You aren't there to like. Your there to kick some ass as commanded by the Platoon Sgt. Leadership is the structure that holds many aspects in life, together. Nuff said. OOOHHHH RAHHHH, SgtMaj!

If you're actually leading your people then in most cases they will like you, along with trust, and respect you.

People WANT to follow a good leader. Trying to lead by positional authority doesn't go far.

Leaders need to lead and lead by example in every aspect of life. With that, those who follow will respect you and back you up in any situation. With that being said, those who follow such great leaders will become great leaders themselves.

I had a platoon sergeant once who just came back from the drill field once. Everyone hated him because he was a hard ass, but he got to know you on a personal level. He knew when to be a SSgt, and he knew when to be a bro. I respected that and I believe we naturally like things we respect.

Leadership is not about liking someone. There are plenty of people I like, but couldn’t lead a group of baby ducks. Leadership is about wisdom, intelligence, strength and respect and lastly love. Love for the Corps, love for your Cadre and most of all the love of your country. I wasn’t well liked by everyone, but I was RESPECTED by everyone. Honesty, Integrity, Commitment and Dedication to my duties were my cornerstones. Semper Fidelis🇺🇸

You get your ability to lead from three places. The first is your rank, organizational power, this is the least effective place to derive your ability to lead people. The second is technical and tactical proficiency, your ability to teach, coach and counsel. To teach people how to do their job, to be successful and to help others be successful. The last place you derive your ability to lead is through your charismatic power. Simple put your ability to lead people by your personality. By being able to effectively communicate with them to link your goals with their goals. To be relatable, it is much easier to communicate people when they want to hear what you are saying instead of you forcing them to hear what you are saying be use if they don’t here comes some NJP. Leaders who rely on their organizational power are the least effective. The ones who can combine all three are the most effective. I can see where you land on that spectrum.

I'm going with the standard answer of "You don't have to like me" response. At the simplest base, if a leader is doing what they are supposed to be doing and what is expected of them (and their position), who gives a damn if they are liked??????? I will say the best leaders I had the privilege to serve under, I ended up liking them in a professional manner. That's my on paper answer!

I had plenty of leaders I didn’t like. It’s impossible to like every NCO and officer you’re doing to serve with. And that’s true of the civilian sector as well. Respected and obeyed it’s what you need… if you’re a bad leader, that WILL sort itself out, and you won’t be leading for long. Semper Fi, SgtMaj! Aurah!!

Meh I was an enlisted 0311 I work for VA atm and have been in management for over 16 years so far. I have Major’s and Lt Colonel’s whom report to me I assure you they are great people but rank has little to do with leadership ability or earned respect. I cannot leave them in charge when I go on PTO unfortunately. You can learn to be a good leader and to be a good manager but not everyone can be both (or either). But make no mistake you must earn respect and if you think yelling or forcing people to do things isn’t going to fly once you take off your bars or chevrons. You must develop these skills so if you want to manage people as a career, you have to use and hone more than a few tools (skills) you can use when you need them.

Personally, I want a little bit of both in my chain of command. Kill hat mentalities have a function, but just because your Corporal has been through so much unbelievable shit in his life that he swore that as a Corporal that he would be the mellow guy.. doaent mean that he is not as valuable to you as your kill hat. Like Easy Company, one trained them all together..then from them, Mr. Winters led them to victory in every battle from the start to the fall of Germany.

Likership. That's called cronyism. The (so called) leaders that choose subordinates that like them to be in their circle. I'm calling bs. Leadership will keep you safe and alive. Likership will kill and dismantle the structure of thr military. Leave it to the damn army.

No Sir i believe in the modified old way yes he's a Sargent Major but Rank isn't everything or anything if it just shines from the outside i am not here to be your friend or for you to like me i am here to teach you how to survive in combat and fight in a way that is conducive of you and your Peers taking the fight to the enemy and shutting down and intent of resistance while looking for a surrender the better part of Valor says don't trust anything but your instincts

Always this side or that side but when you’re able to get good from both and leave the bad behind you learn to be well rounded which in this case is a well rounded leader, your “URAH” mentality makes you want to be just a solid strong leader but someone who takes time to understand what level each person you lead is at is very crucial, not baby one another but it’s a check to see where you’re people stand and identify any soon to be possible weak links in your chain and you as a well rounded leader will strengthen that weak link, but no it’s always this side or that side and shame to weaker one, disappointing to see the very weak minds of the old but ill be there one day

Well said RH. SOLID leadership is key… not everyone “follows” the same way. GREAT leaders recognize that, and are still FIRM and FAIR. SFMF
