Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, this game! If there was ever a game that needs a re-make, it's Interstate 76. Speaking of PC gaming history ... this game was my and my roommates' first exposure to the promise of DirectX. On our LAN, we could install the game on one PC, but then run it remotely on up to six machines. After years of CONFIG.SYS tweaking and the like, the idea of running a game on different machines from a single install blew our minds. Thanks for covering this! @IronShocker77 Жыл бұрын
Mad Max 2015 is amazing! I really wish it was longer though and had some minor improvements like a difficulty setting. After a while it gets really easy to get ammo, fuel and water, and the game becomes kinda too easy. Would also be nice if your tires could also be punctured/removed like the enemies', and you'd have to choose between putting heavy armor around wheel arches/hubcaps and slowing your car down or being faster but more vulnerable. I'd love something like having to cross a really big highway between territories, being periodically attacked by enemy parties and having to reach the other side alive without many ways to recover health and ammo. I really thought the desert highway was going to be like that, but it was pretty empty =( I really liked the game, but i wish it had a stronger feeling of never being safe outside a stronghold. Maybe having big trucks full of warboys (like the one in the intro) and scout cars patrolling the road that would actively chase you around, differently from the convoys in the game that just run loops around a predetermined track and just run past you. Or a durability setting for tires/armor, something to spice things up a bit =P

I love this game. But yeah I had to patch it a lot in order for it to run on modern hardware : First - grab the latest official patch (there's quite a few floating around for the different releases, so choosing one that won't break the game is quite hard), and make it not erase the French localization of the menus with an hex editor Second - RIP the CD music and make the music work with _inmm.dll (Japanese software) so it can loop while playing Third - Apply Compatibilty mode to the game (Windows 98 is the best choice IIRC) Fourth - Make the game use one CPU core with the START utility and /affinity 1 command line argument, and before that launch an utility that will use 90% of the first core so the physics engine will not go insane. Fifth - Use Direct3D mode (IIRC, I used it with dgVoodoo2 so it worked better). My God, it's still the longest list of modifications I had to make on any game. But it's well worth it ! I've been thinking about releasing this "mega patch" for a while. Both for the French release and the English release with the extension. But I havent't tested it with the Nitro Pack (which wasn't released in France :( ) I still haven't also solved the "problem" that _inmm needs to be installed separately in order to work.

"There are no recharging energy weapons here." *cough cough* Interstate '82 *cough cough* Though, granted, I've never thought Interstate '82 was nearly as bad as its reputation implies; even though it's loaded with some bizarre design decisions that make it play so much more like the games that Interstate '76 was obviously better than in comparison, not to mention being rather blatantly rushed. I think it's better than the V8 games it aligned itself closer with, especially since it kept all of the charm that the original had that V8 series didn't quite understand. Still, this one is very clearly the better game of the two, and when I saw it in a Best Buy bargain bin in 1999 after downloading the demo earlier in the year I simply had to have it. I fondly remember closely following the superb walkthrough of the game Gamespot had up. There is just so much depth to this game, and I don't think any other game in the "genre" has ever come close to matching it. Do you load up with flamethrowers and lose all long term range and risk losing all salvage but tear through everything like butter? Or just chain machine guns and cannons and make things much harder to actually land shots but have a chance to snipe enemies as soon as they load into view? Try playing with mortars and bypass enemy armor ratings, but risk missing enemies entirely and blowing yourself up? Load up armor on the front and hit everyone headon? Spread it out so you can get more work out of the pistol and cover your flanks? Or go for maneuverability, loading up on chassis reinforcement instead of armor so offroad driving doesn't damage you and running hit and run tactics when the heavy clunker cars the AI drove couldn't hope to follow you? Do you tackle the missions immediately or (when applicable) explore the huge wide open maps to find alternate vantage points to complete objectives? Even performance of your car. The supercharger and V10 engine sure sound cool as soon as you salvage them. Can you reliably control either without killing yourself? And that's just for the campaign with the Phiranna, nevermind all the options you could fiddle with the cars in the Instant Action. There really is a ridiculous amount of gameplay in this game, and I remember hours of fun just trying missions with different tactics and loadouts from what was suggested. I remember learning one of the Instant Action missions (Mondo Burger) could be completed by just completely ignoring the defined race route, loading up a light car with the biggest engine or a supercharger, little armor and two powerful guns and *flooring* it in an alternate route that had no reason to be in the game except for the developer's to see if someone would try it; and I learned that several other missions (Campaign and otherwise) could be completed the same way. I even uncovered secret ways to finish missions completely on accident when I was attempting to record a playthrough of the game on KZbin. It was the first time I had ever experienced the kind of developer's foresight that games like Metal Gear Solid made so much more famous years later.

It's funny you call the pistol a desperation weapon, it was actually the most OP thing in the game. The way the pistol worked was anything that had a green or yellow life bar was immune; once it was in the red, though, the pistol could finish the driver of the car off with impunity. Combine this with the fact that fire damage bypassed armor, and the fact that ANY damage to internal car systems, even something as inconsequential as a single tire, was interpreted by the game as putting that car in the red, and boom. I was a part of an I76 multiplayer gang that exploited this quirk of the game to use the pistol and napalm to do battle with the stream of cheaters who used hex editing to give their cars infinite armor and chassis reinforcement. I made a lot of friends out of that experience, and had a lot of great times as a member of the I76 online community. Many of those same people. along with myself, were invited to beta test Nitro Pack and the sequel, Interstate '82. A dubious honor, considering how that game turned out, but an honor nonetheless.This game's disc stayed in my car for years, even after the gang and I had moved on to other things. The music is just as good playing on the radio in a real car as it is in the game.
@danwake44315 жыл бұрын
@xh1927 maybe you and I did battle back in the day :) I remember some guy gave me a tutorial on the hex editing. In the end I had a big 2 speed Lincoln that was insanely fast. It wouldn't even start out in 2nd gear. You'd start in 1st then hit 2nd and i was gone. People used to drag race at an old airport. The modded guys would launch off the end and land a couple miles away. He also showed how to be impervious to everything. You didn't even need the armor. Somewhere in the hex files i made it so that my computer thought that everybody in the game was out of ammo. Even my own car. So in a battle I would be circling around another car holding the trigger down. But there was no bullets, no fire, no explosions. On my screen it was just two cars driving around but on everyone else's screen it was war. But it didn't last long since i wasn't taking any damage , i would eventually kill the other guy. Even the guys that tried to hunt me down with fire because it was so powerful, didn't work on me or guys who knew the best hex tricks. i kept original copies of the edited files so i could play normally as well. but every once in a while it was fun to be in God mode.

I always wondered how they did it, since it was hardcoded and not subject to changing any variable. The method you described explains it pretty handily; sounds like you found a way to weaponize what we called Ghost Bullet Syndrome.But no number of hacks can outstrip our fair accomplishments, even if the Asbestos Hack was what finally made us throw up our hands and move on to Quake 2.
@danwake44315 жыл бұрын
@@XH1927 actually, pondering on it some more, the actual hex hack was to tell my computer that no one in the game had any reloads left. So you had one burst of ammo or fire and then my computer wouldn't recognize any more attacks from you. I dont remember the editing that gave our cars so much horsepower but it was a LOT.

Oh I love this game. Still have the gog version running at 1080p with 3dfx emulator on this rig. But using my 166 mmx with a voodoo 1 to play this is still the best. Though I remember when they added the Nitro patch for free with 3dfx support less then a year later how amazing I thought it looked. I could just drive around for hours goofing around with it.

***** I have a P3 at 550Mhz with a Voodoo 3 as well. But the 166 is the rig I had when I got this game. Just feel right with it :P

Well I have a Creative Voodoo 2 lying around. Only one I don't have from 1 to 5 is a Voodoo 4. But the prices on those have jumped to much of late. One of the main reasons why I have the voodoo 1 on mine is that the 3dfx version of Mechwarrior 2 don't work on Voodoo 2.
@Balc0ra8 жыл бұрын
I bought mine years ago for 4 euros each. Only played Unreal gold with SLI and got a 10 FPS improvement vs just the one. The Voodoo 1 is a Diamond Monster 3d that I've had since 1997. My voodoo 3 card is mostly used for late 3dfx games that I bought used in 2002 or something. And my Voodoo 5 card is the 4th variant of the 6000 series. And not the best option vs other 128mb cards I have. That I bought in 2009 just before the prices started to rise on those.

What can I say. I've been a 3dfx fanboy for since 96. And was gutted when the line died out.

You did this game justice with your great review. How did you get the graphics so much better than what other people post for their game play videos? I find it incredible that there were so many games back in the day that delivered so much in terms of features and details, which no other game has matched. For example this game, the original jagged alliance series, the original Fallout games, the original X-Com, and Decent Freespace. Developers and gamers are more concerned now about pretty graphics than about details and game play features . . . and story. I wonder if Jules Winfield's character in Pulp Fiction (Samuel L. Jackson) was inspired by the poetry in this game? So many things this game did right. :)

If i understand you right you asking was Jules inspired by this game? Actually Taurus character was inspired by Shaft, Superfly and Jules as this game came out in 1997.
@squirrelattackspidy8 жыл бұрын
Good one man. I didn't realize until now that Pulp Fiction came out before this game.

Actually some people thought that Samuel.L.Jackson voiced Taurus as Greg Eagles was asked to sound like him.

been waiting for this review for years! this was my first self purchased big box PC game. A few years later I even got a hold of the replica i76 branded cars based off Jade's Picard Piranha. Nitro pack is full of prequel missions that add more history to the characters, and 82 is a fantastic dip into 80s stereotypes that's thankfully playable on modern hardware.

It doesn't even work beyond Windows 9X, it's way too arcade-like, the weapons are ass, the damage system has become way too simple, the AI is broken, and overall it's not worth it. :( And IIRC, it also has a stupid DRM on top.

Absolutely loved this game... When it worked. And pistol out the window was the best way to finish someone off without an ensuing fireball meaning the salvage had a lot less damage. It took some skill and patience to drive while looking out the side windows though.

now this is a game which gives me good memories and wibes !! It was still an "open world" as new as it was back then and i enjoyed it troughout the story.. A good story in a game is important as an gameplay itself and this had both ! a masterpiece.

I never did get my hands on this game as a kid, but I did have those other two advertised in the box! I had lots of fun with the Dark Reign map editor, and I loved Heavy Gear. I hear there's a remake in the works, but I have to admit being skeptical about it. Loving the reviews, as always. It's been really cool watching this channel grow into what it is today. So much better than TV!

Still one of the my most fondly remembered games. The whole action-sim genre with its complex missions during which you werent allowed to save was a blast and needs to make a proper comeback like classic RPGs did recently. btw, that Pistol is incredibly powerful as it allows you to shoot the drivers once the vehicle is in the "red" giving you more to salvage. Very useful with flame-throwers as they instantly destroy the armor of enemies.

I'm so glad you did this review! This was a blast from the past. I remember getting a demo of this game in a magazine. Loved it ! This was one of the few vehicular action games at that time, and possibly the only one where you could load weapons on the cars! I think there was Twisted Metal for the Play station but on PC this might have been the only one those days... Cheers and best wishes Clint! Sid *Oops just saw the entire clip.
