In the early 90s when i was a kid, I received a hornby intercity 225 track set up, got right into it spending pocket money on trees, figures and model buildings. Fast forward to today. Still have it but it's up in the parents attic so watching your videos is always a nice thought of early child hood. Your level of detail and the attention you put in is outstanding. Keep the videos coming

I will say this is a lovely model and youve done a lovely job to it, as of recent ive bought a class 59/0 (004 if you were wondering) by hornby and as far as it goes on detail its superb but not as good as the dapol 59 but it is an amazing runner and for a railroad plus model im really happy with it, just to get an 8 pin decoder next!

Hi. First of all congratulations on a set of videos you have made on building a model railway. I am approaching retirement and would like to resurrect my interest in the hobby and found your videos excellent. Your attention to detail and information given is second to none. Its been about 40 years since I last had chance to spend time on this hobby and a lot has changed in that time with dcc etc. I am only used to the old analogue way of doing things. Watching your videos has given myself and others endless information on how to go about things, wiring, electrics, track plans, etc etc. Thank you and keep up the good work. Steve.

Absolutely superb. (As always) Next level modelling and attention to detail. I have been extremely fortunate in my career to drive all the 59s (bar 59003) and they are seriously powerful workhorses. For reference, the head light switch was marked high/dim, but in 2017, only dim was the option. Always a treat to see you've uploaded. Thanks.

A well put together layout, everywhere I look I see convincing detail and the weathering on the locos and rolling stock are all specific to year and usage. Likewise the grime and soot on the layout generally is neither overdone or underdone but looks believable in my opinion. Look, one of my simple pleasures in life, whenever I see a long freight train, is counting the number of wagons as they go past. You’ve posted several clips of this during your video, but have cut them off before the train had fully passed, so I’ve been denied my little piece of joy. It’s not big, and it’s not clever, so behave. 😂

I just love watching an artist at work. You brought back to me the excitement of watching a layout at the model railway exhibition at the agricultural hall in London when I was in my teens with my dad. It also dare I say it brought back memories of some of the “weathering” of the North London line (now overground) I used to take to college. Thank you so much.

Hi Richard, Once again you show how an already good model can be converted into a superb one. Good on you for figuring out a simple solution for the lights and muddling through it, and my goodness was it worth using that brilliant tint paint! 🤓 It really does a great job of ‘scaling down’ the lights, otherwise it’s more like a searchlight! 😄 The sound on it is terrific too. Reminds me of when I lived in Tooting in the 90s when I’d often see a Yeoman train if I sat by the park having a sandwich in the sun. Instantly loved the 59s and it’s great to see how you have kept the engine lightly weathered. I certainly can’t remember ever seeing them particularly dirty myself 🤷🏻‍♂️ I do so very much love that van train and the permanent way train you have, but I think this has overtaken it as my favourite on your layout. It really is a joy. Great to see the Thumper out on the branch again too 😎 Cheers mate 👍🍀🍻

As with all forms of modelling and diorama creation it is knowing when to stop and the balance on your layout is spot on. Also, small details like the effort taken with the doors can just be enough to distract from the overall look. The effort was worth it as can be seen with it running. Just a great video to watch and learn from.

A fun fact about the Class 59 and 66 is that they were built in London, Ontario, Canada, at the GMD plant there. This is only about 3 hours from my hometown, and as my hometown is right along the CN Kingston subdivision, I would see 66s being transported on their way to Halifax for shipping to the UK when I was very young. I had also seen some on the docks when visiting family in Halifax.

Hi Richard. Thanks for another great video. When I ordered the ARC Village of Mells class 59 i was led to believe that it would come with Smoke & sound fitted. Alas, no sound but thanks to your work on yours, i've ordered the ESU Loksound 5 chip from Roads & Rails, so will be installing them with the EM1 speaker. Have you thought about fitting a sugar cube speaker as well to improve the sound in the higher frequencies. I feel the EM1 can sound a bit dull with certain sounds (like the spirax valve & wheel flange squeal), just a thought as i'm going to try that with mine. Thanks for the tip with the lights, they do look too blueish so toning them down makes them look much better. My 59 has a different light arrangement so i'll look into the correct working senarios & poss link them out like you did. As i'm no good with an air brush, i'll be leaving mine in the stock factory finish, it's a cracker of a model (like you said) so i'm pleased with it as it is. Thanks again for the great videos, always both informative & entertaining. 👍

Excellent update Richard, loved the history bit, really informative and entertaining. Also totally understand you wanting to improve the model and make it your own. Never get the opening doors thing myself either. Also very strange Dapol didn't get the lighting correct. 🤔 regards Graham

This is brilliant, once the Gaugemaster GBRF 59003 gets announced I shall definitely at least do the headlight config fix as well as fixing the awful temprature used for the cab light!

Couple of things I found with my Yeoman Class 59. The gears and drive shaft connections looked very dry and not greased. I also found that I had to sand the paint off the back of the name and number plates to make them fit better.

Fantastic stuff as always Richard with a well researched story of class 5 freight motive power, the class 58's were always a British Rail 'could have been' locomotive, if only they had been geared for maximum 60mph running and had SPEX anti-wheel slip control fitted. I think they would have been an entirely different beast and maybe got nearer to the class 59's superior haulage capability, and probably been around a while longer.

The 58 was certainly a missed opportunity. Very much the underdog/forgotten loco. One of the reasons why I've always liked them. Cheers

Cracking job. Fwiw, Games Workshop have acrylic washes for enhancing flesh and other details. They would dry faster as an alternative to your oils. Hth
