You dont touch someone during a melt down, my friends did it once and I punched them. You cant help it, you dont process it, if you need to get between them in order to stop them hurting themselves (like in this clip) you need to calm them down, give them something different otherwise you put yourself at risk and doing more could make them worse. Especially if theyre on the spectrum, hypo sensitivity is a very common thing and being touched can make things alot worse.

I know that it's not as pure as Shaun, but I know that my colleagues appreciate for I do, despite my diseases. I don't think he's really shocked Shaun slapped him - I think he's in shock because a lot just happened but he's not surprised. I think Glassman is scared for Shaun but also upset at himself in that moment because he knows Shaun well enough to know grabbing him would've added to his sensory overload (and triggered past trauma), setting him off more. He knows when Shaun is distressed he needs less sensory stimuli to calm down not more, and grabbing him like that only added to his overwhelm (especially considering Shaun rarely likes being touched at the best of times) which is why it was such a bad move. But Glassman acted without thinking because he was also highly emotional, consequently responding to Shaun's distress in a way that sent him over the edge... causing a messy, public scene in their workplace while colleagues watched on. He's not shocked he got hit, I think he's having an 'Oh no, what've I just done?' moment because while he's not happy with Shaun (for valid reasons), he also feels he failed as a mentor and friend, and he's scared there's no coming back from that slap because their superiors won't believe "Shaun's autism won't get in the way of his work," after Shaun hit another doctor. He's not scared of Shaun, he's scared for him and that's why he's in shock. *that's how I read it anyway
