😅I was actually surprised to see how bad the JPEG are on my DSLR!!

It's actually not completely correct. I know that DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have poor jpgs. A Google Nexus 5x = Pixel 0 from 2015/2016 in HDR+ On mode delivers about the same jpgs as Pixel phones nowadays (Google didn't improve their daylight quality over the years, I also have a Pixel 3a, which is worse). Wide angle auto jpgs of a Canon camera can usually not compete with a Google Nexus 5x, it's not even close. But when you adjust the settings (white balance, lowest contrast setting, Highlight Tone Priority must be turned on, other picture style settings) you can get much (!) better Canon jpgs than the default Canon jpgs. Then, when you use a portrait lens, it's often not necessary to edit the photo, you can still get good results.

Other cameras, for example from Nikon, give you more dynamic range settings (Active D Lighting) than Canon. The difference can be quite extreme as far as I know.

I was finally able to afford a DSLR for the first time this year after wanting one for years; then after I got it I realized just how much post processing you have to do with a standalone camera compared to a smartphone camera (not to mention having to go through the trouble of transferring all your photos over from your camera to your pc to edit them). Now I mostly just use my Pixel 4a to take pics and my camera just stays in the case.

I am just amazed how far smartphone cameras have evolved since I first started using one in 2006. Given the tiny lens and tiny sensors of smartphones I never expected it to come this far. Its never meant to replace DSLRs and it never will. But with cameras like iPhones and Pixels, I am not really missing out when I have to take a quick snap for social media.

Yep, exactly! I find weird why people get so mad when making the comparison. They both I have their use cases: I love being able to quickly capture high quality images without having my camera bag with me but still enjoy the process and added quality of doing a more « serious » photo shoot.

Are you surprised by the result? ✨✨UPDATE TO AWNSER SOME QUESTIONS/CONCERNS ✨✨ ● My goal was to compare both camera in auto settings and "auto" editing. For my Canon, my settings were 16 mm, f/2.8, everything else auto. I processed most RAW from the Canon using only the "auto" option in Lightroom. ● When I said that not using RAW for taking picture on DSLR is unjust, it's referring to the fact that the Pixel does its post processing on a RAW files. In my opinion, Lightroom does a better job at post-processing than the internal RAW to JPEG conversion. ● Like mentioned at the end of the video, I still think that DSLR/mirrorless are better *if* you take the time to choose the right setting and edit the photos. If you want to take a picture without thinking, a phone might do a better job. ● @Quoutub noted that some information I said is inaccurate. The Pixel 4a doesn't use bracketing, it does takes multiple, underexposed, shots, but they are all the same exposure. Then they average each Pixel to reduce noise in the shadows. In Night Sight, AI doesn't do anything for the sharpness of the image. It's used for separating the sky and the auto white balance. @@asssagar Thanks! Yes I heard that too. I don't plan on buying it but the Pixel does have a Sony lens in it (as does iPhones). The advantage of the Sony is that you get more control on the camera but I personally like leaving the phone do the capture/post processing on my phone.

What a fantastic video! You are the only one I know of who did a comprehensive comparison between dslr and the latest smartphone image quality. You just demonstrated that Pixel, Iphone or any current phones big on computational optics can definitely go head to head with dslr or mirrorless in practical cases. The only advantages dslrs have are flexibility, consistent image quality in the lens, resolution and auto focus department. Using a multiple equipment strategy for hobbyists and enthusiasts, getting a smartphone with computational photography would definitely save you from getting wide angle prime lenses so you can use your dslrs or mirrorless cameras for zooms and portrait shots instead.

5:53 Night Sight doesn't use AI for making things visible. In Night Sight mode they use "AI" for the white balance and for digital zoom. Many people don't seem to understand what AI is. AI can not give you new, real details, Night Sight and HDR+ are using physics in order to let you see more.

I study software engineering, I understand and totally understand what AI is. My understanding is that they use object recognition to determine the different parts of the picture and apply different exposures to different sections. I might be wrong, I never looked at the code. Also I never said we get new details, I said the picture is more detailed compared to the blurry one of the DSLR.

They also use machine learning in order to identify the sky, so they can make the sky darker and apply noise reduction to the sky. In astro mode this helps them to increase the contrast of the milky way. So it's not wrong, but Night Sight doesn't really invent new details (what AI would do), it captures more light by capturing multiple exposures and by using a longer exposure time per frame. This way it can give you more details. Night Sight uses the same exposure settings for all frames.

@@loicba Maybe I can ask a question.....I take a lot of wild flower pictures, similar to yours @11:05. I was very happy with the results of my Pixel 3A, as the focus was almost always perfect. I also used a macro clip-on which brought details out you could not normally see on very small flowers. But, I had build-quality issues with the 3A, and now for the last week have the iPhone12 pro and the Samsung Galaxy s20 to compare.....both struggle at times with blurry close-ups, so I have to zoom in and move back, then sometimes take several shots and hope one is really good. I read that there is a software bug with the iPhone and the next update is supposed to improve the close-ups, but I'm almost ready to send it back and just get a 4A or 5....I would lean towards the 5 for the water-rating and stronger glass. Do you have experience with the iPhone or Galaxy ? Thanks again !

People in my family have a mix of iPhone and Samsung. The reason that the Pixel autofocus is so good is because it use a dual pixel system (vs phase detection in iPhone and Samsung). I would say iPhone have better video and Samsung crazy specs. It really depends what you want. Apple and Samsung also have ecosystems that you should consider.

I think the phone is better. you have to be super precise on the dslr for focus shots. and the picture quality was way better on the phone. but the camera has better long exposure/night shots. if the phone was a camera, they would be charging like $1000, but its a phone AND a camera for like $370 after tax. insane. great video man!

Love my Pixel 4a5g. It goes without saying a nice DSLR and lens blows it away but the best camera you have is the one you have one you. And it performs great. I do find the Portrait mode to be absolutely horrendous and grainy. The normal shooting mode, and night mode, are both amazing

@@bolleSailor That's how RAW pictures work, you get the all the information but no brigthness, contrast, saturation, etc. adjustments. The "post processing" I was referring to, is stitching the pictures together and other steps they apply to create the image.

Great video! I have a Canon dslr, which I love. But it's a heavy beast to carry around with all the kit, so for casual shots when I'm out and about (or cycling) I'm just about to buy a Pixel 4a 5g. I use Lightroom to post-process my RAW dslr shots, and Snapseed to process my mobile phone shots with the inferior camera. So looking forward to the Pixel (not released in the UK yet).

I think it's a great for that! I live using my Pixel when cycling!! You should enable RAW capture on the Pixel if you so extra flexibility (but honestly they do a great job 95% of the time!)

Yes, I didn't reframe when zooming and I was slightly off when I framed at 1x. I should have done the framing at 7x.

I have 6D Mark II. Paid $1.4k for it. Totally worth it. Phones can’t match DSLR at all! BUT.. as you have already mentioned.. post processing is pivotal in this case. Those who don’t like it then they should opt for a Pixel for sure.

I agree! If I am planning to go shoot or if I see an incredible scenery, I reach out for my DSLR. But it's great to know that most of the time I have a pretty good camera in my pocket 🙂

I only got just over 4 minutes in when I noticed most of the DSLR shots were out of focus. Either he's being paid by Google or the DSLR / lens is faulty.

Neither of them. I was shooting at f2.8 for most shots to keep it similar the the f1.8 of the Pixel. The plane of focus is very shallow in this case, which means it's normal that most part of the shots are blurry (out of focus).

@@loicba As you can see, an aperture of f1.8 on a cropped sensor doesn't give the same results as a full frame. You have to take the crop factor into consideration. It would be better to make sure the same amount of the subject is in focus (use a narrower aperture on the full frame) for the comparison because it makes the DSLR look bad. I have a Pixel 3a XL and a Canon 70d (17-55 f2.8). The Pixel is very consistent and much easier to get good results, but with a bit of effort, the DSLR can produce shots that look much better than the Pixel... Done properly, most pictures from the Canon 6d mk2 should easily beat the Pixel.

I know the maths, I am an engineer. My goal wasn't to create a comparison with exact parameters, it's not a science study! My goal was just to show that in some conditions, a phone can produce very good results that can look very similar to the result from a DSLR (if you don't put the effort of using a DSLR to it's full advantage). I still use my DSLR most of the time and edit my shots a lot more than I did for this video, but it wasn't the point of the video...

Great video. I actually have the Pixel4a but didn't have a lot of time to test the camera options yet. Now I am really excited to go out and try it for myself. By the way, your dog looks exactly like my family dog which was distracting, but super fun, and makes me want to try taking nice pictures of him XD The dog is also the main reason I am commenting on a 2 month old video XD
