Le Train des Pignes 2015

A video filmed on 6th.September 2015 on the metre gauge Chemin de Fer de Provence line featuring 1923 built Mallet no.E211. The train operates during the summer months between Puget - Theniers and Annot and the video sees the train at various locations on both the outward and return journeys. Thanks to the G.E.C.P. association who operate the steam trains over the line and special thanks to my wife Pam for the pacing shots.

Sir,Sorry I had to miss the best W&L Gala for years. Was there for a few days just before and after. With two others, I strimmed and cleared Heniarth for the Photogs/videoers. Then after Gala had a brilliant trip up the Golfa in all its autumn glory with 822. Fireman had trouble with his sticky injector, but it didn't spoil the trip. We had good weather for it. Next up in October. Your NYMR video blew me away!

What a wonderful film, especially the fascinating pacing shots by Pam. I don't usually go for the foreign stuff, but we have it at Llanfair, but not a Mallet! And for something completely different! But the quality is still the same. Thank you both very much.

Eine Fahrt mit dem train de pignes ist auch 2022 ein unvergessliches Erlebnis. Die Strecke entlang des Var ist wunderschön, abwechslungsreich und einfach ideal für eine Schmalspurbahn. Enge Kurven, Steigungen und Gefälle sowie architektonisch elegante und auch gewagte "Kunstbauten" im steten Wechsel-man weiß gar nicht mehr wo und wie man aus dem Staunen herauskommen will. Allerdings ist eine Mitfahrt auf Lok E211, einer echten Verbund-Mallet von 1923 das Himmelreich für einen Eisenbahn -fan. Diese Lok war damals zweifellos das Beste, was Dampftechnik hergab: zwei unabhängige Triebwerke mit unterschiedlicher Achsfolge und gelenkig geführt. Zwei unterschiedlich große Zylinderpaare , wo der im sehr verdampfungsfreudigen Kessel gewonnene Dampf sich zweimal(!) entspannen kann. Das Ganze gefeuert mit bester polnischer Kohle, wovon der/oder die beiden Heizer gar nicht genug durch die große Feuertür schaufeln können. Diese Tür wird vom 2.Heizer wie ein sich nach beiden Seiten öffnender Vorhang von behandschuhter Hand aufgerissen-weiß glühendes Feuer sendet eine ungeahnte Hitzewelle durchs gar nicht mal so enge Führerhaus, während der Lokführer auf die zwei Wasserstandgläser deutet-"Nachfüllen tut not...!" Mein GPS geht auf 40 km/h zu -und das bergauf, mit einem gar nicht gerade kleinen Zug--alles rüttelt und tobt ,Dampf-Fahnen kommen auch mal ins Führerhaus - und da geht das vordere Triebwerk durch!- Der Lokführer knallt den Regler zu und gleich wieder auf. Das Manometer springt über die 12, die zweite Hand-ändert die Füllung--und schon hat dieser Lokführer die Maschine wieder im Griff ...Es ist einfach herrlich. Und einfach unvergesslich, das zu erleben..! Diese Maschine lebt.,und das Lokpersonal kämpft..und liebt doch die Maschine innig. Ölverschmierte Gesichter strahlen! Ich war Flieger-aber diese Maschine und Ihre Mannschaft auf dieser bestens gepflegten Strecke-und das in so einer Landschaft, dagegen ist auch anspruchvolles viermotoriges Fluggerät am schönsten Himmel fast schon langweilig ! That was a truly beautiful production, Austin. The pacing shots were astounding (as was the driving which I presume was being done by yourself). You have also somehow managed to capture the nonchalance of the French with the shots of the railway staff just doing their thing. I loved it - thank you Austin. Thanks very much Frank, Pam did well with the pacing shots I think, I was driving and hoping that I was at the right spot for her to get the shots. I cut quite a dash in my blue and white striped jumper and beret with the accordion if I say so myself!

Thank you very much Geoff, yes those lamps are beautiful and are huge when you get up close to them. The music came from a little Provencal band that comes to a local market where we were staying so I took the opportunity to record a couple of tracks.

We have been on this line, 2002, from Nice to Entrevaux, return. We travelled by rail motor. Lovely views, and quite quirky as the train snakes through the suburbs of Nice.

Lovely video, Austin. Strangely I was in the area at the beginning of September staying at Antibes for a few days before moving on to Italy. My wife wants to go back there so I will keep this little gem in mind. Keith

Thanks Keith, I love Antibes, had two holidays there some years back. This train runs every Sunday through the summer months. The starting station is around 40 miles from Nice up in the hills

Austin, wouldn't mind being there for a few days, the loco has an unusual wheel arrangement, most probably the back wheel is just there to support the coal tender

Thank you, yes I was the driver. It's an awkward stretch of road where no overtaking is allowed for a mile or two so you can't really go slow because of following cars
