As a car guy who has been in PCA since about 1984, owned seven different street Porsches (still have one), done various types of road racing, I always consider "Le Mans" to be the greatest racing movie of all time. To me it captures the true spirit and feel of racing. Like you say, this would be the ultimate car to own, as a Porsche fan and collector.

Fun story, I was moonlighting for a Imsa team in the 96/7 season. At one of these races Paul Newman was driving one of the Panoz cars. Right before the race was to start their car was gridded right next to ours and a conversation about cars fired up and Paul asked me what my all time favorite car was. When I had answered the Porsche 917 you want to talk about a mans eyes light up. Then one quick story after another there was a gathering of 60+ drivers & crew everyone laughing and such , the officials said to Paul we had to get started because the network was televising the event. He bluntly told the to hold their horses because he had a story to finish and took him another 20 minutes to do so. What a legend.

It’s been an incredible journey not just knowing this legendary 917, but also having the privilege to work on it and drive it on the track. Few examples boast a fully documented history, a first-class restoration, and the sheer presence of this one. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for this true icon!

I watched the 917s at Watkins Glen raced in anger and it was a mezmerizing experience. The unique sound of that magnificent flat 12 at full throttle and decelerating will never be duplicated. In the rain they slithered up through the esses struggling mightily for grip. And fast! From recollection, I do not think they were easy to drive because Porsche engineers deliberately made a "mouse trap" style accelerator petal--either all off or all on, reasoning that it made the cars produce faster lap times. It also made being a spectator a cardiovascular workout--fearing for the car and drivers on occasion as the back end broke loose at speed. Can't wait to see what frenzy about this Steve McQueen car generates at sale. There is and always will be, only one. Porsche, you should buy this car.

He alluded to having it long enough and now it was someone else's turn. I believe I heard him earlier say it it was a process to use. The difference between a Ferrari GTO and a 917 is one you can have on the battery charger, disconnect it and go for a drive. The other you need a team, trailer, transporter and a track to go to.

This car (chassis 022) was actually ordered by McQueen and used by him in filming Le Mans, and it was also once owned by Redman. I think it could go for $20,000,000.

Be very careful when throwing around blanket statements such as this is the greatest livery ever put on a race car. That is a VERY Porsche owners way of thinking (and behaving). It really gets old hearing Porsche enthusiasts self-aggrandizing insistence that there is the Porsche way... and ONLY the Porsche way. The John Player Special that adorned the Lotus 7 series F1 cars and the Marlboro livery on Senna's MP4/4 are pretty much cemented in the Livery hall of fame and the Alitalia livery that festooned the Lancia Stratos in 1976 is so memorable as to be inseparable from the actual Stratos car. An argument can even be made for Richard Petty's #43 STP livery as well as Martini liveries on both Porsche's and Lancia's during the 70's, 80's and 90's. The Audi Quattro WRC factory livery as well as Subaru's iconic blue and gold WRC livery are also in the running. The Porsche Gulf livery is iconic and a wonderful livery, but is it the most important in motoring history? Is it "the best" ever? That depends upon what motorsports you follow and the drivers you were a fan of. Personally, I am a fan of Jean Ragnotti and the Renault R5 Turbo so his 1981 WRC Monte Carlo winning R5 Turbo in it's classic yellow and black Renault Sport livery is my "greatest ever". Hopefully Porsche fans can begin to reach out and educate themselves a bit. There are other makes and models with incredible back stories and equally unique engineering that are also worth spending time behind the wheel.

Not knocking the 917, truly one of the greatest race cars of all time, but Sam jumps from Ferrari to Porsche, completely skipping over Ford as if it was Porsche who dethroned Ferrari. He also states that the 917 was somehow the unadulterated high point of endurance racers which to me seems naive given Ford’s development of the GT Mk IV (GT40 Mk II as well) was at a minimum equally as focused on creating the greatest endurance racer, and was done so without the hindrance of the engine size limits introduced by the FIA to make the 7 liter Fords obsolete. Perhaps it’s the Fords that are truly the “unadulterated” design.

The only car better is the GT 40. Okay the McLaren F1. is truly awesome. LeMans is hands down the greatest film about racing, Grand Prix, with James Garner is second. At least that’s my opinion. Watch LeMans with the sound going through a thousand watts on level six, going through 500 plus watt speakers and you will know why.

How and why does Chris Jacobs still get work...please stop employing this gas bag. Also love they used some guy who mispronounced Porsche...this is one of the seminal 917 racing cars and you got some dork pronouncing the brand wrong!!! Good job Dana!

That's the thing about the heads that run Le Mans. They'll change the rules to accommodate a European car. They did it to Ford, and they did it to Mazda. So what's the big attraction to German cars? I'll take a Ford GT 40 over any Glorified over priced VW.

Lol. The 1966 "Ford GT40" was in reality the British Lola Mk6 with the word "Ford" stuck on it, because Ford was writing the checks. The team was British, run out if Eric Broadley's shop in Slough England, Driver Ken Miles was British, even the Ford engines were built in Britain using British parts. To put things in context, Ford has won Le Mans four times using British Lolas, Toyota has won five times using Toyotas, Ferrari has won ten times using Ferraris, and Porsche OWNS Le Mans with NINETEEN wins using Porsches.

I predict 2.5 million. Production cars like the Ferrari have gone for close to 20 million but this is more of a novelty car awesome as it is.

I'm sure it will sell well over 20 million dollars....well over...

A similar 917K sold for $14 million in 2017. Lesser 917s have sold privately for between $10 million and $15 million.

I work on high end cars every day and certainly can appreciate those machines and their tech. 2 huge issues in my book with Porsche is... #1 - Ferdinand had a very close relationship with Adolf Hitler and collaborated with the Nazi regime. He joined the Nazi Party in 1937 and became a member of the SS. He also designed military vehicles and used the Volkswagen factory to produce armaments during World War II. #2 - Don't matter how you dress one up... It's STILL a girls car!

The LeMan movie was pretty boring. Steve was making up the script each day and he never had an overall plan for the movie. The scenes were great though.

the plan of the movie was to let the world see what only a few could see in person
