@IanSane
@IanSane 4 жыл бұрын
If it's going to the recycler then isn't it now trash? Any legal issue with just taking it? There is no reason for Dell's policy to cover ALL computers over a certain age since at a certain point you're looking at antiques that do not compete with Dell's products. I wouldn't be surprised if that technically didn't fall under the policy since it's not a "PC" in the sense of being a Wintel IBM compatible computer. Dell doesn't offer a TRS-80 clone. Needless to say if the only response is "it's our policy" then the policy is crap.
@P33b4Ugo5omwh3r3
@P33b4Ugo5omwh3r3 4 жыл бұрын
@@IanSane The thing about outdated things it's considered polluting and provoking all sorts of hazards. Sure we need to learn what comes from where but open one storage space document it and make a book about it. No need to hoard hazardous crap. There are companies who have recycling contracts and if you take home something that is signed for recycling you pay a fine and if the person isn't found who took it all employees get punished. Usually you pay more then what it really is worth.

Throwing away such a significant great computer is a crime against humanity, no matter the contracts or requirements.

This has happened and still happens with a lot of corporations, which is yet another proof of their inability to be in touch with anything other than profit. Imagine that there's car companies out there that destroyed prototypes to famous cars, only to have to pay absurd amounts of money to restore them when the public changed face and they smelled profit on the rise. Just boggles the mind, because preserving things in museums is not a new concept, certainly not for a corporation like Dell. And in this case, it's a less grievous crime, we're talking complete eradication and hateful search to the point where owners feared for their lives, if people found out they owned cars, or items, that were on search and destroy warrants (because lawsuits).

50:53 - Yeah, I hoped the spring was still inside the box. Also, you can super glue stuff from the non-visible side by holding the parts together, put a drop or glue and pour some baking soda on it. Repeat as needed to build up a bridge between the two sides. This way it will have much more surface to stick, not just along the cracked seam. Good luck fixing it! (if instructions unclear, just search for super glue+baking soda videos)

The Casio Cassiopeia did it for me. I ended up getting one when I was a kid and loved it. I also had a card modem for it, and of course the typical hijinks ensued. Showing kids at school this little color PC in my hands just blew their minds. I remember showing one of my classmates a very inappropriate picture during class, and when my teacher told me to hand it over I quickly hit the shortcut button for the calculator. I was doing the same kinds of things children do now on their smartphones, but in the 90s.

Maaaan, seeing that Jedi Knight box brought me back. I have such a clear memory of visiting a Best Buy as a kid with my uncle who was the family computer guy. We were browsing the PC game section(yes that used to exist), I saw the box and, having been a huge fan of Dark Forces, made it known that I wanted that game like right now. It was fall so Christmas was on the horizon. I got the game that year. I played that game probably more than any game in the history of my gaming career (I'm 37). It was legitimately my first introduction to online gaming beyond playing online chess. The Microsoft Gaming Zone hosted it and the expansion, Mysteries of the Sith. Those were amazing the days of early online multiplayer gaming.

@@danaeckel5523 The cost of upgrading them is quite eyewatering too compared to Windows machines, especially when they're already very expensive I bought a 1 TB M.2 SSD for ~£100 for my PC, yet to upgrade to an SSD of the same specification when buying a MacBook Pro it'll set you back £400... Four times the price, but for what exactly?

I have 3 old-ish PC's around the house, I still have the one that my brother bought back in 1998 (I call it the small PC), the machine I bought not long after I went to college in 2006 (I call it the big PC) and there's a PC in the home-made arcade machine I built with a carpenter relative of mine that runs MAME. I don't know why but the big PC and the MAME PC has SoundBlaster LIVE! in them (I don't remember why I changed the big PC's sound or is it replace the on-board chip I don't remember). The small PC has the same Quantum Fireball 3GB HDD inside, still works after it was tortured by a failing PSU for many years. All those graphics card names make me feel old, like the S3 Trio, ATI Rage, Trident... By the way, the small PC has an ABIT BH6 motherboard and an Intel Celeron, Slot 1 CPU (I believe it's a 266, 300A or 333 idunno...). I was a fan of the Slot1 design of the CPU.

Seeing that TRS-80 Model II...wow. That was the second computer my mother owned for her accounting business way back when those were brand new new. No hard disk, though, so she had a locked cabinet full of those 8" floppies! She gave it to me when she moved on to an IBM 8088. I used it as a word processor and to teach myself how to make some really simple BASIC programs that would be laughable now but were really cool to a 10 year old. Watching your excitement got me excited over that machine all over again. So thank you, LGR, for bringing back some good memories. 😄

Yay Creative Sound blaster Live! 5.1 Platinum. I bought mine off from an internet auction back in 2001 came with the original big flat cable, remote and the digital mini DIN cable. I still have it all to this day. I upgraded it with an Audigy 2 Zs Platinum back in 2006 and then to a X-Fi Fatality Platinum in 2009. The Fatality card has been nurfed a bit as it don't allow AUX and Microphone input to run at the same time. I want to get a new sound card soon but i am quite unsure which one to buy next

One suggestion that has always worked for me when fixing plastics, and hides the seam better than superglue? Go to Lowe's and get some Oatey's PVC Pipe Cement, apply it to the inside of the broken plastic, then PUSH the two halves of the plastic together for a bit. It makes a fantastic bond for plastics like ABS (Yes, it's for PVC, but it REALLY does laptop/computer plastics like ABS well too.)
