I think the best thing about Lazav is that in the stories he apparently loves to show up at inter-guild meetings by revealing himself to have been the janitor the whole time, leading to other people having to play a game of "what cupboard did you put Steve in this time?"

I'm not looking through the comments for someone to point it out but this man literally saved the day during the War of the Spark by perfectly mimicking Chandra so well Dovin "You suck because your slouch is three degrees off" Baan couldn't tell. I'm not saying he can get it. What I am saying is the next time you think another character can get it, you better be sure that isn't just Lazav on a thirsty day.

Notably, he couldn't actually copy her magic and had to make do with having a flamethrower. Results in some humor and/or terror when you start to think of how he might "copy" some other creatures in the same manner (Eldrazi titans hit the graveyard briefly much like Commanders now do).

Lazav literally takes the thing you worked on and puts his name on it like it was his idea. I had a lot of fun with this deck until I started primarily playing digitally, then tracking became a real pain

@@maldhound Table Top Simulator is good for it. You can just make copies of the cards which is great. Have a lot of fun with my Lazav deck.

As my favorite decks are blue / black steal and I primarily play online (since, y'know, I don't want to be even MORE broke than I am) I've had to figure out workarounds- what I've found works best is to just make copies of whatever card you're stealing and have the opponent turn theirs face down / go into the graveyard / exile and then just pretend it doesn't exist till something happens to the card you've stolen. This even works for cards like siphon insight where you exile one of the top two cards from on top of an opponents library to cast, where you scry the top two cards, determine which card you want, and tell them either "top to bottom of library, second card facedown" "top facedown, second card to bottom of library" which lets you copy that facedown card to cast later.

My first commander game was with this man. Net decking did not tell me how to use him but I did get 3 of him onto the field each imitating something different. Luck favors the prepared and by mimicking a hydra, you can do some funny things.

Depending on the hydra, he'd usually shapeshift into a dead guy. He's already on board when he becomes a copy, so he misses ETBs and as-enters replacements and would die if he copies a creatureball (a 0/0 that enters with +1/+1 counters)

This was my first commander that I constructed that didn't come from a precon back in 2013-14. Still have a soft spot for this card. Was a very fun deck to play when voltron was more viable in the meta than it is today. That said, with the shift away from board whipes to more spot removal, Lazav might be primed for a comeback.

Love me some identity theft in card games. Shapeshifters and copy spells are like a pendulum from a very joyful middle finger when you copy something obnoxious or big to mostly useless because there's either nothing to copy or your options are all niche combo pieces for the opponents deck that won't do much for you, but I have always enjoyed the "I'm playing your cards now" cards. I think it comes from having friends who were better at deckbuilding and had stronger cards when I was young and new to the game.

I just built a Lazav deck, and it's a bit crazy. It works best against someone who plays powerful creatures, because I will soon have multiple copies of the biggest thing on the field or graveyard. But it's weak against beanie decks, because there's nothing juicy available to copy. I had to put some big nasties in my own deck in case my opponents aren't obliging.
