I miss having intricate dialogue based quests with multiple solutions depending on what kind of dialogue persuasion you invested in.

@Leyvin9 жыл бұрын
Honestly it's why the "Main" Quest is just so forgettable, or rather more aptly why you're never really interested in continuing with it. While sure it does bring quite a few interesting locations, I think the issue in some way is they tried to Mimic Fallout 1 storytelling. Where the Main Scenario isn't strictly the breadcrumb Quest you always have active but that is merely a pointer to the next major plot point. It is down to you to actually piece together from all the Factions not just what is going on but also the 'Whole' Quest... it's not just the Main, but Minutemen, Brotherhood, Commonwealth, etc. these all play a part. I'm close to 75hrs in and I've not completed the Main Scenario yet, because I just get so damn easily distracted. Still I think what would've definitely helped here would've been the first hour or two being "Pre-War" .. where you get to know your Wife (or Husband), actually care about your Child, Codsworth, etc. As if I'd had time to bond with those characters past "Make your Character" > "Set your Stats" > "Run for the Shelter because a Nuke just went off" ... then what happens next would've actually had some emotional impact and I'd almost certainly have been far more driven to find out who, why and where. You know like how you spend time in Vault 101 before your Dad goes AWOL. Don't get me wrong Fallout 3 had a weak as hell storyline, but until you actually meet your ("If that's the way it has to be!") Dad ... you sorta do care about what is going on. Here you sorta don't. I'd say the same is true for most of the Companions as well. Once you Max them they aren't like "Hey there's this side mission thing I need your help with." outside of frankly the Character that irritated the fuck out of me.

+What the fuck are you doing reading my username? I think that would have been a tremendous mistake. personally I think the BEST thing about this new fallout and how quickly it gets up and running. With nothing to shoot, nothing to loot and no real connection to what would ultimately be the rest of the game, what could a long, languid introductory scene really do for the game or for the players? Satisfy your curiosity? That's not really a strong way to start a game. It would hurt the game the same way the languid, extended origin of Luke Skywalker scenes hurt the special edition star wars movies.

+What the fuck are you doing reading my username? well since they were trying to do a timeskip anyways, why not have the parents comemorate the birth of their child with planting a tree in the garden, which would have grown into a big tree by the time you get back home, you know, little touches ^^

***** It really depends on how creative a person is, honestly. You hand one person a blank character sheet and say "create a character" and they will come back in 20 minutes with a whole backstory and lore book about their character. You hand it to someone else and they come back in five minutes with, "uhh... this is my character Duke Skyfighter... uh... he's a knight. And... uh...that's about it I guess...." This is why you will find a bunch of people who just played Fallout as the default guy and loved the story more than any other Fallout game.
@JCA10099 жыл бұрын
+JazGalaxy No problem with not being a creative person. Most people have low creativity (consequence of a lot of things that I should not discuss here). The problem is to force a creative person not to be it. I think that's what you're trying to say. But I think Bethesda chose to make a Fallout even more popular than it is. But this is happening since Fallout 3... not today. Anyway, I enjoy all #Fallout games... (except BoS and Tactics). And I played #Fallout1 since it was launched, so I'm an old school player... ;)

Like, for the first few weeks I played, I was having an awesome time exploring and building settlements and whatnot. Fallout 4 should have taken all the great features of Fallout 3 and NV and built upon them. However, in many vital cases we've gone backwards or made no real progress. The settlement system is a largely superfluous addition that seems to have come at the cost of taking a lot of resources from important aspects of both a Fallout game, a Bethesda game and even a RPG in general. I love the improvements made to combat and my favourite change is to power armour, I love how tough it makes you feel, like you're a walking tank which is well balanced by requiring fusion cores. However, this game has next to no RPG elements in comparison to even Fallout 3, let alone 1, 2 or New Vegas. Just to give a sense of the kind of freedom that we should expect from a Bethesda game, I'll give this example: in New Vegas at the beginning you're shot in the head and left for dead by a guy called Benny. When you catch up with Benny later on, if you're a female and if you have the right perks, you can actually sleep with him! Obviously that is a completely insane thing to sleep with the guy that tried to kill you but the game gives you the freedom to choose! It would be a really weird thing to start stripping off at a meeting at work but you could do it, you'd be fired and maybe arrested but you are able to do that. In Fallout 4, you have extremely little choice, especially choices that have a real effect on the world.

I haven't played this one myself yet but from the reviews it seems a great game and should therefore have a score of 8 or higher and not the low 5.3 where it is now. Metacritic should investigate this before they lose all their credibility. Edit: in the meantime I have played it, and I love it. It has some issues, but those are minor in comparison to the overall experience. I would rate it 9 out of 10.

+Phil Hill This game is an outlier. the meteoritic backlash is because of how overly hyped this game was. It's like a trendy new greek restaurant opening in the a small farm town. It will have the doors blown off the first night because it's the talk of the community but it will have an immediate backlash because 45% of the community will suddenly remember they don't like greek food. then they'll all the sudden decide they're mad that a greek restaurant doesn't serve fried chicken. Fallout3 was a great game, but a niche one. Even Skyrim was overvalued. I think we will not likely see another Bethesda game reach the same heights that these two have. I think it will settle at a much lower number. Still high, but not 20 million high, like Skyrim sold (which this game is predicted to outsell).

If you are going to look at a review, you should check out reviews from actual critics, or credible KZbinrs. Typically, user reviews are opinions. Also, I just checked user ratings on other sites, and almost all of them are rated 4.5 stars on places like Steam, Amazon, and GameStop. For some reason, ever since this game was announced, people have been giving it hate after hate after hate.
@mirta0009 жыл бұрын
+Phil Hill it runs crazily bad. Shadows are left to be rendered and drawn by a single CPU core (no matter how many cores you have), but the lighting system got improved, meaning that there's more shadows to draw. You can have a very good computer, but have the game running sub 20 FPS or be unplayable. And textures in most places are also kind of inexcusable. I mean I know that mods will fix it, but I expected better from Bethesda, especially when in some areas you can even see texture breaks. There are game breaking bugs (for example friendlies showing up as unkillable enemies, preventing you from progressing the story and having to reset), there's no more autosave anymore and the game crashes often. I can fully understand bad reviews. The game can be great narrative wise, but it runs badly, has game breaking bugs and can crash a lot.

The biggest let down for me about Fallout 4 is the lack of dialogue and no karma system. I only played Fallout 3 in the Fallout franchise but I loved it so much because you can literally blow up a town and feel like a villain or you can kill the villain and save the town.
@amshermansen9 жыл бұрын
+yacine isthemastah It may not have been very good, but it was definitely much preferred to not having ANY kind of system as far as I'm concerned.

+Blue Panda Uchiha I suggest you should play New Vegas with all DLC too. They have an option for you to Nuke one faction army settlement (from the ending of "Lonesome Road") and you can also side with a villain-like factions such as The Legion or Powder Ganger. Or you can even betray them all and become a big new villain yourself (if your Karma is low enough)

Legendary mobs are such an annoyance. Not only will these gladly appear completely at random during storyline missions, effing up the challenge in hilarious ways, the RNG of their dropped items is just so bad. You can find items that can compete with even endgame drops or crafts at random right off the bat...or spend hours trying to grind them to get something and not getting jack.
@NihilNick9 жыл бұрын
Wow it's almost as if they're there to be random. They could drop no loot as well. Why would you be grinding RANDOM enemies for specific items? Are we WoW now boys?!
@amshermansen9 жыл бұрын
NickGaming It's definitely a concept pulled right from "loot" games like Diablo or a lot of MMO's in the WoW vein, yes. I don't dislike the idea as such, but the fact that they appear randomly does irk me somewhat. I've had some really annoying encounters because of it. Like that one time the game decided to spawn in a raider in power armor...with a fatman and far too many shots for it... WHILE I was trying to escort someone through an already raider infested area.

This game was the most disappointing release I can remember. My thesis (one shared by many) is that the changes they implemented to innovate the series actually dismantled the foundation of this series. The dialogue system essentially decimated the role-playing elements that made previous Fallout entries so great. Conversations only have three sets of responses generally and are boring; side quests are *EXTREMELY* limited in scope, variety, and number (I can only recall three quests that were above average, one that rewarded a unique item, and overall about a dozen side quests); there are no unmarked quests that were so interesting in previous games (e.g. Republic of Dave)... And while the base building can be a nice distraction, it's nothing new (mods have been doing this for a long time) and it probably ate up a ton of resources that weren't used for creating new environments or quests (similar to how the new voice acting stunted the creativity of the writing). Even the most marked and welcomed improvement in combat seems to have held the game back. The variety of weapons and armors, when compared to previous entries, is just embarrassing. There are virtually *NO UNIQUE SETS OF ARMOR OR WEAPONS!* Instead, they thought it'd be cool to have miniboss enemies that dropped the same exact item with slightly different boosts. A joy of Fallout is discovering unique, badass items through exploration and choices the player makes, not getting slight stat boosts by killing randomly generated enemies. If I wanted to make slight statistical improvements after hours of grinding I'd play Destiny. Also the perk/stat tree........... Abysmal. Enough said. They tried to make Fallout a more action-centric, cinematic experience when it is abundantly clear previous games thrived when they were more like Dungeons & Dragons: where the player has the agency to explore and make choices in a variety of environments that one isn't necessarily compelled to go to.

I don't think LGR would disagree with you on a lot of these points; it seems like he sidestepped some of the things you pointed out and mostly focused on game mechanics and technical elements as opposed to the writing and RPG elements in great detail. I find it odd he could be such a big fan of FO1 and FO4 simultaneously, although my theory is twofold in that regard- firstly, that he seems to take each individual game based on its own merits (largely irrelevant to its predecessors and follow-ups) and secondly that his form of games journalism is laced with an underlying positivity and appreciation that oftentimes foregoes harsh criticism, however constructive it may be.
@KedViper8 жыл бұрын
Christian E-O I think you're utterly insane. Do you like to dissect girls when you're not criticizing games? But yeah, I totally agree, except I don't think they were really trying hard to innovate. It just seems like classic catering to mainstream appeal while damning the core fan base which seems like what Bethesda has gradually been doing since Oblivion. They focus more and more on the action and less and less on the role-playing. The quests seem uninspired and even mmo-like (go here, kill x amount of enemies, retrieve y amount of things) which means they take less work to create because they're so samey and they can pad out the game time with little effort. The base-building (as someone else pointed out) seems to just be jumping on the _whatever's popular at the moment_ bandwagon that so many AAA companies do which at this time (or when the game came out at least) is the survival-crafting-building craze started by Minecraft years ago. I think that, in fact, takes away from one of the core aspects of what makes Bethesda games good which is the exploration as you're spending less time experiencing all there is to see in the world. A distraction as you called it. Then, on top of the lack of conversation options, which was a big part of the role-playing experience, the character speaks the lines with no option to turn it off as far as I know which takes away from becoming immersed as the character you're role-playing as. The whole time it does this camera direction thing which makes it feel like you're watching an episode of Law & Order (part of the cinematic feeling you described) when you're supposed to be immersed in the a game world. And yeah, the skill tree is a huge disappointment, even worse than going from Oblivion's/Morrowind's class creation to Skyrim's. It just feels like they're removing choices (which could be said about the whole game). I really have to wonder if this is the kind of game Todd Howard himself actually enjoys playing and if it's what he imagined games would be like in the future back when he was playing proper, old-school rpgs like Ultima: Underworld or if he's just trying to make more money at this point and to please investors so he can keep everyone at Bethesda employed.

Even now, after Fallout 4 has been re-released with a lot of the dead Creation Club mods included, the game still has numerous problems that have never been fixed, and many that can't be fixed because they're a result of the game's base design. As with all Bethesda games, it needs to be modded since the devs refuse to fix all the gamebreaking problems and bugs the game has thanks to their laziness. The biggest problem is that the game tells you it's been 200 years, but the entire world looks and feels like it's been a few weeks at most since the bombs fell. Even after a few years, any structure that sits abandoned will be taken over by nature, after a decade it'll be lost in trees and plants, so having massive structures stand completely intact without as much as a crack in the wall after 200 years is not realistic. And despite of how long it's supposedly been, you can still mountains of useful junk all over the place, despite the world supposedly having gangs that scavenge the ruins for anything useful (again, they're mentioned, but you never run into them). The next major problem is that nothing you do really matters. At most your choices affect which NPCs live or die, but the overall state of the world and the main story remains unaffected by any of your actions. And the story is indeed very weak. Towards the end it becomes very clear that Bethesda didn't know how to tie up all the lose ends, and with all the content that was planned and never completed it's obvious that they pretty much gave up on the game along the way.

You've got a very inclusive review here. I played this game a bit with my roommate over the past few months. While I don't necessarily disagree with your points - I've come away feeling like the game was really pretty half-baked in a lot of respects. The dialog system and the whole primary character arc is the primary thing wrong with this game. The reason for this is that they've completely removed your choice to be anything but a certain type of character from the game. In every Fallout prior to 4 your speech choices decided so much; "Up yours and a bullet for breakfast, asshole" *combat begins* - it's all so sterile and inoffensive now. There's no longer an option for being the anti-social "bad guy", they're all just variations of good guy or gruff good guy. But you put it best - it's an open world RPG made by Bethesda before it's a Fallout game.

***** exactly, you make your own story, if you want narrative play a linear game or read a book
@YuriPRIMErpg9 жыл бұрын
22freedom33 Mass Effect had the anticipation, but Fallout, so far, had standards set by the previous games, also with creating proper anticipation. Ever since original Fallout we had some closure to the actual decisions made in game. Something to speak about factions with which we interacted and how we influenced them, picture in general and detail. To say that in this perspective, of all the previous game which COULD deliver on proper ending, this get's a go cause... Mass Effect had 3 games? Is just silly. Even then Mass Effect, with the ending as lame as it was presented ANY difference. It was minuscule, color based, later on patched like fuck (and also sucked) but it had something different to show. Here it's the first Fallout game... to have nothing. In your last comment, to a guy who gave you a rather cynical statement, you've said, and rightfully so, "you make your own story, if you want a narrative play a linear game or read a book", right? Exactly... if you got the ending to a game where you're supposed to make your own story, but the very ending doesn't really give a damn about what you achieved, who you affected and how you played, it kinda subverts that very sense... (something, mind you, previous games managed, despite being all self contained stories... even Tactics had multiple faceted endings, for Christ's sake) This is just shitty ending, sadly, cause the game itself is fun.

I don't like this game. I don't hate it. I don't really feel anything about this game. I noticed a lot of people say "I like the *idea* of (settlements, crafting, legendary mobs, insert other change), but no one says "Wow, I fucking *LOVE* crafting in Fallout 4." I think that's where this game falters for me. Everything is great in concept, except (In my opinion) the new perk system, but nothing feels well-executed. Like, crafting feels nice, but only certain weapons are super-customizable; which is a problem due to the lack of base weapons in the game. Settlements are cool, but the building needs mods to work well. Everything that was added seemed to take away just as much. Better combat? Far less RPG elements in the game. Customizable settlements? Very little pre-built settlements, and the quests from those are replaced with "kill-rinse-repeat" quests. Voiced dialogue? You have less options when talking, and you're forced to feel a certain way. Of course there's things like VATS, which (In my opinion) were pretty mediocre in 3 and 4 that were changed but not improved. VATS is supposed to be a callback to CRPG-style planning, but now becomes free shots on enemies. I feel like Obsidian could write a better Fallout game this next time around, and hopefully fix every precedent that Bethesda set in this *meh* game.

Average gunplay, average voice acting, a piss-poor story, shitty performance on all systems... but a good world. Fucking hell, the game world is Morrowind-level good, in my opinion. And that annoys me, because a world like that deserves a much, much better game. And a game that respects the franchise it supposedly belongs to much more. If this game had been another attempt at making something of RAGE, it would not only fit in WAY better as it is, but it wouldn't have pissed off so many people, and Bethesda could've had themselves two post-apocalyptic franchises to bank off of. But never count on Bethesda to do anything smart, either Bethesda Softworks or Bethesda Game Studios.

Aedan Clarke Amen, brother. The only reason I enjoyed Skyrim more than FO4, was that the floatiness was masked behind the melee combat, which takes the emphasis off of being precise. And the fact that it ran really really well on my PC :P
@aedanclarke9 жыл бұрын
MarchuxProductions My computer, despite being more than capable of running Skyrim at 60+ FPS, refuses to do just that for some reason. Seems to be the way of Bethesda games. Some people have amazing performance, some have abysmal performance that they shouldn't have, and everywhere in between. But yeah, I enjoy Fallout 4 more, both due to Skyrim's combat being very boring for me (and the rest of the combat just not being very good), and because Fallout 4's world is a lot more interesting. Still not a good game, though. That it has 81% positive reviews on Steam is ridiculous. Bethesda has not improved since 2008, and yet people still lap up their bullshit. It's kind of pathetic. And there's people that say quality is subjective. To an extent, that's true, but only to an extent. Fallout 4 is objectively not a great game. The HUGE element of subjectivity comes in surrounding certain mechanics that could perhaps be implemented in a different manner, but when it comes to this game's shooting, for instance, there's no arguing against floaty controls, which is made worse for a lot of people due to an inconsistent framerate. The other part of subjectivity just comes in to enjoyment. You can enjoy shitty games, which is a concept a lot of people have a really, really hard time grasping. Just because someone likes a game doesn't mean its good... but people hate saying that something they like may not be a masterpiece, because that implies that they may have questionable taste... which is strange for me, because I would think that most of these people are adults. When you're an adult, you shouldn't give a shit what people think of your tastes. I like a lot of shitty games purely because they're fun, and I happily admit it. Bah. I like to ramble.

Man, a game I really enjoyed was YOU ARE EMPTY. A mediocre game at best, though generally just a poor game, I like it a LOT. A lot of it is due to the design of the setting, the enemies, etc. I enjoy going through the game, even though it's a mechanically poor game with a walking speed only slightly faster than Dear Esther's, with no ability to sprint. I also enjoyed City Interactive's lower-budget games that were built on the Jupiter engine that powered FEAR. They were short, generally had poor stories, and were very janky, but damn, they were fun for the 120 minutes they lasted. I also play a number of lackluster simulators that aren't very good at being games or sims, but meh. I find them fun. And really, that's all that matters. If someone says they're shit, I had no reason to say otherwise. They are shit, but sometimes the shittiness is precisely what makes something enjoyable. And sometimes, you can enjoy a game for what it does right more than you dislike it for what it does poorly. Bah, basic concepts are complicated now, I guess. Nice to know I'm not alone in my thoughts, though. :P

And I'm interested in covering them, so stay tuned :)

@@LGR have you looked into those games yet?

Safe to stay that LGR lose interest while making the review about it.. No surprise there. I always start over when things getting ridiculous, then stopped playing. repeat.

I love you so much for that heavy rain reference. I don't know how no one else did it. Anyway, needed to happen, so thanks.

They should have divided the into with the male protagonist's view of the military aspect of the US before the great war and the female protagonist's view of the more political/social aspect of the US before the great war.

The best review I've seen for this game by far. You just can't do this game justice in a 4 minute video.

I'm glad some still enjoy Fallout 4 despite its flaws... which if you are willing to endure or ignore (or just 'eh') It is a fun experience and there is plenty to do and explore (and kill)
@DWildWolf5 жыл бұрын
This engine is so good that you can't even see whats outside of a building when inside them, so all windows are blocked with wood to compensate that limitation. All interior places are not where they should be relative to the main map, they are completely separated areas and you need to endure loading screens in all those transitions from inside to outside and vice versa. Basic things like that can't happen anymore. They need a new engine for TES6.

I will never stop being angry at Bethesda for what they did to this series.

Lel u mad
@Anonymouthful4 жыл бұрын
@@malcolmholmes2596 Yes I am mad, mad beyond doubt because something I loved has been twisted into something horrible in the name of profit by people who clearly dont know or care about it. You showing this little concern for that fact is a very clear indicator for how little you care about the series as well.

irllcd13 in denial? More like, having a different opinion. I liked NV better too (hence my profile pic), but it's not OBJECTIVELY better in every way. Fallout 4 has a lot going for it and people have the right to say it's better than NV without fanboys like you merely putting that off as "in denial"
@walterkovacks12668 жыл бұрын
Yes it is.

Well OBJECTIVELY it gives more freedom and choice to the player. There is no debating that. And one of the key parts of Fallout is the player freedom.

This game...... man what can i say about this game. I love it, it's just a stellar experience. A near masterpiece, Bethesda you've earned my respect and gratitude. From interesting narrative, to impressive voice acting, an interesting world one with depth that is fully realised. My only gripe's with this game is the terrible dialogue options, to the so so graphics and poor optimization. Other then that just GG Bethesda, GOTY or at least GOTY contender.

Well LGR changed my mind yet again. Probably won't get this until I buy a gaming PC and by then it will be behind Dragon Age: Origins, The Witcher 2, Morrowind, Oblivion, Starfield, Avowed and Cyberpunk 2077. If technology that allows us to game in our sleep is invented soon then I'll be able to get to it in the next few decades.
