Yes, Simcity is a fun game that teached a lot of kids the very very very basic of City planning (it's like one single university lecture amount), but if you take the percentage of kids that actually used that knowledge to become city planners, it's probably the most ineffective leaning method that ever existed. So maybe think twice about calling textbooks garbage as one of these might be the reason you survive a disease at one point.

Hard to believe I played this on a submarine in 1992. I used a nice PC in the torpedo room using a pirated (shit-maybe I bought it then) game that everyone loved. We also played some King's Quest down submerged.

I had SIM City Classic and 688 at home, but when I deployed I carried a copy of Harpoon on 3.5" Floppy and used a PC in the Ships Library to play on. This was 91-93 time frame on the USS Eisenhower.

The first SimCity I remember playing was on NES or SNES. My wife rented it for me early 1990s. Maxis was founded the same year I met the girl who became my wife. My soulmate. She got me SimCity 2000 at Walmart around 1996. She passed away Jan 3 a few weeks back. I cant live without her yet here I am. I love you Little One. And Interplay ruled!!

At the same time Sim City showed me how complex and fragile a city can be and how symbiotic it is, it also helped to improve my way of thinking about everything. Not only cities I started to be more analytic, looking at stuff trying to think the back-end of things. What was behind something in order to get to where it was. Not only Sim City, of course, but it definitely had it part on that

Holy *crap*, you just reminded me of the Interplay FMV version! It came in the Interplay All-Nighter Anthology, a big multi-disc collection with Sim City FMV, Cyberia, Blackthorne, Frankenstein, Castles, *all four* Battle Chesses, and a Descent II demo! I was six years old, and those discs were the only things I played for like a YEAR. Crazy the memories you just brought rushing back..

I was first introduced to SimCity (2000 version) in a tech class. My friends and I would play the hell out of that game. We loved it so much we ran to the store and purchased our own copies. Some years later, Streets of SimCity came along and I bought that as well. I loved being able to drive through my own creations. It wasn't too shabby but it did have its faults. Oddly enough, when looking for a review of it, I stumbled upon Clint's video in 2010 and I've been watching him ever since. And for that, I am grateful.

I have such an emotional connection to this game that the GRAPHICS MODE SELECTION SCREEN at 7:53 makes my heart beat harder. The other game that does that to me is the original Civilization. I was so young I had no idea what I was doing, but I loved planning and developing my cities. Such a joy to play with. Oh, the memories.

Love the SNES version, it's the one I grew up with. The first version I played was the DOS version on my dad's work PC with a monochromatic display but when I got my SNES I quickly got that version. Its music, art style, bonus buildings etc are so amazing.

Oh man, this game. I remember one specific scenario very well: the nuclear meltdown one. You were supposed to manage the city up until the meltdown happened, and then afterwards it challenged you to recover as best you could before a deadline. But even as a kid, I was eagerly looking for ways to "break the system", and found it on this scenario: simply bulldoze all the nuclear power plants and replace them with coal ones at the beginning of the scenario. If I remember correctly, there are five of them, a few of which are placed out at the edge of the map. When the game goes to trigger the nuclear meltdown, it goes "hey wait a minute, there's no nuclear power plants!" and grants you an instant victory.

Same here, although I still have Sim Copter & Sim Driver. Both came in set with Sim City 2000. I loved using my custom built cities with Copter & Driver. I actually used cheat codes to give MORE money to start with. If you can get your hands on Copter & Driver, and still have the ability to play, I HIGHLY recommend them....

You seem to forget that computer games were for kids (and nerds) back then. It was not just about definition of games, but also about their place in society. These "Software Toys™" and other stuff was about elevated stuff above being a simple game. The same type of stuff is happening now, but the opposite way. Simple games are treated as high art because we have abandoned true art for children's toys.

I poured so many hours into the sequal SimCity 4. When I was 10 - 12 years old I would play it from sun up to sun down. It was the first computer game that I bought new from Walmart. A few years later it became a large reason why I began watching KZbin and most importantly LGR.

Pooper Scooper micro transactions are great in games, they give you the option to change your gameplay and give the game a longer lease of life, the issue is companies like EA are abusing them making games unplayable and unenjoyable if you don’t fork out, Micro transactions aren’t killing EA, EA is killing Micro transactions. Until people stop falling for it then EA will never die.

Excellent video! I revisited Sim City (via the Win 3.1 Classic version) recently and had a lot of fun with it, and it spurred me to check out some of the later ones I missed like 2000 and 3000. I think I have the most fondness for the SNES version thanks to its updated visuals and relaxing music, but playing with a keyboard and mouse via the PC version is great.

Great video. This brought back memories. I remember being in Software Etc. in the Spring of 1990 and my dad asking the employee if this was a good game, hearing that it was one of the best games out and then buying it for me. Hey Clint! You should give Odd Realm a try, maybe do a review of it here. It's only 10 bucks on steam, it's already pretty good and the developer is super responsive. It's a colony management sim with graphics that are reminiscent of DOS games (the sprites remind me of Lemmings), and the music is like something out of old Squaresoft games.

An easy and fun way to "cheat" Sim City is to not build roads and only build metro lines. You completely eliminate traffic and pollution as problems, so you never have to worry about them again. Because the air is so clean and the commutes are so easy, it basically pins your citizens happiness at max all the time, letting you raise taxes to absurd levels. As a bonus, crimes and fires seem to go down a lot, as well.

SimCity was my #1 slot when it came to hours spent in front of my "Spectra" XT clone (later self-upgraded to AT using a m/b found in a cardboard bin at a garage sale). After I finally managed to convince my mom to get me a contemporary 486 machine, that spot got stolen by Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe. These two games were THE defining games on my childhood and adolescence. Love the new intro, btw.
