My history with polygamy has been interesting. 1. When I was 19 I was dating a guy whose dad was a polygamist. I withheld a lot of me because I didn't know what was going to happen religious-wise. He eventually left whichever group he was in and joined the LDS. I don't know what he is doing now. 2. For some reason someone decided to set me up on a blind date with a guy whom I assume was FLDS. It was back in the 90s and I assume he was FLDS because he had a calendar or something with his church leaders and I was so confused that their prophet wasn't functioning (and now I know Warren's dad had some issues) and they had a lot of empty spots in their leadership positions. To my young 23ish brain it didn't make sense. And that at least 3 wives thing. I remember him talking about that. 3. Went out with Sister Missionaries from the LDS church. They were teaching a young lady who was raised in polygamy. That's when I learned that there are many different groups. I also learned some of the steps it would take for her to get baptized. 4. Creepy cousin who tried to brainwash me into being his wife. He admires Warren Jeffs. He now lives in Mexico and finds ways to send me pictures from whatever group he belongs to even though I have blocked him. His group has Christ in the name but that's all I remember. 5. The next one that has been of significance. I have known random people like at institute or whatever. I have a friend who was excommunicated from her group, the Allred group. I talk with her frequently and recently asked her some questions about her experiences. It's interesting talking to her. She has never been baptized LDS and yet tries to tell me about my temples. That's interesting. It is definitely interesting learning from her. Talking to her about how some of the extreme views you share that the FLDS taught were things my grandparents learned but the current generations are letting go of, whereas the FLDS and similar are keeping alive. Anyway, I find it fascinating to hear the different things. You and the other commenters probably really don't care but I felt compelled to say it all. Maybe it was for me in some way.

Question: I’ve followed many LDS “influencers” over the years and they do have strong families and values, but I’ve always unfollowed them because they are extremely materialistic, consumeristic, and are trying to “sell their lives” with links, links, links. (Fast fashion, all the latest trends, and buying all the things). And they’re very successful. I’ve noticed it across the board and have always wondered how they can not feel guilty about their negative impact on the world. Thoughts? Also, I’d love to see a video about how many LDS people participate in MLMs and how so many are founded by LDS! For both of those topics, the LDS (at least the ones I’ve seen online) seem obsessed with money and material things. I’d love your thoughts!
@maryanne.sanders3 жыл бұрын
And to follow that up, does the church leadership encourage that behavior?
@kaylahall12192 жыл бұрын
Ok, I think I can answer at least one of these questions. MLMs ! If you are committed to staying home with your children, how do you make money? We believe in being industrious, and I think that is a trait shared by all Joseph Smith church offshoots. Valuing industry. Maximizing your talents and potential. Combine that with a little naïveté, and you have a good breeding ground for MLM. I would also say a good culture for “direct sales” that may or may not have MLM structure as part of their business model. That being said, it would be interesting to see how many stay at home Christian mothers turn to MLMs; aside from just LDS mothers era. 🤔 As far as materialism goes, I don’t know so much that it is a cause for success, or if it is a side effect of success. I would say it is not encouraged. Simplicity is encouraged. As an active LDS, I would say that wealth can be as much a burden or trial as poverty.
@spacekermit10182 жыл бұрын
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I agree with your observation, but I think it's mainly a cultural thing that developed. I find MLMs disturbing as well because it's reminds me of the "priest craft," that is actually condemned by the ancient prophets in the Book of Mormon. Some members probably don't agree with me on that. But to clarify preistcraft is what the Book of a Mormon refers to as people that spread certain philosophies or religions to make money and get accolades--even when they know what they are touting is a lie. They put themselves on a pedestal and sell a new lifestyle. So they tend to say what people want to hear and then ask for money and prestige. I didn't notice the trend you are talking about till I moved to Utah, but I guess it's like the Ancient Israelites being drawn to Idol worship. Just because they have been told by God not to do it doesn't mean they won't. Also I think it might be because some people get focused on the worldly blessings that come easier when you are taught to be industrious and educated. That too is ironic because one of the main lessons in the Book Of Mormon aside from Christ visiting the American continent is a pride cycle where the people of the church are blessed because they live Gods laws and then they become rich and then they become prideful and scornful of the poor and then they start being exclusionary and then they stop being righteous and end up losing their wealth. But I think a lot of these MLM people are probably fraudulent in many ways. I think sometimes being LDS I take for granted that people in my church will be kind and generous and not praying upon me. But when a lady with all the fancy things tries to be my friend so she can sell me overpriced crap I can't afford, I have a hard time not being offended. So I refuse to engage in those kinds of ways of making money if I can help it. To be fair some Mormons have big families so it takes a lot to feed them so they have to be creative sometimes and maybe they can justify peddling nonsense on the internet.

How did they reconcile Christ's words with believing in marriage after death? Matthew 22:23 On the same day there came to him the Sadducees, who say that there is no coming back from the dead: and they put a question to him, saying, 24 Master, Moses said, If a man, at the time of his death, has no children, let his brother take his wife, and get a family for his brother; 25 Now there were among us seven brothers; and the first was married and at his death, having no seed, gave his wife to his brother; 26 In the same way the second and the third, up to the seventh. 27 And last of all the woman came to her end. 28 When they come back from the dead, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? because they all had her. 29 But Jesus said to them in answer, You are in error, not having knowledge of the Writings, or of the power of God. 30 For when they come back from the dead there are no husbands and wives, but they are as the angels in heaven.

They are considered mix orientation marriages, they can not be married in the temple, which all LDS strive to be. However they are recognised by the church, just not as “good” as a temple marriage. It would take some time before they would be would be able to get a temple recommend, which would be required to have a temple sealing.

What I learned in history class is that the early Morman church basically traded polygamy for Utah's statehood. The US gov wasn't down with polygamy, and by switching to monogamy they became more palatable to the US gov, I guess. What's the LDS and FLDS's takes on that bit of history?
@pszczolka803 жыл бұрын
I'd expect that the FLDS' take on it should be quite simple: that's probably at least part of the justification for the FLDS splitting and following a new prophet. It takes a lot of balls to doubt the word of a prophet (or to believe one over another), if you genuinely believe they are supposed to be conveying the word of God, but if the 2nd prophet can point to that type of evidence that the 1st prophet has been "corrupted by earthly considerations", it gives them much more of a leg to stand on. I would definitely be curious to know how the mainstream LDS deals with it, though.
@spacekermit10182 жыл бұрын
@@pszczolka80 As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and what I've studied and read about my churches history I would say God told them to end the practice for more than just that reason alone. I know the statehood thing happened, but I think another part of it was keeping their temples open. They had the goal of spreading the restored gospel throughout the world and if the government shuts you down you can't keep building temples and doing ordinances for the dead--baptism and sealings and endowments. I think you aren't wrong but it was more than just wanting statehood. What's interesting is the scriptures of the LDS church is that the Book of Mormon only mentions monogamy and there is a specific instance where the Book of Mormon people are told to stop cheating on their wives. The practice of polygamy was revealed to Joseph Smith in a revelation and is published in the Doctrine and Covenants. The story goes that Joseph Smith wanted to know why Abraham was allowed to have more than one wife, because it was considered wrong by his standards at the time. So he prayed for revelation and was told that when God needs it to be practiced for his own purposes that it is commanded. So because Abraham was supposed to have offspring that would become mighty nations God wanted him to have more than one wife. Then Joseph Smith was commanded to start practicing it, and he didn't really want to so he drug his feet and did it kind of secretly. It's controversial for sure. I don't know anything about FLDS. But it confuses me to see how much the practices of the two church's vary if they have the same set of scriptures and I wonder if they have a different version of the history.

I went on eBay and bought this book called "Jesus Christ's Message to All Nations" written by Warren Jeff's. I bought it to see what he would have to say from his prison cell. I noticed that each sentence is numbered as a verse in the Bible would be. It is also the wording and sentence structure is so odd and at times hard to follow. Would this book be considered scripture in the FLDS?

Yes, anything the prophet says is believed to be direct word from God, and can be considered scripture.

One very important thing to know is that the King James Bible that the LDS and flds read had been altered about 10% of the Bible. So that makes Jesus dying on the cross for our sins so that we can go to heaven null and void. Very important to not purchase a Bible from the LDS flds bookstores

Im not sure what had happened but we were stuck in a town once with time to kill and saw a 'Christian' book store. My sisters and i love to read and thought we would buy a book or 2. We didn't recognize any of the authors. Took us a bit to realize it was an LDS book store!! We walked out and looked at the sign again. Sure enough! We had zoned in to the Christian part and not the rest!! We had no idea that they had separate book stores!! But now we do!!

I'm also curious about this! Maybe this is too far down the rabbit hole, but are kids sealed to their parents or are parents sealed to their kids? If a family is broken up, are they unsealed? If a patriarch is excommunicated (I assume they aren't going to heaven then?) Do the moms with their kids still get to progress to heaven?
@spacekermit10182 жыл бұрын
No. Just plural wives. Not plural husbands. So a man can be sealed to a second wife, but a woman cannot without divorcing her first husband. A woman can't have two husbands. I used to think this was unfair, but now that I have one husband I'm totally ok with not having more! Lol!

Have any LDS or FLDS prophets fallen and been removed?
@GrowingUpinPolygamy3 жыл бұрын
Not really because any time that a group of people think that a prophet has fallen, that group normally assigns a new prophet and becomes their own group by splitting from the church.

I am interested in understanding how FLDS can put so much stock into a another single man as an infallible prophet, when man is clearly fallible by nature. Isn’t that the main reason the Centennial Park group split from the group who became FLDS before FLDS was known by that name… because CP believes in having a counsel vs single-man rule? I also don’t quite understand how a new prophet is determined after the current one dies. Because many people can claim God is speaking to them. It’s just a matter of who the group believes it is happening to. 🤷🏼♀️

Is the Book Of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covanants the same version for the FLDS as the LDS? I'm LDS so I just wonder how the FLDS apply the chapters in the Book Of Mormon where the Nephites are told to only have one wife because the men were breaking their wives hearts by having concubines. My understanding of the LDS church is that we believe polygamy as a circumstantial sort of practice and not a general rule for everyone, as in when it's necessary for Gods purposes it is commanded for some by God to practice it, but not as a general rule for everyone. So when Abraham took Sarah's servant Hagar as a wife he wasn't breaking any of Gods laws because God commanded it. Is that the case for the FLDS? Do they think all marriages should be polygamous or just a select few who are supposed to have many descendants?

I have a question that I've always wondered about the Book of Mormon/Bible thing - why are they two separate books (in the sense of the physical document, as I know that sections within the Bible are also referred to as "books")? If the LDS saw the BoM as another testament of Jesus, why did they not incorporate it as an additional book into their own version of the Bible, making one comprehensive document like the Christians did with the old and new testaments? I'm interesting to know if anyone knows the thinking on this, or do Mormons just not question it and therefore it's never been answered? Additionally, if it's the sort of thing that has simply never been dealt with by the LDS church, I'm curious to to know, from the perspective of you or any other ex-Mormons in the comments, whether having the church saying that the BoM is a testament of Jesus but treating it as separate (and perhaps by extension lesser) to the established testaments played any role in the doubts that eventually lead to your leaving?
@wanderandwonder1213 жыл бұрын
As far as I am aware, LDS believe that only the Book of Mormon is inerrant and that the Bible has been corrupted (as a result of their beliefs about translations). So if there is disagreement between them, they refer to the Book of Mormon over the Bible, which may be why they treat them separately. I think they do sell a single physical book which contains the four "books" which make up their scriptural canon: Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Bible. I have heard they only use the New Testament and refer to that as the "Bible" but I am not sure to what extent that is accurate. Another difference is that the Christian Bible (Old and New Testaments, sometimes with Apocrypha) is more like a compilation of different types of literature (poems, histories, proverbs, letters) from many authors across the centuries which together reveals one unified story about God and creation, hence one book with separate "books" inside. I think that LDS believe the Book of Mormon was written by several prophets in the Americas and lost, but then was perfectly and miraculously found and translated into English by Joseph Smith in the 1820s from gold plates which only he and a few others saw.
@pszczolka803 жыл бұрын
@@wanderandwonder121 OK, I had no idea that they consider the Bible not to necessarily be the ultimate authority - you're right, that could well have something to do with it. Very interesting, thank you.

Sometimes they do put them all in one physical book and they call it a Quadruple Combination because it has all the scriptures in one and it's HUGE! It has the King James Version of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. The Doctrine and Covenants is full of modern revelation that mostly came from Joseph Smiths time. The Pearl of Great Price has revelations where Joseph Smith wrote the account of a Book of Moses and a Book of Abraham. The origins of those are complicated. Look it up if you want to know where they came from because it's kind of a weird story to me.
