You can borrow the home canning machine to can food you get from anywhere. It is available to everyone. If you are not a member of the LDS church you will need to work with a local member who will check out the machine and will be more then glad to help you. We canned apple slices, whole grain cereal, sugar, hot cocoa mix, diced carrots, rice and variety of beans. It is quick and easy. Get all the cans and supplies from the LDS cannery near you. Not all canneries have this machine so please check with them.

That what everyone said in NYC. "There'll never be a hurricane here. There's no need to store water or food." I don't see how having food and water on hand can traumatize people. Not having it when needed would certainly do that.

Actually the producers of Doomsday Preppers has contacted me for the past three years to be on their show. I am not interesting it doing that at all. I prepare for possible job loss, hurricane, economic collapse. Really I am preparing so if I need the food I have it. Just like I wear a seat belt in the car. I don't know when I will need it but I'm sure I will be glad that I have it on when I do need it.

Thanks for posting this video. Ignore the people making sarcastic comments. People seem to have a bad opinion when it comes to putting for by, as some might call it, but they seem to forget that every home put away food from thier gardens, or meat they'd raised themselves at one time. It doesn't matter why a person does this just that they do. I live in lower Alabama and when hurricane Michael came through the panhandle of Fla the evacuees came north. Our little town wasn't in the path of the storm, but we had a surge of extra people that cause our local Dept stores, grocery stores, etc to struggle with the demand for food, etc. Luckily, my family had food and other supplies that saw us through that. Again, thank you for posting this video.

So do we. We have lots of mason jars. This way of canning is for items that will be stored for a few years and then used. We will open a can and either use out of the large can or put the ingredients in mason jars. This cuts the cost of having to buy mason jars for everything we store. Since mason jars are reusable we don't need everything stored in mason jars.

I've done this! I had dehydrated all kinds of foods and wanted to can some for storage. I bought some Tang and CountryTime and canned those. I borrowed the canner from the LDS cannery. I was lucky enough, that I happened to borrow it over a holiday weekend and they let me have it for four days. On one occasion, I took some items for just two cans to the cannery and the people there helped me can those 2 cans on the spot! I was amazed. We were done in less than 5 minutes!

@rhosteph Contact your local LDS cannery in order to reserve it. If you are not LDS you may need to ask if you can join someone who has reserved it. Most LDS are more than glad to have you over and help you with your canning as you help them with theirs. Some foods are cheaper at Sams or especially Costco. You need to do your local price comparisons. The advantage of home canning like this is you can can anything you want. At the LDS cannery you can only can what they sell.

Your local LDS cannery should sell them, if not, look for them at your local big box store that still sell things out of the bins(selling them buy the pound). I use them in soups mostly. To soften them back up (rehydrate them) all you need to do is soak them in hot water. Then you can use them in anything you would use cooked carrots in.
