I love how the game draws in the graphics with each screen. It's probably a technical limitation, but that's really neat.
@LGR9 жыл бұрын
Grey Bryson I love it too! It's a hallmark of games from this era, and I love going back to watch it draw itself.
@BastetFurry9 жыл бұрын
Grey Bryson It's proceduraly generated to save space, most of those backdrops could easily be created with, for example. a single QBasic DRAW command.
@-taz-9 жыл бұрын
Bastet Furry It's just vectors with flood fills. Because with 256kb of RAM there wasn't enough room for an off screen buffer. Also, they halved the horizontal resolution of the zbuffer, the hidden screen which indicates what objects you can walk in front of or behind. That makes the games REALLY low res with double wide pixels. Even though it's pretty clever, there are better ways to do it. It's just that they were in a huge hurry because... well... companies are always in a hurry! They never give us enough time to do anything right.
@slade3079 жыл бұрын
Grey Bryson It reminds me of Graphics Magician which I had for my Apple //e. I don't think there was a PC version. It was a graphics editor designed for graphic adventure games. Instead of saving the individual images, it saved the steps to create the image on screen - taking a fraction of the space a saved image would take. It would draw the image onscreen like what you see in the video. It was a neat program to play with.

One of my best memories is playing KQ as child and then playing the KQ remake years later. I remembered walking onto a screen in the remake which was redrawn from it's oriignal version. The redrawn screen was missing something mundane like a big rock. I remember being SHOCKED by the fact that the rock was gone because, in my imagination, as a kid, that rock was incredibly important. I had tried to solve puzzles using that rock. I had tried to lift that rock. I had tried to roll that rock. I had, in my imagination, given the rock height, width, depth, and significance. The fact that is twas just GONE underscored how much of Daventry existed purely in my imagination. I think THAT'S the thing that modern games miss.
@hanschristiaanhylkema2 жыл бұрын
You've described wonderfully what I totally agree with: Much of the old gaming experience was adding your own meaning and imagination to things. You had to invent a part of the game in your mind and that made certain games become a very personal experience. I too miss that time.

That box looks like an oversized audio cassette case! I guess IBM thought their traditional 3-ring binders would be too "formal" for a game, and a regular cardboard box would be too cheap -- so they invented something new, and then seemingly never used it again!

King's Quest III was one of the very first PC games I ever played as a child, and one that showed me just how intricate gaming could be at the time. You have no idea how much this game means to me. This was THE first game I ever played when I was 4 years old in 1984. My aunt and uncle had a Tandy 1000 in their office and then had King's Quest and Loadrunner for it. My aunt didn't think that my cousin and I could understand how to play KQ, so we had to sneak into the office and play. This game is where I learned that the word 'carrot' had two "r's". We used to play this so much. You had to go to the garden to get the carrot so the goat would follow you and kick the troll off his bridge so you could cross it. Here I am now at the old age of 44 and I am still playing games. Unfortunately my cousin passed away 13 years ago, but we always talked about King's Quest, Space Ace and all the other Sierra games of the time. In honor of my cousin I got a tattoo that says "Waiting To Respawn" written in the 80's computer text, but I want to get another one below it that says ">Pick Carrot". No one will get the meaning and it will make a great story to tell them when they ask. King's Quest will always hold a special spot in my heart and it always reminds me of my cousin, James Paul Peterson.

There is something so special (at least for me) about this blue screen that most people may not notice. The King Edward and inventory "Blue Screen" was pleasant to look at "and" listen to. If you listen closely (it probably only happens if the PCjr is running the game) you hear two special humming sounds. One is for the text materializing on the screen, and the other is for the blue screen display. It starts with the text "writing hum" and then switches to a different hum after it finishes writing the text. Ahhh, so soothing. I also love the river sounds in this game. It may just sound like TV static to some people, but I can tell that the developers meant for it to sound like water currents. Something about that stuff really draws me in.

I like that you mentioned the AGDI remake because it, and the other remakes they did, deserve as much attention as possible. I never knew there was a difference between any of the versions of the game, aside from the remakes and console port. Interesting to say the least. I'm very glad that Sierra didn't go kaput back then as well because they deserved everything that they accomplished... at least up until Mask of Eternity. I also never knew that you could charm the leprechauns with the fiddle; I always used the clover to dispatch them.

Never played this even though I've been a gamer for over 30+ years, though just like you, I can certainly appreciate it for all its nostalgic goodness! Question, were the puzzles of this game logical? nothing spoils a game for me more than illogical puzzles, ie "Put the cat in the oven, then its ashes goes in the soup, which makes the king poop diarrhoea while you quickly take the hidden broom behind the curtain" :)

Neat, I had the version with the box art for the Tandy (with a picture that was a room full of treasure). Which now makes me wonder how that picture was put together - was it at the Williams' house? (you know one of their prior games had a photo from their hot tub! and some stores wouldn't even stock that game :) ). At 6:06 wow, it wasn't a typo in the manual, even in -game it was Grahame - and I compared that text description to the 1987 version, they did change it to Graham. 05:23 isn't that intro tune also used when you enter the castle for the first time? (yes, in the '87 version, when you open the castle doors, it plays that sound). On the Tandy 1000 at 8MHz, I didn't notice the "drawing of the scenes" as much - but that is a neat effect. Would be neat to see a modern game capture that effect, of "painting a scene" but actually make it playable while it is being drawn and painted (i.e. already completed painted objects can move across remaining unpainted background). 10:05 Amen. // Ken is working on a new game here in 2022, be on the lookout!

Growing up, my family couldn't really afford a PC, so I never really got to experience this game as a child. My first gaming console was a Atari 2600 (though the NES was out at the time) I believe it was about 93-94 when we finally got our first PC, which just happened to come with a booklet of CD-Roms. Kings Quest I Enhanced was one of them (that and Space Quest 4, which is another great game) Needless to say, even 10 years after the originals release, it was still a surprisingly fun game to play. Those were great days for gaming. Mind you, gaming is still great in this day and age.. it's just different.

ERROR: @ 1:46 the literature states "Please note that sound cards and mice are not supported, as they DID NOT EXIST." Not true. I had an IBM PCjr with the IBM King's Quest Edition, and we had a MOUSE! It was a Mouse Systems Optical Mouse (with metal grid mouse pad). It came with PC Paint. (didn't work for KQ tho).

Wow, I know this game sold well and it was most likely probably a showcase game ... but how could they not place in game screenshots on the back? With years where we had pre-rendered screens and stuff as actual gameplay footage we had a small window here, specifically, where something like this would have literally been revolutionary. Like I said, I know it sold well but I can't help but feel like it would have sold WAAAYYY more if IBM had abandoned their stock design here for once...

+LanIost Well, as LGR himself says, the IBM PC and PCjr versions were a complete commercial failure, because people played their computer games on C64 and Apple II. The game didn't really succeed until the Tandy 1000 and Apple 2C came out. Not that I'm surprised. Poor box art + computer not really considered a gaming platform = fail. However, this is just another example of how sheer dumb luck can play a role in people's lives. If the Tandy 1000 and Apple 2C hadn't come out until AFTER Sierra closed down, an entire era of graphical adventure games wouldn't have happened at all.
