. The slopes were much lower and shallower than the San Gabriel or Santa Ana riverbeds. Great work! 👍
