My father had a Renault 5 from 1974 (yes, the very first version!) until 1992. Almost 20 years of loyal everyday service with no complains at all. When we bought our new Renault 19, we gave the R-5 to a relative who used it for countryside rides and it lasted five more years even with no regular mainteinance. I really miss it!

I bought one of these for 50 bucks and painted it up all cool with stripes and a number. Made it to the Alberta badlands and back through a snowstorm. Ran out of fuel on Jasper Ave....took a bus to get a can of gas....pumped the shit out of the pedal to get her goin again and a hose popped off. The LeCar caught on fire. I ran into a restaurant screaming "She's gonna blow!" Firetrucks showed up and doused the fire but the end result was only charred remains. Best money I ever spent.

My 78 was a blast to drive. It had a high (for the time) compression ratio-10.5 to 1,and required leaded gas. I tried "gasohol" known today as E10,and it spark knocked and dieseled terribly. They lowered the compression in 1980 to accommodate unleaded gas. I traded mine in because I knew it could not live long on bad gas. 55 thousand trouble free miles until then..

Loved my 5. Had a 78. Had the little hood scoop on the back of the hood. In a traffic jam I could put it in neutral, open the door, and push it like a skateboard. Easy to work on the engine. Park it anywhere on the sub base. : )

I still drive mine 1981 4 doors Canadian version today with 228 k on it. Fighting/preventing rust is the biggest issue, otherwise it is so much more personable than the contemporary disposable pieces of sh..t sold by car manufacturers today.

A friend of mine just sent me this. I did this commercial thirty years ago. The original commercial was a duel between La Car and Renault in San Francisco. Remy Julienne drove the Renault and I drove the La Car. We both drove the same locations one after another. I surprise him, after he did his jump about three feet off the ground, I brought in a kick ramp and did mine. I was filmed by a French crew and his sons were his team. Remy was a total class act, it was an honor the work with him. Craig

Does anybody advice on it's not a LeCar instead an European Renault 5? Look at the front lights and bumper, and compare to LeCar. Also why is plated with similar to Spanish cars those years: large rectangle white and black numbers? Funny to see nowadays.

Wow, you have NO idea wat you say. Its a legend, the first ( introduced in 1974 ) modern hatchback, ellegant, populair, comfortable, and its a Renault so its cool. Those days if you want a smal car you have to go to Austin ( old people and brake downs ) VW beetle with terrible traction and unpopulair by 1974, noisy and slow Fiat 127 ( but they were cool to ) Not to mention the turbo versions of the 5. Appart for the bad quality steel the car was GREAT.

I had two of them about 25 years ago. I remember changing the spark plugs and just by leaning on the fender it would dent. Very thin metal, scary thin. The ride was surprising, you had the impression of driving a much larger car. Oh and a landing like in the add? The car would have bent for shure.
@pascalcs16 жыл бұрын
I had two of these, a 1977 "real US version" of Le Car (different from that in the video) and a 1981 4 doors, Canadian version bought new in Montreal. I sold the first one after 70 000 miles with tears in my eyes. I still drive the second one today with 223 000 km on it. Original engine, clutch and struts... I had to fight rust just above the back wheels. A wonderfull automobile way ahead of its time then.

My guess is they destroyed 5 or 6 Le Cars making this commercial. Sharp turns, doing over 40 mp and a couple of days in the salty SF air would have claimed at least 2 or 3. Every one of the jumps represents a totaled Le Car also, so there was at least 2 or 3 more consumed that way. If any were parked on a SF incline between takes then certainly 1 or 2 were lost from that as well.
