Ickx was last after the initial start because he slowly walked to his car. He won the race that year.

It's funny because he won the race only 80 feet in front of the Porsche. Best start and best finish ever.

and he also had a crash with his private 911 when he was driving home.....

I feel like this illustrates "slow and steady wins the race" much more than The Tortoise and the Hare.

Actually it is not Woolfe`s car burning, it is Chris Amon`s Ferrari. Woolfe`s Porsche crashed into barriers and Woolfe was thrown out of his car (his belts were not fasten) and hit the ground heavily. He died later due the internal injuries. Amon`s Ferrari hit the fuel tank of the destroyed Porsche and burst into flames. Amon escaped with minor injuries.

so many of us pine for the old days of auto racing, but some of the rules and methods were kind of insane, little wonder that people like Jackie Stewart started ranting about driver safety when he did

He was way out of his league. Should never have been at the wheel of the 917. Add that he was not strapped in.... stupid. The start back then was a running start and so many drivers ran to the car hopped in fired up and took off... doors not even fully closed sometimes and then they would gradually strap themselves in at 180 MPH. Crazy. He was warned by experienced drivers to not drive the 917.

"Woolfe was killed, probably due the fact that he had not bothered to put on his safety belt" The car literally exploded... All the safety belt would have done was melt into Woolfe due to the flames that is, if he wasn't already dead from the impact
