I really love the signal phasing here!
I just think for the south side crosswalk (2 stage), the east half should also receive the walk signal during the southbound leading left turn phase, and during the westbound split phase. The west half should receive the walk signal during the northbound lagging left turn phase.
My favorite part of the signal timing here, is that the left turn green arrows flash. I think it looks fancy with 2 flashing left turn green arrows, right next to 2 solid green through arrows! Maybe it could be a way to wake up distracted drivers?
For signal timing:
- Southbound receives a leading left turn phase, followed by a north/south through phase.
- Northbound receives a lagging left turn phase.
- Eastbound and westbound operate as split phasing (first westbound, then eastbound).
- The walk signal comes on automatically each cycle for the east side & west side crosswalks.
- Pushing the button is required to activate the walk signal for the south side crosswalk.
- The southbound leading left turn phase and the northbound lagging left turn phases are callable (can be skipped if there's no vehicles in the left turn lanes.
- Every phase has a 5 second yellow interval.
- The southbound leading left turn phase and northbound lagging left turn phases have a 2 second all red interval.
- There are no all red intervals for the north/south through phase or the east/west split phasing.
Intersection design:
- Northbound and southbound both have one bus lane, three through lanes and two dedicated left turn lanes.
- Eastbound has one through lane, one shared through/left turn lane, and one dedicated left turn lane.
- Westbound has two through lanes, one shared through/left turn lane, and one dedicated left turn lane.
- Right turns are channelized for all directions (yield control for northbound/southbound, and stop sign controlled for eastbound/westbound).
- There are signalized pedestrian crosswalks at the east, west, and south legs of the intersection.
- Pedestrians using the south side crosswalk have a large protected island (Jersey barrier style), which separates the crosswalk into a 2 stage crosswalk.
Trivia:
- The city of Brossard's traffic signal standards don't actually allow green arrows to flash, but some intersections still have them!
- The southbound primary signal was changed from standard to symbolic configuration (diamond yellow and square red lights), between 2012 and 2014!
- The southbound primary signal is currently the only signal at this intersection that has symbolic configuration.
- The secondary eastbound signal on the median used to have symbolic lenses, but was changed to standard configuration in 2018.
- The eastbound left turn signal used to have symbolic lenses, but it was changed to all arrows in 2012. (2 red arrows on each end, 1 yellow arrow, and 1 green arrow). In 2018, it was changed to standard configuration.

Awesome! I love this intersection and the sequence it has. I completely agree with what you said in the description about the 2 stage pedestrian crossing, it would make it much better for pedestrians and considering u turns are prohibited, it would be really ideal!

Omg i can't believe the amount of paved road in that shot. Where do all the things go that aren't cars? Where can the cars eventually stop?

Nice sequence! I’m surprised there is no all-red clearance after the east and west split phase, considering it’s a big intersection. Should be a 2s all-red.

Is it possible to extend the pedestrian phase next to the SB thru phase? I don't like that the pedestrian signal reaches the don't walk phase about 20 seconds before the yellow light for vehicles. The intersection is nice but needs improvement for pedestrians friendliness.

I 100% agree. I don't know how feasible it is, depending on how soon the through signals can turn yellow for the opposing lagging left turn phase. I think it's possible tho. At least if the countdown was increased from 25 to 40 seconds.

@@jacksonbourrettransportati9852 IMO this is the problem with having the countdown start on the walk signal. It becomes impossible to adjust the length of the pedestrian phase. I also agree about the multi-stage crossings. I think with some programming changes they can become much more efficient and pedestrian-friendly. I see that multi-stage crossings are quite common in Longueuil as well.

Were there 2 left turn lanes at the start of the video? I always see the double left turns with protected thru/left signals.

Yes! Each direction has 2 left turn lanes.

Northbound and southbound have 2 dedicated left turn lanes. Eastbound and westbound have one dedicated left turn lane and one shared through/left turn lane.
