Planted my elephant garlic a couple of weeks ago. Have had my soft neck (Inchelium Red and Early Italian) in the fridge since early Sept and planning to plant it in a couple of weeks. Florida zone 9b and it's still been just too warm here so hoping and waiting for the cool down they keep saying we're supposed to get.

Garlic is so easy where I live. I just plant in November, mulch with leaves, and wait until June.

On the border of zone 6b/7a I used to set garlic in mid October. I'd have 3" shoots or more over winter. This year I held off until this last week. About half is a hard neck I've raised for several years and cannot remember what it was. About half is Inchelium Red, new this year and in the fridge for two months. I've a divider of elephant garlic, I'm cutting down on it. I haven't mulched the bed yet, that will get done this next week.

I am in Upstate SC and Chesnock Red hard neck garlic has grown well for me here. Gets a little cooler here in the winter than where you are though.

I enjoyed this! I love growing garlic! Mine went in the ground in October here in 5B and I won’t see green until spring. In reality some of the hardneck groups are more closely related to some of the softneck groups than other hardneck groups! To divide the true garlics into hardneck and softneck is actually an over simplification and not true at all. It’s really best to know what group your cultivar is in and what the growing characteristics of that group are! There are some softneck groups that grow well in our Northern climate and some softneck groups that rival even the Rocombole hardnecks for overall best taste. Likewise some hardneck groups will do better in warmer conditions than others. There is also further variation within a group by variety, for example if you live in Oregon and want to grow something in the Rocombole group you may find Spanish Roja won’t size up for you but other cultivars within the group will!

I plant 'grocery store' variety. 😂 I just buy several of the largest heads I can find - organic is nice, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I get great germination (about 98%) and it's always fun to see what I get at harvest time. I'm in the south too (SC Lowcountry) and I had some hard neck in my harvest this year! They did great - produced scapes and all - despite not being vernalized. I'd be hard pressed to pay $7 per pound plus shipping when I can purchase a whole mess of bulbs to plant for about half that price.

I planted garlic on Sunday and by Wednesday it was 3 inches high. Straight from the fridge to the dirt. Red Inchelium from last year. Onions are banging hard also. Potatos and brassica kicking butt. I love fall/winter growing.

I live in Connecticut and planted my garlic several weeks ago (usually plant in mid late October) it is starting to sprouts so I will be heavily mulching it with straw in the next week or so. it has been unusually warm fall and very dry so I've put off so that I can easily water. I planted 10 varieties this year a 1/4 pound of each one. seven are from saved heads that I've previously planted. All are hard neck as I've never had any luck with soft neck . Garlic gets harvested here in late June/early July. Hopefully what i harvested this year will last me until then. Now that my garden is done i will process my garlic. I peel and chop in the food processor and then measure out on parchment paper in tablespoon portions and then freeze. once frozen I place the portions in ziplock bags (double bag so freezer does smell like garlic). Just remove as needed and throw right on whatever I'm cooking doesn't need to thawed and is ready to be used. One of my favorite crops!

Hi Travis, I’m growing garlic for the first time this year. How often should I water and feed the garlic? What do you feed it?
@LazyDogFarm2 ай бұрын
I'll give mine Coop Gro or Agrothrive (something relatively balanced) in the beginning, then just N (I use 13-0-0) once they get growing good.

Can I plant in December after the first first? I’m late ordering in Louisiana zone 9a Edit: How long until harvest once planted? 7 mos? Wow.
@LazyDogFarm2 ай бұрын
You could. Your harvest date will probably still be similar to ours. Garlic flowers when the temps start to warm in mid to late spring.

@LazyDogFarm2 ай бұрын
We have a store locally that carries it. The online shipping is tough because it's only sold in big bags.

Do you have squirrel in the garden digging holes everywhere? If yes, how do you deal with it? If no, I envy you. My squirrel neighbors is driving me crazy.
@WinsomeWinslet2 ай бұрын
We have the same problem. You can sprinkle cayenne pepper around the areas where they are digging. They hate it and will leave those areas alone.

When we had that problem with squirrels eating our apples, we were advised by Fish and Wildlife to depopulate them.
