We are scattering coffee grounds, vegetable scraps, alfalfa pellets, and leaves. Working them into the soil. Topping it with leaves and straw. When the straw starts greening up, we pull it back and the soil is good and rich.

I am a little behind on doing my pre-planting soil amendments. Thank you very much for the timely reminder!!

Annual bluegrass is the bane of my garden up here in McDonough. If I don't keep the soil mulched it'll take over.

We're in Virginia, so our season is done til spring now. What we did was compost pretty good, then we added alfalfa pellets ( horse feed) all over, then gathered up leaves and put them all over the garden area.

I’m in Southwest Florida zone 10b so this is our major growing season. But come spring I add fallen leaves, chicken manure and a mixture of top soil, peat moss and mushroom compost in layers. Then I plant whatever can handle 90 + degree temperatures! But like I said this is our growing season. This is our equivalent to everyone else’s spring!

I’m in Central Florida 9. Think I’ll try your idea. 5 years of backyard gardening coming up.

In my area the chickweed does germinate in the fall, but it really doesn't do much until early spring. The deadnettle does grow through the winter, though, which makes it the more significant of the two as a winter weed. If it's growing in the lawn, it does make a good winter forage for any bees that brave the few warm days in February, though.

#1 thing I'm doing is protecting primarily pepper plants alive through the winter. One variety of plants will not start producing significantly until this 3rd year - pubescens variety.

Hi. Do you know chickweed is edible and medicinal. Merry Christmas.

So is the deadnettle he points out (which might be purple deadnettle rather than henbit deadnettle). Of course, edible doesn't mean delicious!
