Salutations, Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I’ll be discussing a beautiful knife from France; the Le Thiers.
The Le Thiers is a rather compelling pattern. Unlike most regional French knives, it is relatively new-having been designed in 1994 by a guild of knifemakers in Thiers who set out with the goal of creating a unique pattern for their city, Thiers; the knife capitol of France. This guild is still very much active today and holds the exclusive right to allow the production and marketing of Le Thiers knives. Another way the Le Thiers differs from other French knife patterns is that it’s a legally protected design. To produce an authentic Le Thiers, a maker must meet a certain set of prerequisites beforehand. This list includes the following requirements:
-The maker must be based in, or around Thiers.
-The maker must have at least 5 years of experience in the trade.
-The maker’s design must be approved and endorsed by the guild.
-The materials used in the knife’s production must be of good quality and locally sourced.
-The construction of the knife must be done in, or near Thiers.
-The knife must feature the words “Le Thiers Par (maker’s or firm’s name)”
These prerequisites help to prevent any imitations from arising and also ensure that each Le Thiers knife is of sufficient quality.
This particular model is by Coutellerie Au Sabot-a firm I discussed a few months ago. Coutellerie Au Sabot is based just a few minutes outside of Thiers, thus allowing them to produce an authentic Le Thiers knife that is approved by the guild. This model features some lovely black horn handles, which create a very striking appearance to an already chic knife!
Le Thiers Knife Par Le Sabot:
-12c27 Sandvik stainless steel drop-point blade.
-forged stainless steel bolsters.
-stainless steel pins, liners and spring.
-black horn handles.
-5/10 pull weight.
-handmade in France. 🇨🇵
Overall, the Le Thiers is an immensely influential design among French knives. Despite not being nearly as old as the majority of traditional French regional patterns, the Le Thiers shows that the spirit of knifemaking is alive and well in France. Coutellerie Au Sabot has done a brilliant job at crafting this pattern in a way that has resulted in a knife that is both elegant and luxurious, while also being simple and affordable. All in all, I am extremely pleased with it!
