In this video, with the help of Melissa van Tongeren, professional make up artist and wigs, I will show you all the untold information about Wigs.
We will explore how to wear them, look after them and what the work behind them is. We will show you the styling process and how many hours it takes.
The art of wigs is still a mystery but watch the video and lots of tips will be revealed!
There are many factors on why in theatre we need wigs:
1- If the actor/dancer/singer is talented and right for the part with look, body, voice and way of representing the character, why turn her/him down just for the colour of hair? Wigs and make up enhance the character played and style of the production.
2- Production style, historical productions or modern/futuristic productions: most of the time there are styles in the production which are needed which must include costumes, wigs, make up and type of movements/dance. In this case we were working on Onegin set in Russia 1800s. It takes about 2 hours to style hair in a proper way and doing it to a cast of 40 people is pretty much impossible to achieve every day. If the wig at the end of a show is still in a good shape it can be reused few more times before it has to be washes and restyled completely.
3- Quick changes from a scene to another are also very common where the whole costume, hair style and set sometimes gets turned over in a matter of minutes. Sometimes we talk about changes that go between 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Can you imagine changing hair style to a group of 10 dancer/singers/actors in that amount of time? Impossible i say.

I don't see why anyone wants to see a show in the past, take a look at Broadway's Tuck Everlasting which is prove just sticking a bad actress in a wig doesn't make her good compared to other redheads

Completely agree with you! A wig or costume doesn't make a good actor. But there is not much we can do when Production team choses their cast. You are absolutely spot on! ;)

I work in casting so can perfectly well tell if another project makes a bad casting choice

Some others don't unfortunately....obviously you care about the standard and quality of the production unlike many.

Well I usually have written the piece so maybe Broadway should hire me, I certainly would have made Tuck Everlasting without the irritating lead
