Here's my take on your dream. Stella personifies "Lazy Dog Farm". The way you have always done things has come to an end as embodied by a black chicken. A new way symbolized by a spectacular, never before seen, neon green chicken has now appeared. This new way is being integrated into the farm and is shown by being swallowed by the Lazy Dog. It's a very positive dream!

The Neon Chicken... either a rock band or a trendy restaurant. You could develop a cover crop specifically designed for chicken grazing/fertilizing and call it Neon Chicken Blend. Develop a whole line of cover crops for interplanting and call your company the Neon Chicken. Make some neon green merc with black chickens. Better buy that domain name, quick. Your ideas about interplanting cover crops with single harvest crops make so much sense.

Not in a millions years would I have guessed that a LDF video would include a story about a neon green chicken being eaten by your dog!! Now that made me laugh. I used to work with someone that interpreted dreams and I told her a few of my strange ones, and her interpretations creeped me out. I decided to quit telling her about my dreams. So back to the gardening stuff - have you ever thought of or tried the 3 sisters planting combo of corn, beans and squash? I know it’s not the right time, but it’s similar to what you are doing with the intercropping cover crop. I think the intercropping is a fascinating technique, it makes a lot of sense and has a lot of benefits. Plots are looking good and can’t wait to see what they look like in a couple of weeks. Fall is definitely here!!

@@LazyDogFarm Yep it definitely takes some planning. You plant the corn first and once it gets 4-6 inches tall, you plant the beans. Then you plant the squash last. Most of the guidance I've seen on planting uses individual mounds where there are four corn seeds, four bean seeds and two squash seeds per mound. There are other patterns when you have large plots like you have. it might be cool to take your smallest plot and carve out say a 20 x 20 area to try it. Would be interesting to see your results.

Gardens look great Trav! I’m not a psychologist but I think dog symbolizes loyalty and I think the color green in dreams symbolize harmony with nature and peace… sooo maybe something that has been a burden or a weight to you symbolized the black chicken, harmony and peacefulness ( green chicken) was restored by a loyal friend/significant person (Stella) ? Two things- if I saw a neon green chicken, I would figure someone out here messed up the fracking!!! Cold weather and the north- put your dang coat on! They can’t deal with our 100+ temps with 90% humidity. I learned the hard way, 60 degrees in the south is more like 40 degrees in the north- humidity! One final thing, I am going to try some cover crop in my raised beds. I blame you for that crazy experiment. LOL

Just watched this on Saturday morning after finishing a cool hour harvesting pre-refrigerated veggies from my no-till beds here in zone 7b. I brought in a couple of dozen tomatoes in from better boy, Kellogg’s breakfast, green zebra and Bella Rosa, all that started bearing in early July and still going strong. These will get planted again next year, for sure! But the thing that intrigued me about your video today is how it paralleled one of my more successful experiments this year! On May 16, I planted 8 rows of serendipity sweet corn, and interplanted along the same rows a pretty thick overseeding of zinnias and cosmos for cut flowers. Then, on May 27, I came back in and planted between the rows a 3 to 1 mix of moon and stars seedless watermelons and Charleston gray pollen-donors. the corn did its thing very well and stocked the freezer for the winter, and the zinnias started pretty soon along with the ears of corn. Then the cosmos came along later in July and have been great as well. But I have truly been amazed at the watermelons...I culled all but a few of the fruits from the Charleston gray to keep bloom frequency high, and harvested our first moon and stars on August 10. Not remarkable at all, until you know I harvested my biggest one yet this morning (oct 30) and have 3 more with browning tendrils that should beat the frost expected next weekend! While this is a pretty distant cousin from the “three sisters” of lore, I am loving that a finicky seedless melon will bear for almost 3 months under a heavy planting of corn and cut flowers! This again is a no till garden that I gave zero fertilizer to, just the annual fall compost spreading...I will certainly repeat this experiment again in 2022, lord willing!

At this time of year I envy you your warm weather. Our fall garden is producing but it won't be for much longer. Don't know why but my peas are not performing this fall. It did have a warm start so took awhile to get going but it has just real!y started to produce. Frost this week, shouldn't be a hard freeze but we are always a few degrees lower than the forecast. Rant over. Come July I will be very happy to be gardening up here in New York.

Pak Choi is the English(UK) name; in the US it is typically called Bok Choy (at least on the west coast). My son makes a couple great meals using it. One is a ginger/garlic soup that has noodles in a veg broth with I don't know what else he puts in it; the other is a thickened garlic sauce that he quickly heats/wilts the greens in a pan until tender.

I know from experience that the Lord gives me very vivid dreams as way to give me a message as what is to come. I think it means that you need to go in a quiet place and ask for knowledge. I would also keep an eye on your chickens because of predators. The Lord will let you know what needs to be done. I will pray for you as well. God Bless you.

Good morning, we all get funny and crazy dreams at time, hope someone can help. Thanks for the tour of the garden. The intercropping of the potatoes and cover crop seems to be working well and especially with the drying corn seem to be well. If the cover crop NPK wise can help the crop you could mow with a side shoot towards the crop and as it sits on the floor as it’s breaking down. Just a thought, but will cover base of potato plants.

I like pelleted seeds with Actinovate Ag it's a great Biological fungicide but most times I water with it. The only thing I can think of that can be swallowed and neon green is antifreeze. Your dream does reminds me of how life is though. You stop one thing from happening and then you turn around and something worse is happening that you can't stop.

For things that are single harvest, cabbage, potatoes, etc. I like to plant my rows close together so the desired vegetable foliage covers the ground- may 18 or so row spacing. But I think this cover crop interplanting is a neat idea.

Alot of thinking about green cover crops and integrating the chickens lately, and this year. Might be a sub-conscience reflection of that. If your dog is anything like my dogs, they have to be reminded every time something changes in the garden to leave S#!# alone!, otherwise it's a toy lol. Interplanting food with cover is a great method, I do it alot. This year I planted peppers into sorgham sudan and just kept the grass mowed down...worked pretty good, even though it got trampled a little when picking and I was gone for a month in July, I didn't have to weed.

I live in Ohio - there is no shame in wearing long sleeves in 55-degree weather! I'll be interested in watching your Brussels sprouts; in the spring, I planted 2 plants of what was labeled broccoli that turned out to be Brussels sprouts and they were not what I'd call a success. The plants grew HUGE - possibly because I didn't realize until late in the game that I did not actually have broccoli. I joked all summer that it looked like Jurassic Park in my garden. My two plants seemed to multiply into three or four and grew to four feet tall with stalks that were probably about three inches in diameter. The sprouts formed, but it was so hot here in mid-October that most of them started opening up and trying to form more plants, which I did not need. I got one mess of sprouts to cook but they weren't very good and I finally pulled up the plants last week. Adventures in gardening!

Brussels sprouts are one of the trickiest cool-season vegetables to grow IMO. We always plant them and just hope for the best.

I'm in zone 7, TN and my peas are done already. I did great with Burpees first thirteen peas. Killed my back digging the sweet potatoes out of the heavy clay, but had great yield. For a year that started out cold and weird, everything ended up well. Using Hoss hairy vetch for cover crop this fall.

Cover crop , peas clover vetch brought in a lot of amazing biology to my soil. A lot of organic matter. The only thing was with the life came the pests. Wow it was a slug city in there. I grew some up into existing crops that where quite tall already and they did fine. Btw I’m pretty small scale

Justin Rhodes does this with the cover crop in with the main crop. I though his garden was just unkept lol, now I realize he was keeping the soil covered very nicely. Definitely looks like a win. That was my initial thoughts before experimenting with this technique. But it doesn't seem to be the case. The plants look nice and healthy and don't seem to be nutrient-deprived at all.

Beautiful garden. I can’t plant a garden like that were I live but we have slugs all year long. They range in size 3-6 inches and we also have banana slugs that grow from around 6-10 inches long and they can destroy your garden. We have used slug killer but it rains here to much

That dream sounds like a medley of a couple of worries you are working through. I think the main worry is obviously predators on your chickens and the second worry is up coming Halloween holiday represented by neon green chicken. Halloween will be over soon so it is a minor worry. Have you actually noticed any predators or signs of them? Sounds like past experience is amplified your worry about the chickens. Beautiful lettuce! And that clover oh my! That is gorgeous to look at it all day. I wish I had an answer or an idea on the neon chicken. But Stella and the black one does sound like a predator issue that you may not know you have right now. I did get that Caliente mustard from a different supplier, but they are just next door so that's good. Should be here any day now. I may need to get some of that Sakata broccoli. I have either broccoli or brussel sprouts that had struggled to survive but are looking better with these much cooler temps. That glass gem corn is starting to look better too. I see now what you meant by the bands on the carrots. I've got some HT envy carrots and some random carrot seeds from our feed store. Can't wait to see those come up. I'm hoping they do well enough to get atleast a good side dish or two. And maybe some to ferment when you do yours next year. I remember the ones you had on RxR. It was funny watching your dad try them. Maybe that neon green has something to do with all that beautiful 🍀. Hopefully it is a good dream. Thanks for sharing your concerns! We have lots of deer in our area -- so many that it is legal to bait them with corn for hunting. But we're surrounded by hundreds of acres of commercial farmland, so they'd have to travel a long way through open spaces to get to our garden.

do you ever have issues planting your collards on every emitter? was going to do the same but at every foot seems it would be tight when they're full grown so i just did every other. i might direct seed in between before they get to big and give it a shot.

Haven't ever had any issues with the 1' spacing. We do pick ours relatively small in the beginning though, when the leaves are a little bigger than the size of your hand.

I think your dream is a concern over the chicken tractor not being predator-proof. I have seen electrified chicken netting used along with a chicken tractor for predator protection. The netting looks like it is pretty easy to move, so you would just adjust it as you move your chicken tractor. I hope this helps! ;)

With our previous chicken tractor, we used the electric netting to help them roam during the day. But we had some serious predator issues when they were free-roaming within the netting -- mainly hawks. I think the current chicken tractor is pretty secure, but I do worry about it a little.

@@LazyDogFarm Oh, okay. I was thinking about something digging under the tractor. The netting certainly would not stop aerial attacks. We have fishing line strung up over our chicken yard to stop that from happening. It's a constant battle with wildlife in this lifestyle, for sure. Keeps your brain a working!

I think you ate a bad burrito. On a serious note. Does fall sweet corn usually turn out smaller? The plant was shorter and the corn is tiny on some. I gave it lots of natural fertilizer and calcium nitrate and 2 applications of nitrogen liquid fertilizer. The variety is illusion white corn. Very tasty but small.

I'll stay away from dream interpretation. No good can come of dragging them into the daylight. That clover patch would make anyone stand proud. I truly think that this new practice of interplanting select field crops with a compatible cover crop will yield healthier soils and diminish water and nutrient usage and save on cultivation labor. I can sure see why you're excited.

Brother Travis is there a cover crop that would take over a lawn good enough to wipe out burweed "stick"weed? that mess hurts bare feel and pets too. Begins to appear this time of year and by the end of winter crowns with a needle like spur that is unbearable. When hot summer heat arrives it peaks then disappears and comes back when fall weather arrives. Last resort herbicide recommendation? TY

We call them "stickers" around here. They appear in the spring and are usually dried and gone come mid-summer. I had a guy spray my lawn for them one time, but have no idea what they used. Haven't been able to find anyone to spray them the last few years, but they are certainly aggravating.

Maybe a pre emergent such as Tenacity. Make sure it doesn't get into your garden beds just your lawn. I double check if you have St Augustine.

If your worried about northerners making fun of you for wearing long sleeves in 50-60 degrees, just ask them if they can stand working outdoors when it gets over 100. Speaking from personal experience as some one who spent most of their life in zone 9b, and marrying someone from near the Canadian border, they have no concept of this. To them a blistering hot summer is in the 80's. They also have no concept of the 3 P's (pets, pipes, and plants) and are amazed when we say that we get no snow and it seldom drops in the 30's. So when I get a snide comment about being cold in 50-60 degrees, I just turn it around on them and make comments about their summer heat tolerance. That usually shuts them down real quick.

Excellent point! Reminds me when I was in college and worked at a golf course. We had an intern from Texas who came to work with us for the summer. Although most of Texas is hotter temperature-wise, he had a hard time with the humidity. Unless you've felt it, it's hard to explain.

Travis, I have root knot nematodes in my garden. I have planted a cover crop of Kodiak brown mustard. Are there any other plants that I can plant that will help control nematodes? I live in East Coast Florida. Sugar sand soil. I use horse manure to build up my soil. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. @Shine Chessher you can go on line and get the benifical nematodes after you try the brown mustard trick. The benificals will eat the unwanted pesty root knot nematodes. I've done both, and have had great results. Blessings.

Hi lazy Dog Fam, i need a recommendation for a cover crop in coastal SC. I have a couples of acres that are all covered with weeds. I am hand picking them best I can. But it seems to a never ending job. I would like to do a series of cover crops to decrease the weed pressure and improve the soil. I do the work by hand without a tiller. So they need to be covercrops that I can work in by hand. Any suggestions? Thank you, Karen

Incorporating several acres of cover crops by hand sounds like quite the daunting task. As far as cool-season cover crops go, Winter Rye and Clover are some of the toughest to terminate, even with a tiller. So in your case, I would stay away from those. You might want to try something like Austrian winter peas or hairy vetch or a mixture of the two.
