Man, these are badass. 2 x 600cca's paralleled will start 99% of regular trucks. They typically have room for two batteries.
@mochouinard6 ай бұрын
Now you need to start doing check about how well they are sealed. Maybe use some kind of vacuum pump instead of dumping them into water ;) One thing that would be great, is a battery that you could just put along side a lead battery. What I mean by that, is for example, my friend have a sailboat. Her budget is super limited, and her battery will need to be replaced. But she do have a Diesel Engine that the battery need to be able to start. Her system allow 2 battery, and she have a battery selector that allow to select individual battery, or both batteries. I would love to help her out and get her a LifePo4 battery, but I see multiple problem... First the battery selector, can cause issues, as one battery might be low, while the other one full, so switching to Both battery option, then you have the 2 battery having rush current into them... And with the battery you just shown, if there is no protection at all, it would rush at what... 600amp between the batteries ? This doesn't seem to be a problem with her Lead battery. And can I start safely a Diesel engine from these batteries ?... As for me, I do have a Ecoflow Delta 2, and I do have 48volt battery system. It would be great to have a battery like this to supplement my Delta 2 on the cheap, but the max at 12volt would be 166watt I can input into my Delta 2 from the DC IN port at 13volt. So I'm not sure how useful it would be (and maybe that 166watt have a good % lost in conversion as well...). I could use 2 of these batteries in series and get 2kWh... It just suck that there is empty space inside.

Will, I have to raise the Red Flag here. They are obviously not using High C-Rate LFP cells but just regular Prismatics. Nothing wrong with that, except you exceed the specified C-Rates such as 2C and even 3C discharging. Burst Discharges within spec are OK but not this. It may be prudent to check out the cells specifically, locate that companies spec sheet and take that into consideration. In my opinion, allowing such heavy discharges will have consequences and potentially most unpleasant ones.

@Tumbleweed51506 ай бұрын
The reason to change out a charger for LiFePO4 batteries is that the charger won't get the Voltage high enough. If you have a solar system installed with a LiFePO4 MPPT solar controller, and can get enough sun during the day, that would cover it. All of these kinds of batteries seem to have a passive balancing mode, but one needs to get the battery (bank) up to the highest recommended charging Voltage in order for that to work, which is why chargers for lead-acid don't work very well. If your battery charger is also a Converter, you may need to change it out.

Have you made any DIY batteries lately? Have the prices of individual cells came down enough yet to justify a DYI battery for 12v or 48v systems?
@aprilwine1325 ай бұрын
Love your show I have three off grid dwellings First one still has AGM that have been working well for about 8 years . Second one which is my main dwelling has 4 Relion 300ah in series to give me a 48v system. I pain $3000 each for those batteries 6 years ago. Still going strong, but $12000 for 4 batteries.😞 My third is an rv with Li Time i bought at you recommendation. Great battery and good customer service . So good to see them go down in price! Very gappy to find your channel a couple years ago. Thank you SO much for your channel!

I am building an off grid property just 1 hour outside of Las Vegas on the north end of the town of Pahrump. I am using Lead Acid for my battery bank currently. In the future I do want to add a lithium bank as cost was the factor. But with declining prices we can start entertaining buying 4 of these at a time. Currently I have been adding 4 NAPA HD Lead Acid batteries at a time for 48v on each series. Currently running 3 banks in parallel. Running AC unit, refrigerator and security equipment 24/7. Eventually this system will be expanded to also power our house and shop.

These batteries would be good for a self build rv with ac unit. Like a window unit. No soft start needed.

Hi Will, it looks OK but I’d be real concerned about overcurrent protection. Yeah, I know you could put breakers or fuses in there, but still make me nervous that it could pull so many amps and not shut off.
@KEAWE76 ай бұрын
Wow! That looks like it is a good battery.

Put a big fuse in line and the overcurrent problem is mostly overcome (unless you have a short internal to the battery)

The limitations for LFP are being overcome 👉 low temp, 1C charge rates and discharge rates and capacity. This battery "does not have over-current protection" which is a red flag, but setting low voltage cutout is a workaround. Repeated high discharge will have an impact on reliability, but with perhaps a BMS software change, this issue is easily mitigated. Another simple solution is to buy 2 or 4 and run them on a 24 or 48V system, which then reduces peak current output loading. Great review Will, I hope you can do a deeper dive on BMS programming.

Don't need all that for protection. Any electrician can tell you that an "overcurrent protection device" is usually in the form of the correct Amp and Voltage rated fuse or breaker. Just get a DC rated breaker that is lower than the maximum current one wants to see. Done deal. LOL

I second that. Electrician here... In-line fuse or breaker for my system.@@Tumbleweed5150

I use lead acid batteries in cold climate of the rocky mountains during hunting season. The FAA and other companies use them for communication/NAV systems on high and cold weather sites because they do not heat the buildings in winter. C&D 2.5 volt cells which we used a total of 48-52 volt systems, are able to run the NAV systems when lines go down for up to a week. Also C&D's last 25 years +. I Like LiFePo4 batteries but lead acids still have a place. The solar charger I have has a conditioning cycle that helps the batteries last longer in my RV.
@davefroman47006 ай бұрын
You ain't seen nothing yet. The cost of cells in China has plummeted over the last 6 months. LFP is down to $56/Kw now. In a year or so from now I bet we see 5kw rack battery prices less than $800

Do you think this battery is an appropriate "drop in" to start Gas vehicles? The high current draw for a few seconds seems to be the only thing keeping LFPs from replacing car batteries.
@chrisreynolds63316 ай бұрын
Vehicle main battery is the one exception where LFP can't be used. Enormous cranking current, plus having a BMS could be disastrous. If the battery becomes full and switches off while driving the alternator output would go unstable and possibly destroy the vehicle electronics. I'm not an electrician so this is only my opinion. For home and leisure use, LFP all the way

@@chrisreynolds6331 I have experience with Alternator "Runaway". There needs to be a "smart" load on the Alternator to prevent it.
@s.mendez71606 ай бұрын
At idle speeds with a stock alternator, you will burn it out. Need a DC/DC converter to buffer and intelligently charge the LFP.
@charlesfalk35166 ай бұрын
Exactly
@chrisreynolds63316 ай бұрын
@@s.mendez7160 Yes I've heard that the DC converter is essential. Apparently without it the LFP will try to take almost infinite charging current

So I watched the first 1:30 sec of this video and had to comment. This is funny and is exactly correct. Why would you still use lead batts. I build my own lifepo4 batts but with manufactures getting the price down it make it harder to resist. My ONLY complaint is not enough information out there about which one is QUALITY Built and true grade A cells. They lie on the product pages and build quality will never be seen if no one opens a glued sealed battery. This is why I really appreciate Will Prowse for taking these apart and showing people whats REALLY inside and if the BMS is quality or not. Thank you Will. Keep up this kind of content as products are always changing in this segment fast.!

Have you measured the current draw on your stabilizer jack? Seems the motor would not come close to drawing what an LFP battery could deliver.

Just a comment about lead acid, 25 years ago I had four (4) 6 volt Trojan golf cart batteries, although beefy, they were disappointing because of the size/capacity ratio and having to water them. Lifpo4 is so much better, no adding water, sustained voltage, longer life, so much lighter.
