In season 13, flare gun was actually the best weapon to kill Greg boss. Flare+ any good dps weapon, melts almost everything.

I use the flare gun to take out the Ravager. Takes about half durability and the Ravager doesn't even spit as long as you stay close enough to her.

best use of this gun is at PD. So when the explosive zombie comes running at you shoot at it one time and then run for a bit and then shoot again when the fire goes down shoot again and then explosive zombie dies faster than shooting

It deals 15 damage, you need 9+ damage inorder to damage the big one, technically it works but it's not worth it, using neutraliser and AK-47 is currently the best way to kill the big one
