This is exactly what is typical of Loess soil. Its grains are very tiny and become a thin layer of opaque crust that prevents water from seeping later. Lots of organic matter on the surface. Helps slow water penetration. We have a whole village in the desert with the same problem, who found this solution to the problem and his whole garden is treated this way. This solved 75% of the irrigation problem. Only 25% of the irrigation is through water from a well, the rest from rainwater in the winter.

My broccoli is smaller than normal also. I assumed maybe the colder than normal days were the cause. Zone 9. Mine seems to do best when it’s cool but not real cold.

Clean and freeze your ginger. It is so much easier to grate frozen and then toss back in the freezer what you did not use.

Now Travis, you know in Georgia we don't measure fertilizer mixed in a dawg's buck in ounces..... It's "glugs" not ounces! I'm like you, I hate to toss out seeds even after a few years. I will try to get them to germinate and use them if I can. I do buy some new to keep in stock rotation, but I just hate to toss seeds as it's wasting money. If they fail to germinate, then that's another thing. As to broccoli, mine is smaller than normal also. I did get a last start on transplanting it, so I figured that was why. Still checking it for progress and will at least get some heads even if they are not huge (Green Magic is variety)

I'm growing around 1000 broccoli plants right now here in the Augusta, Ga. area. I trialed two kinds of sprouting broccoli this fall and I'm planning on ditching the heading broccoli altogether this Spring. I grew two types of sprouting broccoli (as previously mentioned), a purple called Burgundy, and a green sprouting broccoli BC1611, and the yields on both of these plants are insane. The side shoots on Burgundy in particular are surprisingly large. You also get a harvest about a month earlier than you do on traditional heading broccoli. It's a game changer for my business, and I'm really excited to go all in this spring and grow 500 both kinds of sprouting broccoli I mentioned! If you are growing head broccoli in the south grow Castle Dome or Belstar. They perform the best for me, and believe me I have tried them all. For Cauliflower this year I grew a new early purple called Purple Moon, and it was ready a month before the broccoli. For white Cauliflower Song TJS-65 is unmatchable for a southern Farmer. It is a green stem cauliflower and it's taste is comparable for Fioretto. You could make a cool video on Fioretto Cauliflower Trav. Have you ever grown it? It sells itself. In general broccoli makes a lot of money and grows well in the South. Surprised there is not more people farming it. Anyhow, Happy Growing!

My purple sprouting broccoli never sprouted last year. I still have two purple sprouting broccoli left over from last spring that survived our brutal summer here in zone 10a. Maybe it will sprout in 2024??? But to wait a year is more than I can fathom. Anyway my other broccoli and cauliflower are kickin butt!

Beautiful purple broccoli Travis! I'm not feeling jealous of your onions now because mine are looking as good as yours. If nothing happens to mess things up I should get a few big onions in 24. I fluffed the soil around my onions as well because the good Lord sent us some beneficial rain. I think we might be out of the serious drought, barring the rains keep coming.

What's up Travis?! Happy New Year brother. I too am harvesting some broccoli, infact grabbed 2 pretty heads today. Man was the heads hard an beads were tight!! That particular type was Covina F-1 hybrid. It truly is,as advertised, highly resilient. Temps been up, down, frosts... sshizz.. we Even suffered a flood 1 week b4 Christmas. An those Covina broc. Marched on . An "NO" I am not sponsored by them in any way! But i think so far they are looking like a possible go to for me an mine. That said we are growing 6 types of broc. this fall/winter. Aswell as 2 kinds of Chinese broccoli. Kai Lan, an a beautiful purple variety called HonTsaiTai, which has delicious greens. God bless you an your family an your followers. Stand Strong in 24

@Lazy Dog Farm I am curious to know about the type of soil in your garden. If every time it rains, the soil hardens, have you tried covering it with mulch, shavings, or straw to prevent compaction? In our desert, there is a soil called Loess, which is sealed when the raindrops fall on it and every additional drop of water cannot penetrate inside and thus a flood is caused. The solution to this problem is a thick layer of organic material that slowly absorbs the water into it and into the soil without fear of flooding.
@LazyDogFarm11 ай бұрын
The soil doesn't necessarily harden, but a light crust does form on the top when we get heavy rains. Our soil is pretty sandy.

Travis, are you going to have any more of the giant squash seed this year?? What about walking onions or turmeric? Are you going to have more to sale?

Yes, I hope to have more giant butternut seeds. We also should have turmeric plants in early summer and we'll have more onion bulbs late next summer.

I’ve been wondering how much I should fertilize my onions. I side dressed them with a little bit of bone meal yesterday. I still haven’t decided if I want to go organic or not. I’m doing an experiment with Brussels sprouts where I grow some 100% organic and some in a separate bed using synthetic fertilizer and unfortunately my synthetic ones look a fair bit better. Which makes me wonder what I should do lol .

My broccoli is all leaf no heads I’m given up on it just no luck with it. All that’s left for my garden is my garlic beds and the last ginger is coming out, for next spring, I don’t leave it in the beds cause like it to have the pink showing to pickle it to get the best young tenderness and get a pink color in the sugar/rice vinegar brine.
