One thing I loved about Civ, that I only discovered after we had it for years, was that ALL text in the game existed in .txt files that were amazingly easy to edit! I remember being 12, and my dad loved the game, so I stayed up all night, and edited all the text, from the intro movie (I think it partially exists because the world is being generated while it plays), through to everything else. He totally freaked out when the opening movie started it's first two normal lines, only to go "Wait, wait... again? Larry, seriously? How many times are you going to start a new game? Should I even give you choices, or just assume you'll play Shaka Zulu again?" He had no idea what was going on LOL.

That long intro had a point... on computers of the day, it actually took almost all that time to generate the map!
@modiFive5 жыл бұрын
Not on Amiga. This intro is the first thing you see after starting the diskette with this game, and it's unskippable, not like on DoS, where you see it after setting a map, and you can skip it as soon as the map is generated. So if you want to play it on Amiga, you have additional around 10 minutes to make yourself something to eat and drink.
@craigh52364 жыл бұрын
@@modiFive You are remembering it wrong. On the Amiga it was, start game, select map settings (large, arid,etc) then you got the intro (map generation) then you get to pick difficulty, number of civs, etc. I played civ 1 first one an amiga 500, eventually ended up with a much faster 1200 and that intro speed was much shorter on the 1200 which I had upgraded.

I frequent CivFanatics, generally regarded as THE place to go for Civilization fans. I must say that Civ IV was the last decent title in the series, everything else after that has been lackluster. From time to time I play Civ IV with normal settings, but on a hard difficulty (Immortal/Diety). There is a guy here on KZbin I watch who plays Diety on a regular basis. The standard settings, normal map with six other civilizations to compete against, nothing special. Truly what keeps me coming back is the challenge to the game, you actually have to have a bit of skill to play on Diety. I learn more from those who play on high difficulties compared to those who play on low difficulties. Doesn't matter to me how big the map is, usually a 14,000 tile map suits me just fine. Unfortunately Civ IV was slow to play at the time it was released, and today's high end computers still have a tough time keeping it smooth in the late game. Especially if you were on a Huge map with 17 other Civs, moving around hundreds of military units while micromanaging all your cities and workers. What you're asking for is more along the lines of Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall. That was TOO BIG.

The Duke Nukem franchise was one of my most favorite games. So was Civilization, and Sim Earth, Sim City, etc. Other franchises were Doom and Silent Hill. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Time Killers. I never played 'Way of the Warrior' on 3DO, but I imagined I would love it.

I was watching some of your videos and countless times I have enjoyed and loved your reviews. I have even told you about how amazing you are in other places (such as Tongue of the Fatman and Neverhood, I think). I was wondering since we are both musicians, It would be amazing to hear what you think are the top 17 best game soundtracks of all time. It would also give you nostalgia and happiness that all of us can experience. If you don't, that's fine: But thank you for doing these reviews! JBR

Love that you opened with that music... They don't make games like they used to.

I love the simplicity of CiVs 1 and 2 over their later iterations. The new CIVs are way too complex for me to enjoy.

Remember playing this. One of the most epic games every made. It also set the pace and direction for other simulation games. Incredible!

This is one of my top favorite episode of LGR. Civilization is one of my favorite game series I've ever played & this episode really tells how fun this game can be. Every time I watch this episode I'll get happy & cheerful. Also it makes me want to put this game on & start playing it. Good job! You really can make awsome game even awsomer. YEAH! :D

Played this game a lot on the Amiga 500. It had better sounds and graphics than the PC's, one could afford. Brought back good memories of my brother and I figuring out how to win the game. Thanks for sharing.

Used to play those old games a lot in the past because the PC we had at home back then was terrible at running normal games. But over time I ended up enjoying those old games from 80s and 90s. So yeah good nostalgia for me👍👍👍

Bit of trivia about the music and text during the "world building" phase. That was put in place to give the player something to watch and listen to as our 8086-80386 was crunching numbers and actually making the world. It was realized it would take several minutes to make a world, so they put that in to keep us entertained and not think it had locked up.

To the favorites!I know it's been reviewed a thousand times before,but I always appreciate the LGR treatment. Story:The Amiga version took over 10 minutes to create a new world,my dad would blast the stereo in the basement so he could do other things and know the game was ready when the music stopped.Epic intro music on the Amiga. MicroProse knew how to program the Amiga,usually making it the best version.Even in the VGA era,Amiga users would not be jealous with a MicroProse game.
