Although you keep stressing safety, he does not use his fall protection device! They are the two straps with hooks dangling behind him. The linemans rope does nothing to prevent a fall. The fall protection is what is needed to be always connected to the tower.

I also thought proper procedure was to climb without be saddled with tools and supplies, instead letting the ground crew hoist those up once the climber is in position?

3 points of contact is good but useless if not connected to tower in case of a missed step, lineman’s belt will slide to the bottom with the climber.
@n4gix Жыл бұрын
Back in the day (4 decades ago!), I used to make one turn around the leg opposite of me to ensure that the belt would not allow me to fall more than about six inches. That was long before OSHA was making up new rules.

Definitely needs two large climb rated carbiner style clips, to actually clip to the tower structure, just in case of a fall.

This is why I made my Rohn tower a tilting tower. Assemble on ground. Antenna work on "ground". (It actually lays onto the roof of my garage where I can stand and work on the antennas without danger.)
@southboundsuarez98322 ай бұрын
I dunno if I am so sure about that? Raising any tower over 40 or 50 ft from horiz to vertical is pretty freakin dangerous proposition in and of itself. The forces and physics that are placed upon the pivot point as a fulcrum being leveraged against the travel moment of that full length of tower is problematic and fraught with potential failure and catastrophe. Even factory foldover crankup towers have special fixtures that place the pivot point above ground level to negate the force pressures placed upon the foundation mounts at ground level where their is the greatest mechanical disadvantage and forces greatest throuought the moment of travel where at horizontal is greatest.
@MedusalObligation2 ай бұрын
@@southboundsuarez9832 I've been doing sailboat masts for decades. Far smaller and lighter weight pivots and dynamic load as the boat is moving during the operation. My tower is easy in comparison. (and because it lays on a pad on the outbuilding roof when lowered, the lift isn't from horizontal. (More like 30 degrees)

Very great video! Always nice to see people doing what they are the best at. LCARA is very lucky to have a great professional tower climber. And Brian, I think instead of Hawaiian shirts, next time he should come wearing a suit. And to all the ones who are getting all wound up about his safety equipment, or as you people say lack of, he’s been at this since he was 5 years old

what does it cost to have a 50 foot tower put up?
@clearsailing79932 жыл бұрын
I thought they would put guy lines at about 20 ft to stabilize the tower as he went higher.
@southboundsuarez98322 ай бұрын
@clearsailing7993 i believe that this is a Rohn HDBX model or style of tower which is specified as freestanding. Despite what I would think is east to assume, is that guys might not always be beneficial and could negatively impact the overall specifications of a tower. Such as the case with various crankup towers. The downward forces of the guys are in conflict with the vertical lift cable that supports the tower. In the case of the HDBX style of riveted stamped steel construction, the forces of the guys can actually exert forces against the stamped steel laterally. The force is pulling against the radius of the stamping which may cause it to buckle. You would think that they could create a torque ring of some sort like rhe unit used to guy standard towers to prevent pulling a tower legs apart?

That HDBX 48 free standing calls for 8 yards to give it a 90 MPH rating with a inch of ice on it . I have one . And just 4 years ago I put up the HDBX 85 foot it went to 10 yards . For the same loading .

I know all tower workers have their own safety methods but the people who have done tower work for us in the past will lower their tool / supply bag to the ground so it's not in their way when descending. They also have a riggers pulley that they will attach to the top section to lower the gin pole to the ground while they remain at the top. When the pole is down they remove the pulley and take their time returning to the ground. Kinda glad I don’t get involved with this any more, too old for climbing and bad knees.
@Myis300t Жыл бұрын
36" depth? No rebar? Not even close. You have 100% exposure all around. What are you putting on top a 2m whip? Would not be caught dead climbing that. My 48' tower has engineered 8' deep 4' diameter hole, rebar cage and just over 4 yards of concrete. Rated for 20 sq. ft wind load @100mph and a K factor rating of around 2200Ft. lbs. This is scary...

@andrewfiertek59372 жыл бұрын
Would have been smarter if he wore a helmet and he was 100% secure to the tower at all times which he’s not. Video is missing a lot of safety equipment especially the most important is helmet, leather gloves or gloves and a Y or V line lanyard. Lineman’s belt is only good if you go through a rung but to move several feet up or down and being attached 100% is to have the Y or V lanyard. If he slips or has a medical condition he comes down the tower smashing his face on every rung. Ground person should wear a helmet in case something falls, safety glasses and gloves. Knowing your location and a safety plan where to meet emergency personnel in case of an emergency. The gin pole is nice. But safety should NOT be taken lightly and know one needs to copy your build because of all the missing items.
@ka1ze7492 жыл бұрын
The comments are spot on. 100% contact with the tower is a must! In case of a fall you need to be wearing a helmet to prevent head injury. Also , the climbing belt should be secured to each thigh to insure the tower worker will not be able to slide out.

Nice showing a tower raised however, he has multiple safety violations. 1. No hard hat, 2. No use of safety lanyards, 3. Ground persons with no hard hats. If OSHA had seen this it would have been a $42,000 fine. Nothing safe about how this was done.

Guys Rhône specs for the HDBX 48. 8 yards concrete ! Did you all guy that tower ? Plus those home made stubs only have 2 bolts on each leg factory 3 I do hope there is nothing valuable around the foot print of that tower . I had one then got a HDBX 85 it went to 10 yards of Crete . They if you contact them will send you specs for the base and the stubs are just $100 I did that and put a lot of steel in mine all welded to the stubs it rated at 90MPH constant wind with a inch of ice build up . I just have one fm transmitter antenna and 3 microwave 16 inch drums on it for the internet. Nothing close to the 5 square foot load to that spec . That and I hope he did not ground it from the bottom of the home made stubs that will cause if hit a good lighting strike will blow the concrete to smithereens !
