Great content with a sufficiently nuanced explanation. @Janna total cholesterol includes cholesterol in VLDLs, LDLs, HDLs, IDLs, lp(a) and chylomicrons. but the half-life of each is VERY different. normally most cholesterol is in LDLs, HDLs and some in VLDLs. at the end of the day, cholesterol level is a surrogate for number of apoB-carrying lipoproteins (mainly LDLs and VLDLs). the amount of macronutrients can influence lipoprotein metabolism but also the TYPE of macros. saturated vs unsaturated fats have very different effects. it's possible to maintain good lipids overall with a higher or lower fat diet, higher or lower carb. there's also some individual variability as always

Thanks for another great video. I've listened to a number of lipidoligists talk on various podcasts, but apparently this subject is incredibly complex and I'm thankful that you've broken down at least a little piece of it. While it's not necessarily cholesterol, I'd love to see you talk about the interplay between inflammation levels (measured via HS-CRP) and LDL-Cholesterol and/or LDL, and how different thresholds of each might result in increased risk. I currently have very low LDL-Cholesterol, 32, but that's with 10mg of Crestor, and pretty low HS-CRP - 0.33, so I'm not really worried about myself, although I've never had my LDL-P or APO-B measured so I wonder if I should try to get these done on my next lipid panel just to make sure I don't have that "disconnect."

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🔍 LDL and LDL cholesterol are distinct entities with different roles in the body's lipid transport system. 00:27 🚗 LDL and HDL are types of lipoproteins responsible for transporting fats, including cholesterol, in the bloodstream. 01:24 📊 Total cholesterol in the bloodstream is the sum of cholesterol carried by different lipoproteins, including LDL and HDL. 02:17 🩺 Scientific evidence suggests a correlation between high LDL-cholesterol levels and heart disease in both lab animals and human population studies. 03:42 🧬 Genetic differences influence LDL-cholesterol levels, but lifestyle changes can still significantly impact cholesterol management. 04:36 🔑 Strong consensus in the scientific community supports the causal relationship between elevated LDL-cholesterol and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. 05:31 🚗 The quantity of lipoprotein particles, not just cholesterol content, is a critical factor in cardiovascular health. 06:27 📈 Testing for apoB and LDL-P can provide insights into the number of lipoprotein particles, complementing the information provided by LDL-cholesterol levels. 08:17 🚫 Raising HDL-cholesterol levels might not provide cardiovascular benefits as previously believed, based on various trials and studies. 09:39 🔄 Avoid oversimplifying the role of lipoproteins as merely 'good' or 'bad' cholesterol, as the context is more nuanced and complex. @@bdancestars no. balance of evidence indicates it is advantageous. there have been no hormonal issues (which was one of the main concerns) reported in people with LDL-C as low as ~25mg/dL. @davidmoser89012 жыл бұрын
Dear Gil Carvaloh, I just watch a lot of your "cholesterol" videos. They are very informative and cleared a lot of confusion. Some questions arose during watching them: 1. What is the good function of LDL and LDL-Cholesterol when the level is "normal" and good? 2. What is the function of HDL and HDL Cholesterol? 3. In which protein carriers are triglycerides transported? I assume in LDL and HDL? Is there anyting to add there? 4. You mentioned that the HDL:LDL ratio doesn't say much about the risk of CVD. How about the HDL:TG ratio? I read some studies suggesting that the HDL:TG ratio is a good indicator for CVD. 5. There are a lot of graphics on the internet showing that the smaller the LDL the worse. You clearly showed that it is about the particle number not about the size. But is it safe to say that people with more small Pattern B LDL tend to have more particles as well? 6. Are pattern B LDL linked to increase insulin resistance? 7. If non-HDL lipoproteins are in a "good" level why don't the enter the artery wall? Or do they? 8. HDL don't enter the artery wall just because they have a different APO on it? I assume it is not about the size since HDL are even smaller then all LDL. 9. I guess you never mentioned the healthy level of ApoB? Can you do that? 10. What tells the body to produce more LDL? I assume it is not only the LDL-Cholesterol since those numbers don't exactly match. You mentioned that sometimes the carrier/bus (LDL) is full of particles/people (LDL-Cholesterol) and sometimes it is have empty. I hope you can answer some of those questions in your upcoming videos... Cheers David, Basel Switzerland

Hi Dr Gil, I appreciate your channel, you're:;one of the only people I trust on this very confusing issue of health and diet. But I am still a little confused about this topic. I am fifty five years old and relatively healthy ,I eat a mainly plant based diet with fish and eggs occasionally. I just got a lipid Panel for the first time. This is what it says. Total 144 HDL 45 Triglycerides 63 LDL 85 From what I have read,it seems that the LDL and triglycerides are ok but the HDL seems on the low side. What do you think?

I have some questions: why is there not a top limit to HDL cholesterol if too much is harmful? It should be over 40 in man, but what's the optimal value? Is there an optimal ratio between total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol?

I noticed a high HDL level on my blood panel 2 years ago. I told my sister and she said, oh yea, that's hereditary; Mom had that. I got online to see what to do about high cholesterol, and they literally described the lifestyle I have lived for years: excellent diet, exercise, etc. I forgot about it until a G. I. Dr. suggested I get a Cardiac calcium scan. It says online, "0-100 normal, 100-200 moderate heart disease, Over 300 high risk of heart attack- immediate treatment recommended". My results came back at 375. I have had liver disease from performing my trade working with solvents, so meds are out. I get nowhere with research because everything is geared towards raising HDL levels- not lowering them. I did a Cardio Stress Test and did not show ischemic restrictions. Is there anything I can do to reduce the calcium in my coronary arties?

Vitamin k2 and plant sterols from what I know. K2 transports calcium from soft tissues to bones and teeth and plant sterols will help lower cholesterol

I think the proper question is WHY LDL accumulates on artery walls. Does it clump arbitrarily or in low flow areas? Does it clump in a particular location for a reason, say inflammation? If yes, then the question becomes, what causes the inflammation that damages arteries resulting in the clumping of LDL? I have heard and read doctors who suggest that if the cause of inflammation is addressed, the presence of LDL becomes moot.

inflammation increases risk further but is not necessary for plaque to start, see kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIaao5mefM5gipY for more details on causes of heart disease see kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6jdf6GLndaIsMU

Great Job....just got my blood work back LDL was 70. I don't understand why there was no HDL information or triglycerides or total cholesterol number. Pisses me off that the information is not complete.

Good detail that I had not heard before. Thanks for pealing it back a level (or two) to help us better understand what's really going on!

I brought my LDL down to the optimal level using Lipitor. Does this mean that I can eat eggs without worrying?

I didn't even get lab results, my Dr just said "your cholesterol levels are just above what we consider high. You can go on statins for the rest of your life now, or try and reduce your cholesterol with lifestyle changes, and we'll test again in a couple of months" I chose lifestyle changes, and got retested a few months later. I then got a text saying "your blood test shows you could do with reducing your cholesterol. We advise another test in 12 months"

I love the way you review the foundations of science, study design, and interpretation each video. I think this is extremely important for the general population, which generally have a very limited (if existent) knowledge of science, and who are surrounded by misinformation. The truth is the judged by those who shout the loudest! These videos go some of the way towards explaining the reasons behind science. Just excellent.

What about LDL particle size? I didn't see you talking about that.

Hi. I am 52 this year. A year ago I had test report as such: LDL 3.2 mmol/l, HDL 2.0; Triglyceride 1.1 and total cholesterol at 5.7mmol. I took 3 eggs a day since for a full year and this was the result:- LDL 3.8 mmol; HDL 1.5; Triglyceride 0.7 and total cholesterol remains 5.7 mmol. Can you comment on such reading?

What about the different types of LDL? What about the oxidation of LDL because of blood sugar? What about high LDL on ketogenic diet?

Dr. Esselstyn claims that a TC under 150....mine is 60.. means your liver can not create plaque. Is there any proof of this?
