the fact that people have to pay to go on missions when the church could easily pay for everyone is crazy

Members do not have to pay to go on missions. If they can't afford it the Church (usually starting with the missionary's local ward) steps in. I'd venture to guess, if the Church came up with a policy that missionaries will automatically have their mission's expenses paid for critics would find something to say about it. The Church donates 10s of millions (conservative estimate) to various organizations, communities and causes yearly and internationally. (Google it) Haters are going to hate and critics are going to criticize.

I dont think i'm ever going to forget literally *leaving the TEMPLE* to see a homeless person standing there very clearly in need of help and here because supposedly this was a good church where good people went to help? and nudging my dad to give something (because i was a broke 12 year old with no money at that point) and he said that the church advised against giving anything to the homeless or poor, and instead donating to the church instead because "if you give the homeless money who knows what they'll spend it on, but the church will use that money to help them live instead of buy drugs or alcohol". Ever since then if i see someone in need of money I do my best to give what I can because screw that, much to the chagrin and annoyance of my parents.

Maybe they spend it on drugs, but withdrawals seriously suck. Can you imagine going through it homeless? I can't fix their addiction for them so I won't complain if they use my donation to avoid withdrawing in the streets.

What someone chooses to do with the money you give them says more about them than you. If you deem they chose a bad option that isn’t your fault, that’s their choice. What happened to agency? Besides, you don’t know their life or what’s best for them.

Btw if the thing stopping you from supporting a homeless person is that you don't want them to use it on drugs or alcohol, you could just go and buy them food or something else they need. My mom does this sometimes, she asks the person what they'd like to eat and fetches it from the nearest store or restaurant. But to be clear I personally agree that drug addiction isn't as simple as just suddenly deciding to or being forced to stop. That's why supervised injection sites with trained staff are a thing, for example, even though it might at first sound counterproductive.

Hey Guys! Great episode as usual. Just as an interesting point, Orthodox Jews are required to give 10% of all their earnings (even money gifts ) as well but not to a church or rather synagogue but any charitable cause. Anything you chose to give to, you give all your 10% but the law feels a lot more humane to me since we are exempt from the giving if we are in a position of asking n to have our basic needs met. Sending love from Israel❤ love your Channel and find what you discuss so fascinating even though I’ve never even encountered a Mormon in my life 😅😊

I was raised Catholic near Baltimore, and moved to Alabama for university. My first friend was a southern Baptist (I had never met one before) and I completely freaked out when she told me she gave 10% of her meager income to her church! I went to her church with her several times and though I loved Catholic mass, i hated Baptist services. In mass, the priest would take bible stories and use them to teach a life lesson during his sermon. The Baptist preacher’s sermon was always taking a verse of the Bible and telling the congregation what specifically was meant by the words. Boring! I maintain that Protestantism is just Catholicism with all the magic and fun removed… and they make you pay top dollar to do it!😜

So fascinating. I've only been to Mass as a kid and teen so I always wondered how the others do it. For example, the snippets I've seen of megachurch services are so alien to me, and then there's the very stripped-down shouty preaching churches, etc. I am not practicing anymore, but I do remember the feeling of a nice homily with a relatable life lesson. Some of those were just about being kind to people and helping the less fortunate and being careful about judging others.

From what I've seen so far, the main objective was to prevent the church members from knowing how much money the church had accumulated from tithing money and diverted to managed assets (which magically became "not tithing money"), instead of being used to generously fund practical church operations (such as providing adequate allowances to missionaries for food, safe housing and healthcare, or actually hiring janitors at a decent wage to make sure that the "cleanliness is next to godliness" aspect of the church's houses of worship could be properly seen to). As an incident of their efforts to conceal the church's actual accumulated wealth (in the form of "tithing dollars" converted to "non tithing dollars") their scheme of creating multiple shell companies (nothing but puppets with no independence that do not operate as going concerns in their own right) violated an obligation to properly report the total amount of assets under management (of Ensign Peak Advisors, which had ALL of the actual control of the shell companies'/puppet companies' nominal assets) and the ultimate principal owner of the assets (the church, or more accurately, the corporate legal fiction that owns church stuff). Technically it was a reporting violation. They didn't report required information. It probably would not be categorized as fraud, since the only investors in the shell companies would be EPA (who actually had total control over the shell companies). Investments would have been made through the shell companies into the stock markets/securities markets, for the ultimate benefit and profit of the church (i.e. the church's account with EPA).

Since the sexual crimes by priests in the Roman Catholic Church exploded into the news, churches in my area of the world started closing at a stunning rate - not for lack of money, but for lack of parishioners, especially younger folks, willing to continue attending Church services. The sold-off properties have since become exclusive condos, commercial properties, or the churches of other denominations. So keep an eye on your local Temples, and if you see a For Sale sign out in front, consider it a Sign of the Secular Times.😂

Isn't that illegal? Exchanging your food benefits is federally illegal, and anything over $100 is a felony. It's considered welfare fraud. If it's a free will donation of food, that's one thing, but I will openly doubt it's actually optional for her, and that's illegal as fuck. They can't make her donate her government assistance, and if it could be proven the church forces her to, you'd have a lawsuit pretty easily. The feds do not fuck around with the abuse of food stamps, and there's an entire department dedicated to investigating fraud on behalf of benefit recipients, and businesses/organizations that abuse the system as well. If you can get documents saying they make her donate benefits, you could get the church in a shit storm of trouble.

They keep simple members in the dark. There is social hierarchy just like in the secular world so to speak, the LDS & RLDS are integrated into society. FLDS isn't integrated, let's not get into them. It's a little different in ways especially with the women section, for me the aspect of priesthood gave more cohesive ness and social structure to the male aspect of this religion, also Utah is not the same as the rest of America or the rest of the global churches. I grew up in a USA military dominant Church, as I was 3 y/o the Dutch and American churches merged, and the Dutch members seemed to dwindle - it was quite a culture shock for me. But also a blessing in disguise more or less, I grew up with English as my second/third language. If you are born into this this is your norm/normalcy this is your primary social bubble, the secular layer is secondary. But you also don't talk money like that in church. I agree it is weird, I am glad I was gay and was what in the end made me leave and get excommunicated. I was born into but also never went on a mission. I have missed the sense of community that I grew up with, after I left.

I wonder how many TBM or indeed any higher-ups realise that to many people, the phrase 'the good name of the Church' is seen as an oxymoron?

"God is punishing us..." coincidence: I was teaching high school Mythology & introducing archetypes w/ images on a bulletin board, like creator, destroyer, earth mother, hero, etc. Just as I introduced deities who function as JUDGE AND PUNISHER, the PRINCIPAL unlocked the door and burst into the room, apparently trying to intimidate and round up a perceived rule-breaker with the element of surprise. His attempt at being badass failed miserably when the whole class broke into hysterical laughter at his entrance. It became a favorite funny memory for the whole class and everyone they told! Like many mediocre white men, Mr. Man relied on emotional manipulation rather than professional expertise for his "authority." He is an endless source of anecdotes of incompetence from decades at that school; we laugh to keep from crying at the abuse of power & waste of time, energy, and resources of public tax $. Be well, friends!

Ok I had the most traumatic, sleazy relationship with a high ranking Mormon leader - yes I said Mormon. This guy was my doctor. He and my ex husband were attracted to each others wives (creepily we look like sisters). She wanted to swing. My ex starts sleeping with his wife. He gives me a sob story about how they’re both cheating on us, so we should be together. I’m shell shocked & stupid. So I do it. Oh and he’s very good looking and mega rich. He confesses a week before I’m going to leave my husband for him that he & my ex secretly planned this. I dumped him. And what he told me about the LGBT. The Prophet someday will announce they’re tolerant, once their homophobia becomes too unpopular. He knew the Prophet didn’t talk to God, he was obsessed with power. Nice twist that he was my doctor & doing this was illegal. There’s my story about the LDS. Of course they got back together. They’re still publicly a Mormon power couple. Nice.

@@ZelphOntheShelf I know. I’m a Christian in a accepting Baptistish super positive church, I don’t have hate in my heart for them. The sexism though is so extreme, the hypocrisy. We argued a lot about gay people, my brother was gay. He did protect them & shelter them from being ex communicated secretly. I believe him. I was with him for a year & a half. But can they ever get honest? I know he sounds sleazy, he is in many ways. But he married at 19 a virgin. She left him & slept with half of Austin - I saw it. Including my husband. It’s true. He was left alone with 4 girls. It was 15 years ago. I loved & hated him. The LDS church badly needs honesty & reform. I don’t think they’re beliefs are all just false. They help each other so much. I have such mixed feelings about them. And no, I’m not kidding. He was at the top over all of Texas and nationally. The state Bishop’s right hand man. I’m amazed he told me such secrets. But people need to know. And the Bishop. Such hypocrisy. One rule for the rich men, another for them. Many of them had mistresses like me. He stopped even trying to hide it. This isn’t Christian. They can do better.

Tithing, Inc. is a shining example of the chorus of a song appropriately named "The Preacher and the Slave". You will eat, bye and bye In that glorious land above the sky Work and pray, live on hay You'll get pie in the sky when you die Even more fitting considering that the man that wrote that song was executed in Utah for a crime he very clearly did not commit because his labor activism freaked out the powers that be.

Caught with billions, buy property and building materials tax free the following year. Folks, property only increases in value. It’s just another way to hold onto money. You have a $100 bucks, you buy a piece of land for a $100 bucks, you still have a $100 bucks. After 10 years, you might have $200 bucks. Such a scam.

That will be one of the names used for their next series of shell companies: "Liahona Peak, LLC"; "New Era Peak, LLC"; "The Friend Peak, LLC"; "Millennial Star Peak, LLC"; "Times and Seasons Peak, LLC"; and "Hooters Peak, LLC". Oh, wait! The last one belongs in a separate Joseph Smith themed set of shell companies. Sorry for the confusion. ;o)
