It was really awesome to hear you mention Jeff van Dyck and Saki Kaskas. These two guys put together explosive soundtracks for numerous games in the mid to late 90s, and more people should know who they are. They created music so amazing that I would sometimes just sit back and listen to playback during menu screens rather than fire up my next hockey game.

Man, this brings back memories. i LOVED this game. I had it on the Panasonic 3DO in my mid-late teens, and i could race my buddies on my 27" Zenith tube TV. This was the game that introduced me to cars i had never heard of back in the 90s. The NSX, Supra and the RX7. The point to point highway racing in traffic was bloody awesome. In the end my favorite car was the NSX and the 911 second. My buddy always made us race two 911's. God, great memories.

I can't believe how much this review mirrors my own experience. I remember buying NFSSE when I was 12 years old at Costco, when we too did not have a PC with a fast enough processor (or a CD-ROM drive). I also remember staring at the back of the box so excited to play it. I begged my dad for a new computer, and behold for my birthday that year, a new computer with a Pentium processor at 133mhz showed up. Still one of my favorite games as a kid.

This takes me back. Not because I played the NFS games, but because it takes me back to that special time when you're a kid and you don't know the limits of a video game, it feels like this magical, open-ended world where everything can happen. Back in grade school, me and my best friends would swap stories about all the cool things we did in video games. Good times.
@OhioGirl-bu2kv2 жыл бұрын
Oh man.....watching this video of these racetracks and cars is bringing SO many memories for me right now. I'm feeling very nostalgic and getting misty eyed. I used to race the Viper on Alpine (I think). I would drive that car so fast down an open stretch of road and purposefully slam the Viper into an oncoming vehicle!! I loved the sound of the metal scraping against the concrete and hearing the glass shatter in the windshield!! Such good times back then!! I played in Knockout mode and the Tournaments to unlock the special tracks!! It was very stressful and I had to play over and over and over again until I finally won!! I would love to be able to play these on a modern computer with the right equipment. I had the first 3 or 4 NFS games, I had Driver and Driver 2, I had all the Crash Bandicoot games and I also had Road Rash and Road Rash 2. All of those games played on the Sony Playstation 1. I forgot what the graphics looked like from these NFS games. I have been so used to seeing these modern games with impeccable graphics and then to see the graphics from NFS was such a shock to the system!!!! Great review on this game. Wish I could play it again!!!

Holy fucking shit... I had that exact same Acer Aspire pc back when I was a kid. April 1997 to be exact. I recognize that familiar "shitload of dots on the sidepanel" design and the odd on/off switch that you had to push in. That was my childhood PC. I still has the keyboard that I use occasionally on the Windows 98 PC here on the shelf. It ran DOS games like a gem, and the mods for games like Grand Theft Auto, and games like POD, and Age of Empires, and the Build Engine games... totally made me feel like I was in paradise even though my middle school life was an absolute fucking nightmare. Even though that thing only had a 56K modem and a 3GB hard drive, I remember using that thing constantly just in awe at this thing called the "internet"... and things like Netscape Navigator, and the AOL Instant Messenger, and this PC overall helped prepare me for.... uh... typing in long winded comments in a KZbin video many years later. It was a glorious moment of nostalgia and I still miss that particular PC 15 years later. You keep talking about nostalgic childhood things that I like, LGR, and I like it.... and Empire City for NFS3 was fucking amazing, the mood, the style :D

For me, it's weird and awesome at the same the fact that my experience with this game almost equals yours, Clint. As was the case with Phantasmagoria, a game in which I spent so much time just looking at those 7 (SEVEN!!) cds, reading the manual, taking care of the box and imagining how cool it would be to play it at night, I bought NFSSE before upgrading my computer with a multimedia kit back in 1996. It was worth the wait for the two games because they ultimately have a special place in my heart. It's very interesting to notice that some people, living in different parts of the world, happen to share similar emotional memories of a particular thing. The Need for Speed Special Edition still is my favorite racing game. I gotta try to run it in Windows 10 now. I also have NFS2SE, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the original. I'm looking forward the next video you've just announced. Thank you very much for this great trip down memory lane, Clint! Take care.

EA is EA so we will never see the fun Need for Speed games back anymore, now it all has to be super shiny and way to serious, yet having stupid stories cause the people in suits hear that RPGs with stories sell well so hell they want a story in their racer cause if race fans like one thing it's a story about some wanna be street racer and all the super models and gansta rappers he meets on his road to become the best driver ever...yeah...way more fun then playing tag in splitscreen race mode (yeah me and my friends did that, playing tags with cars).

Dude this totally takes me back, thank you. I think I still have my disc somewhere. I bought several more need for speed games after this one and I was able to drive real cars in 98.

I have the need! The need for Lazy Game Reviews!

I was born in 1995, practically the year the Need For Speed franchise emerged. The first title I tried was NFS III Hot Pursuit, and since my PC when I was young had limited resources (it had a hard time running NFS Most Wanted) I squeezed everything I could out of the first versions of the franchise. This happened around 2008-2010. Then, years later, when I was almost old enough to drive, I started trying those games again but with a manual gearbox (I must say that the experience is very different), and a couple of years ago I got into motorsports (more specifically rally racing) and I have tried to implement what I have learned there in those games, with mixed results, although what I have learned in TNFS SE and NFS Porsche has been more effective (ignoring other simulators from other franchises such as Gran Turismo).

Seconding. The NFSSE OST linked to in the description doesn't seem to have it.

Cool, keep 'em coming! It's nice to revisit reviews and re-review games. Can't wait for your Need for Speed 3 re-review, that's my old favorite of the series.

To this day, every NFS fan has screamed for segmented tracks to be put back in the game, something that EA has refused to listen to and implement.

Maybe I'm just less of a raw power guy, but my 90s dream car is the NSX. I don't even care if it's "only" a V6, that car is beautiful and amazing.

I wish I had known about the extra car and levels when I was younger! My dumb dog thought the CD was a tasty snack and I haven't been able to properly play it since. (For those of you wondering, yes my dog is okay, and he wasn't in any pain.)

I couldn't identify more with everything said here. Ahh, the memories, the nostalgia, the ridiculous crashes! Great review/tribute to a classic. Cheers LGR!

Dude I know you probably won't see this, and even if you do, I know you probably didn't play this game but... Viper racing! Please please do a review on it😩 lmao that game was my while childhood, honestly probably on the same level as NFS and GTA games at that time. Viper racing was my whole childhood lol and I think you'd love it too sense you're a big viper fan too haha

One of my favourite PC games as a kid. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Loved that game, i remember it also had poor physics. On the forest track with the bridge i ran into a car before proceeding over the bridge, i looked in the rear view mirror and i saw the car i ran into doing a pirouette on its front. Crashed a few seconds later because i was laughing so hard :o)
@MaartenvanHeek7 жыл бұрын
Ichinin it actually had rather decent physics. Not the crashes, but in handling. As lgr describes it: 4wd Lamborghini, tail happy 911, and the very agile Supra Turbo :)

I had NFSSE and I would race for a bit, and inevitably get bored and do the same thing, pit maneuvering cars and slamming into them head on to see how many flips I could make my car do. Anytime I played racing games, (especially old 3d rally car racers for DOS) it always eventually devolved into finding that one spot on the track you could catch big air and trying to hit another car mid air. I love the nostalgia I feel watching these reviews.

Only YOU can make a re-review feel so entertaining bud, loved it Clint, like everyone else's comments before me.. your skills (writing, editing, etc) are just honed to youtube perfection.... keep up the great work man, I've been a sub since your first sip of tab? oh man, I hope I didn't get that detail wrong, I know you mentioned what drink it was, my gold fish memory fails me again :)

ah, EA back then used to bring out excellent titles every single time. now when i hear about EA i cringe. things sure changed in the past 20 years huh oh and by the way Clint, you should totally make vids about the first three grand theft auto games (Grand Theft Auto, GTA London and gta2) people today tend to forget where grand theft auto really started off from... (including R* games sadly) and besides, it would be nice to hear your thoughts about how you've seen the franchise in its earliest days. i know i spent more hours playing the first grand theft auto than the hours i spent playing GTA4 and GTA5 combined (a number which is probably at around 1200 hours total, which then again is nearly nothing compared to my entire playtime on San Andreas which is probably easily over 10,000 hours - i was so addicted to that game it was basically the only thing i've played every day for a period of nearly two years lol)

I have great memories on Need for Speed 2. I used to play it with younger sister back in the day. Now you can play it with 3D acceleration and TCP/IP multiplayer on Linux thanks to this: github.com/zaps166/NFSIISE So many memories...

This game can run on ARM devices, also on Android. Only 32-bit little-endian CPUs are supported. So in theory, yes. Haven't tried it yet, since I don't have another RasPi to test it on

i still agree with most game reviewers out there that said the first need for speed appeara t be more realistic than to the second need for speed when the second installment released, but sure as hell that by the time you reviewed again this good old game, it is just a tear of my eyes for the great nostalgia, really love it man, keep it up
