Believing our house shortage, school places and NHS struggles would be helped by free movement is hardly intellectual. I would say the majority of people are just a mouth piece of the very people who profit from a supply of labour that outstrips demand. Where we are now cannot be completely contributed to us leaving the EU. Which by the way is also in a recession and also includes the US.
@AndyTomlins
@AndyTomlins Жыл бұрын
@@matthewfindlay9010 We don't have enough builders, teachers and nurses. Cutting off the supply of workers is hardly going to help that. Also in modern supply side economics the supply of labour is always the limiting factor. Increasing costs due to labour shortages is hardly going to help the people at the bottom that are hit hardest by the cost of living crisis. Thats why we introduced a minimum wage so labour supply cannot drive down wages of the lowest paid. Labour shortages driving inflation will whack them though. The US isnt in recession its economy grew 4.4%. Neither is the EU. Ours shrank .8%.

I notice James sometimes confuses the terms, free trade, custom union & single market. They're not the same, each one is a term to describe deeper stages of economic integration ending with fiscal union. It didn't help that they got given everything at every stage of their lives too, now they're getting to the end of said lives and they're no longer the centre of attention, but they're still a MASSIVE demographic (hence "boomer", for baby boom") so they still vote in droves and demand to be heard still. I applaud the patience of Brian, he actually ask valid questions and tried to understand the mindset of the leavers. As a Canadian, a third country citizen, it makes no difference for me to enter UK (where I live before Brexit) or Germany (where I live now after Brexit) I guess I don’t feel the heat as much, but I did move to Germany because of Brexit. As a former short-term Londoner, all my friends are remainers. I can almost guarantee you that most people who voted to leave don’t even know what EU is all about. My German partner will tell you that, without EU, the hassle of exchanging currencies, and the restrictions on movement of goods. Considered Germany had one of the strongest currencies in Europe before the EU, the Germans would still tell you that it is better being in the EU than being the outside of it. Imagine all the small European countries having to negotiate separately with all the trade deals, and deal with the fluctuation of the currencies. And if not for the EU, I reckon Russia would invade as many small European countries as they can, seeing the way they strong arm their military. I don’t know, that’s just my guess, but judging by all the superpowers in the world, at least the EU is on a level playing field with the alliance.

I notice James sometimes confuses the terms, free trade, custom union & single market. They're not the same, each one is a term to describe deeper stages of economic integration ending with fiscal union. The UK has a free trade agreement with the EU but the reason it can not engage in friction less economic exchange it once had is because we left the 3rd stage of economic integration, the single market.

Not out of entitlement or advantage however, they earned it diligently over a long course of time through multiple variables. Also, the EU was not set up to “make Germany more prosperous”, it was set up to stabilise the global market after WWII by preventing any allied nations from taking advantage of the destabilisation and essentially continuing the war. Being a member of the EU was essentially a treaty of non-invasion. You can still be eurosceptic and admit that overall it is the most beneficial option in terms of progress, the UK just got greedy and pointed the finger instead of sorting out its internal parliament. Much like the caller in this video.

Unfortunately, it started even earlier in the UK: with Brexit. The anti-EU rhetoric had been building since the 2000s (Farage and his UKIP populist party) but reached a crescendo around 2015 with the announcement of there being a referendum to finally decide our status in the EU....long story short the rightwing populists, which covers most of the British press, and the populist politicians like Farage and Johnson confected a campaign to convince enough disenfranchised to vote against their own best interests and vote to leave the biggest and most successful trading bloc in the world - all to enrich the rightwing elites in the UK, of course. James O'Brien has been trying to hold people to account from day 1....but the populist idiocy, like Trump in the USA, knows no bounds! As you can see in these interviews: "I am right and I don't care about your 'facts'!! My mind is made up."

To me listening to someone, who is proudly living in a monarchy, complain about the EU being undemocratic, is quite funny. That is not to say, I do not think the democratic processes in the EU cannot be improved. I hate that the EU organs are pretty much able to silence or ignore weaker member states ( in terms of population and economic power), dictateing what they should do in terms of their economy. I hate that direct votes from the population are only present in the EU parlament, while both the commission and the council are only legitimised on the grounds of organisational democracy. But that does not mean I hate the EU. The EU is necessary for keeping the european continent as a whole able ro compete with the USA, China and in a few decades india. The EU basically guarantees freedom and relative stability for the member states, by makeing war economically unviable, which as sad as it is, is the only non violent way of doing this. We canallways talk about how to improve, but to just give up is a cowardly option, an option I find deplorable.
