Today I overwintered 95 pepper plants.😮 I did 20 last yr and those plants got enormous and produced hundreds of peppers. I highly recommend overwintering them, 100% worth it❤

Dang Travis, that Okree was practically a tree at the base! Made the loppers look like pocket shears! "I can't prove", sounds like a UGA graduate project in the making!

I had covered my raised bed with a 20'x30' heavy (25 pounds) clear tarp supported by a central redwood frame and sprinkler pipe hoops. We were down to 29F for four nights. The peppers are still good, and even a 'Golden Delight' zucchini survived. I try to open up every day to air it out and keep the mildew down, plus let any bees that are still out and about something to do.

I am also in South Georgia, 30 miles slightly north and east of Tifton. I grow in containers and small raised beds. I have Broccoli, Cauliflower, red cabbage, green cabbage, Savoy-cabbage, Rutabagas, Collards, Cabbage Collards and garlic. When that cold came, I spread clear plastic that I got from Lowe’s on a big roll. It took two rolls but I got it covered and lost nothing. My basil is on my back deck and suffered a little damage but I had thrown an old curtain over it and it didn’t have enough cover. All in all, I was so happy to keep it all alive.

So helpful for us who strictly use raised beds and get advice from in-ground gardeners. Thank you for this information, I never knew why you guys would do so well growing stuff in the winter while I struggled.

Growing up in the citrus orchards of Mesa, Arizona, if a hard freeze was coming all the orchards were flood irrigated. Something about the humidity and density of the water helped disperse the cold. Blossoms would get nipped but the roots and main branches were usually saved.

Our first light frost in 8b was November 2 and no plants were harmed. However on November 27 a heavier frost burned my broccoli, basil, and beautiful dahlia plants! I’m still in 8b after the zones were updated!!Miss seeing those handsome boys and girl in the garden with you!!❤❤❤

I wish we had got some of that rain but it all slipped underneath us. I have my beds covered with frost cloth and am hoping the more frost hardy stuff lives through the winter.

Ha 😂thank you for sharing Trav and fam. The info re brussel sprouts actually helped me. Never too old to learn something new. 😊 lemme tell you, you sure is right about the okri. After moving to Houston from Dallas, gardening here amazes me. 😅 So more than one occasion, I thought to myself...self lets try to get the okra to comeback granted they'll produce here up to Christmas day, but Jan they're dead as a doornail 🎉 again thank you for sharing y'all's experiences

I do all raised bed gardening bc I live in the suburbs & I’ve learned covering my beds when expecting a frost is a must. I lost most of my plants to frost a few years ago.

Here in East Tennessee! Got down to 20 degrees! Little burn on broccoli. Most everything looks fine. I guess most damage came on our green lettuce. Most of it is toast!! Red lettuce looks fine. I covered my short day onions with pine straw. It looks fine. It’s December and I still have a big fall garden.

We got down to 30 a couple nights but it didn't burn anything in my raised beds. I have two young Valencia orange trees and it barely touched the tips of the young new leaves. I've been intending to transplant the smallest in a pot but keep forgetting to.

I’m getting ready to start my brassica seeds, it should be the last round of brassicas for the winter/spring since our last frost is march 1st they should be in the ground the last week of January. My mild winters make it hard for me to take a winter break…

Yes sir. Raised beds do drain too quickly. I mostly noticed this during the summer but same issue. I’m really liking your irrigation ideas; tho that’s more challenging (to me) in winter when I have to drain and roll up the hoses. I appreciate your videos🙏🏻

You sound like you have a cold. Take care of yourself. I have raised beds because I have herniated discs in my low back and can't bend well. I have noticed that they dry out quicker and so I use wood chips on the top to help keep the moisture in the beds. I don't have to water in the fall because we get 46 inches of rain per year and most of it falls in the spring and fall here. I sometimes have to water in the winter to prevent frost damage, because if I let the plants and trees get dehydrated the cold will damage them. Summer is when I water the most, like most people.

I would think your sandy native soil would hold less moisture than your raised beds. Didn't you fill those mostly with the really old woodchip humus? Something else I thought of. The raised beds are higher off the ground, so they are probably cooling off faster and getting colder overall than something on the ground that has that heat battery from the sun.
@pilsplease7561
@pilsplease7561 Жыл бұрын
It does hold less, my soil is literally beach sand and it drains so fast you can water it and its gone as fast as it comes out of the hose. My raised beds are far better at staying moist than my native soil.

When is the best time to amend my raised beds? I want to add some of that organic chicken fertilizer to my raised beds, but do I do it now, or wait until a few weeks before the last frost? Zone 8a..still.

I am in Michigan, Zone 5 (regardless of what the USDA says!). Frosts also affect plants differently at different heights. Could this play into the difference between your raised beds and in-ground results?

@LazyDogFarm

Potatoes can take a light frost, but they'll probably be toast if you get a good freeze. If the plants look dead, might want to go ahead and dig them.

I dont think soil moisture as big a factor as thermal mass in your situation. pots dont hold heat as long due to mass, the ground was warmer for longer, in the spring the raised beds will warm up much faster and take off too for same reason in reverse.
@79PoisonBreaker
@79PoisonBreaker Жыл бұрын
In a pot nothing survives my winter no matter how hardy, raised beds need a little extra mulch . If you want to try cheat the zone has to be in ground burried in mulch or wraped up not to be exposed to the wind.

I think we will just disagree. But that’s fine brother. Plants in dry soil or dirt have less of a climate battery than plants in a wet soil or dirt. I didn’t believe it at first but I’ve seen the truth in it. Much love 🙏🏻

@joeyl.rowland4153
@joeyl.rowland4153 Жыл бұрын
@@brycekirby1567 you couldn't follow okra with tomatoes or beans or cabbage or potatoes without dealing with rootknot nematode. Okra grows in spite of it and it's roots will ALWAYS be absolutely covered. You can grow a cover crop of caliente mustard for bio fumigation to control nematode. But just rotating you may end up passing nematode onto another crop that has no immunity to nematode. Okra though is like a carrier.
