The Need For Speed never received a licensed expansion pack. Unlicensed though? Well, there was at least one: We All Need Extra Speed, released by UK Gold in 1997 as a European exclusive. With 500+ custom tracks!

you wake up and find a mysterious CDrom full of new LGR videos the resolution is low but the voice does appear to be Clint's the subject matter becomes increasingly more bizarre as you go down the file list, first reviewing semi-fictional parody games like Clapping Party (video runtime 46 minutes despite the game only having about 4 seconds of content), then moving on toward seemingly impossible and unlikely games with titles like Get Away From Your Own Arm and Are You Afraid of Numbers? Finally the last one on the list is a Lazy Game Review of Polybius 4: The Polybiest

I had a couple of map compilations for Doom and Duke3D that were sort of similar. Just a big old pile of random maps collected from BBSes and only vaguely thrown into folders on a CD. The earlier times when you could find unofficial addons, expansions, sequels, what have you, and the companies (for the most part) don't quickly come after the sellers. Now we live in a time where they cease things left and right. So sad.
@KasumiRINA
@KasumiRINA 4 жыл бұрын
It is sad, considering that the best and most ambitious projects were shut down. Streets of Rage Remake is very likely the best 2D beatemup of all time. SEGA called... First KOTOR is one of the best RPGs ever, but the engine 8s broken and doesn't run well on modern systems or in HD (text becomes unreadable, FMVs need exotic codes etc.), remake looked very promising but EA... Worst thing is that companies don't use those licenses themselves. Just sit on them.

Except that modding is built into platforms like steam providing devs and hobbyists the opportunityto make content within the limits of copyright. I do however miss this bootleg era too though!! Absolutely! When I see low-fi graphics, things like digitized sprites or prerendered stuff, it subconsciously brings up feelings we had when seeing similar style originally. It's the same process people have towards food that's similar to grandma's or their local traditions and art, even though they are not the pieces you seen as a kid, it feels like it. That's what nostalgia is. Things that you associate with the warm parts of your childhood or youth.

As a Brit I remember these and UKGold, it's because the average person didn't really have the means to exploit BBS systems back in the day for all of their delicious innards, so we had to rely on coverdiscs and packs like these-of which there were many-to get our modding jollies. Honestly, it was a service being offered to those who otherwise wouldn't have been able to get into mods at the time. Coverdiscs were a real boon especially so, you never knew what you'd find on one. They were delightful and I'm sad that America missed out on that particular joy. Like I said though, you gents had BBSes. I'd like to see more of this. It's fascinating watching someone who'd never experienced any of htis back in the day expericing it now. UKGold was a fairly common name back in the '80s and the '90s, having published numerous home computer games for the usual suspects from Sinclair Computers, Amstrad, Atari, and Commodore.

Always wanted to own the 3DO because of this game. Finished up playing on the PS1, a decent version as it turns out. Split screen and decent handling. Probably the first time I felt 'weight' in a car, almost a sim in its day. Great memories.

I saw UK Gold and thought it would be a subsidiary of U.S. Gold (1984-1996). The well known British video game publisher.

The most I've done as far as editing was with NFS SE and swapping the car files with the super fast futuristic hybrid or whatever that purple and gray car was. Even playing the original NFS on an emulator was a freaking blast trying to win ALL the tracks.

What's funny is I just watched the original Need for Speed review video last night and now I'm seeing this today. Very odd but very cool! Editing tracks in NFS3 is a bit easier and slightly more predictable though. But love it all just the same!

Fun fact: UK Gold also used to be the name of a TV channel here, they showed reruns of all the old sitcoms from the 70s and 80s. I think they're called UKTV Gold now. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong

It's officially now just called "Gold", but it is part of the UKTV company - ie. the commercial BBC channels that they aren't allowed to use BBC branding in the UK.
