In my experience, there's no way a neurotypical can NOT be abusive to a person on the Spectrum. Even parents of deeply affected Autism children have reacted and behaved atrocious when either the didn't know, or DID know I was on the Spectrum. Always be on guard for your own mental health.
@deliciouscolours4 ай бұрын
Married to a man with Autism for almost 19 years here. I'm absolutely not abusive to my husband, what I am also not is God, a perfect being that has infinite patience and strentgth. I am human too, I get overwhelmed and drained too. People on the spectrum cannot expect infinite perfection from neurotypicals. It took a while but my husband and I adjusted, we started focusing on what each other brought to the marriage instead of what the other couldn't bring and we are happy.
@deadean18913 ай бұрын
I feel sorry that you went through this but in no way is your experience a fact in reality and it is a big stretch in logic to go from people being mean to neurotypicals never being able to not be abusive to neurodivergent people. People are people neurotypical or not, and both make mistakes, leaps in judgements, and can be mean and abusive. I'm neurodivervent, and so is my husband. My family was horrible to me since I was little too but I have still met a lot of people who WILL be patient and understanding to everybody especially those who are on the spectrum. His family was not abusive to him but still couldn't understand him which made him feel neglected when in fact him not knowing how to communicate or show his needs was why he felt neglected. People just didn't know because he didn't exhibit any cues they could read. I hope you find somebody who's as understanding and accepting of both your shortcomings and virtues and I hope you can accept theirs. A positive outlook with a hint of "you don't define me" can give you the strength to push through the pain and heal. I also hope your family changes into better people.
@deadean18913 ай бұрын
But you do have a point in the sense that my husband understands me better than a neurotypical person would and I could read my husbands cues unlike his family. This has allowed him to feel safe and heard and loved and eventually he started changing for the better. Sometimes neurodivergent people will work better as a couple with other neurodivergent people and neurotypicals will feel hurt by neurodivergents just being themsleves because they have needs that go unfulfilled no matter how much they love them. Autistic people can't always show love in the indirect not-specifically requested way neurotypicals may crave. It can make neurotypicals quite insecure. That's not to say those relationships don't work, just that they're hard. But all good things are worth the effort.
@ysgramornorris2452Ай бұрын
In my experience, there's no way anyone can be with someone else and always avoid hurting them. Autism has nothing to do with it. Put two people together, one of them's gonna say something that the other is gonna take the wrong way. The trick is to be able to recognize when it happens, apologize, forgive and move on.

Both need to know the differences of each other and sometimes give time to each other. The only thing I know is if they really love each other they should be together.
