I love these back ground stories. I still have my Toy Corgi car 917 in blue and one in red from the early 1970s. Mark in Milwaukee 🍻🇺🇸

The greatest generation of engineers, Norbert Singer, Hans Mezger, who designed and built the greatest car ever made which was driven by the greatest drivers, Dr. Helmut Marko and Jonkheer Gijs van Lennep who set a distance record in it in 1971 which stood for over four decades. The great Pedro Rodriguez won the 1970 Brands Hatch 1000km by an astonishing five laps in a 917K despite being penalised by one lap for missing a yellow flag during the race.

The development of the 917 brakes was so important to its eventual success. Did the 917-053 race in the 1971 Le Mans with the 1970 specification or 1971 (drilled) specification discs? Die Entwicklung der 917-Bremsen war so wichtig für den späteren Erfolg. Fuhr der 917-053 in Le Mans 1971 mit der Spezifikation von 1970 oder 1971 (gebohrten) Spezifikationsscheiben?
@kyle_c936 Жыл бұрын
It had the drilled discs (you might know Porsche called them 'Gruyère' discs, after the holey Swiss cheese) and the discs actually cracked on 917-053 around the holes towards the end of the race. Bringing it in for a disc and pad change would have handed the win to the JW-Gulf 917 running second, two laps down, but since the teams had declared a truce by then (the two 917s were running nose-to-tail with the third-placed Ferrari a long, long way behind), Marko and Van Lennep were able to keep going by braking carefully enough (and eventually hardly even braking at all!) to hold out for the win, their final lap times being around 15 seconds a lap slower than their grid time.

It would be nice if the Panamera continued to be produced and only two other versions of the sedan were made. The design is too few in number. Instead of replacing it with a hardtop convertible, I would like to make it separately.
