Georadar detects a Viking ship in Norway

Archaeologists armed with a motorized high resolution georadar have found a Viking ship and a large number of burial mounds and longhouses in Østfold County in Norway. The discoveries were made by archaeologists from the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) with technology developed by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection and Virtual Archaeology (LBI ArchPro). The Viking ship find is just below the topsoil, at a depth of approximately 50 cm initially buried in a burial mound. The digital data visualizations reveal a large and well-defined 20 m long ship-shaped structure. The data indicate that the lower part of the ship is still preserved. Further non-invasive investigations are planned to digitally map the unique find and the wider landscape.

The large mound is clearly man made. Was the sea level higher at the time the viking ship was buried (or sunk)? More questions than answers here.

The larger mound was excavated, although it was a lot more deteriorated at the time. It was later reconstructed to look like it is believed to have looked at the time of creation. The mound did not contain a ship however. The buried person was cremated, so not a lot remained. As for the sea level it was higher during the viking age, by a couple of meters i believe.

@@daveberntson4081 The climate might have been different but I do not know much about that. What I do know is that during the last ice age Norway was covered in several kilometres of ice. The enormous mass of this ice pressed the entire country down, and now that the ice is gone, Norway is rebounding from that lower state. This means that the entire country is rising by a couple millimetres each year. That does not sound like much but given enough time, like way back to the viking age, this does mean that the country was several meters lower in the water.
