Brent is a minimalistic artist ON PURPOSE. That’s his whole aesthetic, he literally in his own lane. If u gotta ask why BRENT FAIYAZ didn’t auto tune his voice (😂😂🤣) u shouldn’t be reviewing it period
@humanseason39

Um.... No one is saying that minimalism is bad, but you didn't peep that he was off-key on a few tracks??? Like where was the engineer that was supposed to keep him on-key?? That's the point of autotune (which I'm 99% sure he used, just as everyone else in the industry does) The critique wasn't just about the stylistic alterations that autotune can offer (ie that alien sounding voice), but more so that the tracks were literally not on-key....

Why is Brent being held to a high stranger than CB???? That’s some twilight zone shit. All that being said, joes critique leads me to believe that either it’s personal, or it just doesn’t benefit him to reasonably critique him. I mean after all, Joe been industry for a hot minute. Plus the pandemic may have affected the timing of the release of the album as far as when the album dropped after the singles were released. And when you make an album you’re trying to create a cohesive body of work. So if songs fit together to make that happen then you’ll include them no matter how long it was since the single was released. Plus the singles aren’t even that old. They came out last year.

@@jamilkadhim2366 well, for starters, knowing how to actually sing in key. Brent often sings sharp. The key could be in F-major, for example, and he would sing it a half-step up in F-sharp. It’s consistently off key. On top of that, since he can’t sing on key, he would further sing off key by going a half step even further, when the chord changes don’t even facilitate that. It’s not even playing outside of the changes like in jazz, which is a matter of superimposition of chords via a myriad of different techniques (Tri-tones, substitutions via 3rds, etc), it’s just incoherent singing and poor taste. Also, his songwriting is so-so. Lastly, the orchestration on this album was ehh. It was ill-placed. Sault does this better. I really think the issue with stuff like this is that people need to actually dig and listen to more music, and more variety

Brent best work still from start to finish is Sonder Man! It was so raw. At times you could feel the hood Melodie’s from the 90’s emerge. This Brent is a certified star. His sound now seems to be representing his post fame life. It’s dark and flashy for the most part. I found myself really wanting to love this project because I phuc w Brent’s music. honestly i think joe has heard so much great music in his life time, diff genres, artist, styles, content, etc that the bar and standard for the newer artist is so high they get harsh critiques instead of getting looked as another individual, another artist, another style whatever...ive had to understand that for my own musical taste lately...and with most the artist being inspired by other greats from previous generations it's hard to not almost compare. it's unfair. he went hard on brent and i understand bc i felt the exact same way..i just had to hear someone else say it. a lot of artist either sound like a bunch of other artist or are talented enough to stand out, AND just havent reached a level of greatness in their artistry but we as fans can hear the potential of them being great and it frustrates fans bc we expect them to deliver home runs for every project, every single, every feature etc bc we can literally hear the potential greatness of their talent but the formulas dont always hit so fans feel slighted...theyre artist first, entertainers second, business men/and women third. but all that gets handled in reverse order. business first, entertainment second, artistry third..gotta let these people be them, it's hard not to compare them to themselves and previous work and/or other artist. this why artist at some point be like man fuck this shit... even chris brown just said it and his album aint been out a full month, and thats chris mfn brown.

I see y’all saying how lazy it is but what would you want him to do instead? If y’all want an album full of 15 versions of _Talk 2 You,_ there are other artists you can go to for that. The reasons y’all are saying the music is “lazy” are literally the backbone of his style. For me the pitch changes for his voice is his signature and gives the songs more versatility. Without the pitch changes in the songs, they would get boring quicker, and no other R&B artist does that, so you call it _played out_ but if anything, it’s refreshing. As far as the beats, the most complex beat was _Role Model_ but there was so much going on that it took away from his actual singing. I like the song but it’s way different from the rest of the album, and it seems like that’s what y’all wanted most of the album to sound like, but nah.

@@humanseason39 The thing about that opinion is if that’s the case, what R&B do you like better? Chris Brown, Givēon, Summer Walker? Because most of the mainstream R&B is so much less predictable right? Like genuinely, what mainstream R&B right now is giving you more than pop hits? Like where the actual style of the music matching the style of the person. Brent’s sound is different than most of anything that’s as popular as where he is on the charts. Only thing I can compare him to is The Weeknd’s older style before he blew up.
@humanseason39

@@BrotherMalMusic I don’t think any of those R&B artists you named have great music. They each have tracks that are boppable here & there, but overall, the replay value for most of their work, isn’t there. None of them have timeless bodies of work, IMO. Maybe Chris Brown, with his older stuff, but even then, I don’t listen to his music. You named the most generic artists to compare to Brent & it didn’t really help your argument, bc I don’t listen to, or like any of their music. Brent’s album had moments where it felt like something interesting was happening but then it fell flat… the album was missing something & a lot of the tracks were literally off key &/or boring. I think the best thing Brent has going for him, is that his persona comes across genuine & that his stardom Is home-grown (unlike a lot of the artists you named who go through the mainstream machine & can’t live up to the hype because it’s fake!). His hype isn’t artificial, and that’s refreshing, and it makes for a stronger fanbase bc they genuinely fuck w/ him. I admire his hard work & consistency, and the fact that he didn’t take the easier path (going mainstream and then being forced down our throats with generic music until the machine decided to shelve him) Doesn’t mean that his music style can’t improve though.. I think my critiques are valid… but I imagine it won’t change anything about his music, because he said in an interview himself that he doesn’t make music for anyone else but himself. I think artists today who have timeless bodies of work inspired by R&B, are Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange” & SZA’s “CTRL” Not many others are hitting that mark, besides getting lucky with playable singles that the machine overly-pushes, here & there, or just having a few playable tracks on their albums. I prefer older r&b, from the 90s-2000s, as well as artists who’re crafting songs that have a bit more substance and complexity to the flow of the music, songwriting, storytelling, vocals, etc. The weekends early bodies of work are light years ahead of Brent’s rn. I’ll be back by the next album with the hope that Brent has grown beyond this point.
@BrotherMalMusic
@BrotherMalMusic Жыл бұрын
@@humanseason39 I agree with most of what you said actually. Real valid shit. Only disagreement is that it was “missing something”. This is a full body of work, including featured artists (which he doesn’t do much of on his albums) and even skits that played out a theme. He actually over delivered, imo. Do you actually listen to a good amount of his music? Because I had _Fuck the World_ on a loop when it dropped too, but over time, the only songs I’d go back to are _Clouded_ & _Been Away._ Now that was an album id say something was missing from. _WASTELAND_ literally has so much more substance as far as an album. The intro alone is something you’re not gonna find much of in R&B. It’s him explaining the role of his vices, and what vices are to him, in interview form, over some music that sounds like it was a for a movie score. As far as you and other people saying “he can improve”, this is the improvement. That’s why I asked how much of his catalog you’re actually familiar with, because if you’ve listens to his other projects in full, this one should feel way more “finished”. I honestly feel like a lot of people are trying to over explain the _reasons_ they don’t like the music instead of just saying they don’t like it.

I respect this. Do you think that the subject matter in these songs is the MAIN issue? I’m personally starting to get tired of hearing about and love, heartbreak and sex. But it also is the catch because that’s all R&B is so how can I expect to hear about anything else when listening to R&B but at the same time, even with knowing that, I can’t shake the want to hear about something else. I just feel like that topic is over done at this point. Or maybe it’s the way it’s being executed that’s getting redundant. Not too many people stand out and it really sucks to see music go down that path because music is my 1st love and when I start to feel like I’d rather listen to podcast, more than music these days, that’s when shit starts to feel weird to me because I normally would pick music over any form of entertainment but it’s just getting to the point where listening to people talk is more interesting than the music that’s dropping lately. @@Waters.. i understand..music is definitely watered down right now.. you gotta be picky or open to a lot of diff types and balance it all out to enjoy it these days..i even get tired of my fav artist sometimes. the issue is people dont have to be an actual artist to know how to 'make' music. that, instant exposure from the internet and it literally being the easiest art form to get into, kinda made music overwhelming over the last few years (last decade tbh)... podcasting is in the early stages of going through the exact same thing lol. music isnt in a bad space but it's definitely over crowded, and redundant in subject matter. money will bring fame or vice versa when it comes to music and most dont really give af about the actual art or subject matter which is cool sometimes bc it allows music to be fun when people arent as serious about it all the time, but when it suffers, it shows..it's all the other opportunities that come w the success in the music industry thats the real catch fr so it's been hurting the quality. im ranting lol but try some diff genres and/or diff sounds instead of music w lyrics all the time..it helps lol

The King of Pop title is a shorthand of “The True King of Pop, R&B, Rock & Soul” which is what Elizabeth Taylor called him at whatever award show in the late 80’s. But his music is really an eclectic mix of those genres and others…but that’s a different discussion.
