it's unfair that the choir i wanted to join gave audition pieces that basically caters to a soprano range, and im more leaning towards an alto so it's really hard to hit the higher notes without running out of breath from singing in head voice.

That is partially true, but there are pieces which fit your voice but which is still quite difficult for some to learn to master.
