I did a trial with my long day onions last year. I started 2 trays worth in the 5 inch deep SureRoots 50 cell trays with 1 seed per cell and all but 3 germinated. I then took 2 pots with the same seeds and scattered the seed on top. When i planted the tray ones, i planted as plugs. The ones in pots i separated individually and planted individually. After transplanting, the ones in plugs had far less shock and grew onions much larger the the onions teased apart. Again same seed within 3 ft of each other. So trays only for me!

I used to start my onions very thickly in the container mushrooms come in, then separated them at planting. This year I tried sowing 4-6 seeds per cell in a 6 pack tray instead, then planting that plug/bunch at 1sf spacing, and I got the biggest onions I've ever grown (which are still not as large as yours). I don't know how much of that is soil rehabilitation, and how much is the plug method, but it was so much easier that I'll keep doing that as long as it seems like it works.

The first year I started seeds I had great luck. This year I am struggling. Now I know it is because I am using old seeds. I do use a lot of them, but some nothing came up and some very few. I will try again with a new pack and see if I have better luck.

@LazyDogFarm You should try Rose de Roscoff onions. Its a rare variety, could only find one US vendor, but its a great pink/red onion that grows large but tastes just like a shallot. Very good variety.

I have had bad experiences with non-viable seeds. My strutting mix is peat vermiculite and perlite and top with perlite. When not the first seed germinates it’s a sign it’s not you but the seed.

The very last thing you said is the only thing I don't like about planting onions-- the seed viability. I don't have a place to plant out a whole packet of seeds, so I end up tossing most of the packet. I did try one year to plant seeds from the year before, but they didn't come up, so I don't waste my time doing that any more. I hate to waste things!

We are further up north in Va, we generally grow in spring but I've never had luck with seeds. I can grow them, transplant and they just disappear. I don't know what eats them, one day they are there the next gone. We generally have better luck with set's not as many vanish overnight but they still do. Great video and thank you

That happened to me a couple of years ago over the course of several days at Easter, looked like they were pulled down from underneath, just a small hole left there where the green stalks had been sticking out. Still don't know what got them. I don't plant onions in the flowerbed any more!

I'm iffy on this still, but not because of the time, space or effort needed to grow them from seed, rather the fact that I'm not a market grower at all, rather just the person working at growing as much food for my household's use as possible, so as we don't really eat many large onions/year (5lbs if even that much) & we've already got Egyptian Walking Onions for a few years, with potato onions set to come in under 2 months, if I do get some seeds & plants growing, it'll mostly be to cross with the potato onions, then maybe set aside & plant another 100 seeds/year for the onions we'd use to eat & let go to seed for each successive year. That's why I'm looking for stable midday varieties of seeds if I get any at all.

Jeff from East Tennessee. Yes, I have short day onions growing in trays. I planted them early on July 26 to grow big plants. Some of them have little onion bulbs which has me worried. The plants look good and are growing after two trimmings. Does anybody know if these little bulbs will cause a problem?? Thanks.
@davidward1259
@davidward1259 2 күн бұрын
They grew bulbs because you planted them in the middle of summer. Short day onions start to bulb when a certain number of daylight hours per day are reached. July is pretty close to the longest days of summer, so the plants got the cue to start forming bulbs even though the plants were small. That's why we plant in either late fall or early parts of the new year when the days are short enough the plants put their energy into making green plants, not bulbs. I don't know if they will work out over winter if they have already started making little bulbs. I just know why it happened.

@@davidward1259 You are correct on the hours of daylight is what prompts different varieties of onions, to start bulbing. As to the over wintering, We live in the North. I do know that onions are biennial. They grow an onion the first year, then go dormant. After dormancy they continue to grow, and look like an onion, but very quickly go to seed because they think they are in their 2nd season. How that would work in the South, no idea. It seems you have two growing seasons every year. Late Winter into early Summer and early Fall into early Winter. In the North it's one season, Spring to Fall, Period. Nothing grows in the Winter. My question to anyone would be, Has anyone grown Onions by direct sowing seeds? and what did you experience.

I can testify to 2nd year loss of viability. Of those varieties you showed. 2nd year seeds, Georgia boy had best germ rate at 60% Timon 30%, Cianti 10%. I started over with new seeds. But will plant what did germinate? Once germinated they should grow as well as 2024 seeds?
