Just wanted to give an update on this video (It's a year old but it's been getting pushed by the algorithm a bit lately): Shortly after this video was released, I no longer felt like I could in good conscience lead Bethel songs at my church anymore. I have stopped using Bethel songs in my services since this video was released.

Yes... that clearly is the right call, Spencer. Honestly, after hearing you talk about Bethel's BSSM, the worship practice of "tuning the room" to manipulate/persuade the presence & arrival of the Holy Spirit, their pastoral affirmations of misguided motives behind water baptism, their implementation of a "Give Financially to Get Back Even More" offering concept (thru the concerted, verbal chanting of the congregation), and New Age/Mystic/False Gospel😮 teachings of "Up Daddy" excercises, 3rd heaven revelations, etc... I was ABSOLUTELY STUNNED that you would then go on to somehow defend the idea of embracing & integrating Bethel's worship music into your own church's ministry. Yikes !!! Thank you, Spencer, for having reconsidered your position on such a compromising position. I welcome your thoughts...

I have never been drawn to listen to anything from bethel but I do think music can change atmosphere. "And whenever the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand; so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him." 2 Samuel 16:23

Yes, that is true. You can "Tune" the room or space or area you are in, what you actually are tuning is yourself. You are tuning/shifting your focus off yourself and "tuning" it to G-d. The enemy is the prince of the power of the air and when you "Tune" an area and soak it with worship he flees. It's not about making G-d doing anything, it's about clearing the "air", removing the static so you can connect with Him!!!

In 2016, after leaving the church (not my faith in Christ) but just away from an extremely disfunctional church community. 12 years later we moved away from that city and felt a desire to try again. Since I'm a decent rhythm guitar player and wanted to help out this new church, I applied to volunteer on the worship team. The leader was great and I decided to give it a try. I had not been listening to any kind of 'christian' music for decades and was unaware of the wave of 'new christan stars' like Elevation, Bethel, Hillsong etc. BUT, the first time I learned some of these 'BIG' Christian HITS, I was struck by the self-centered lyrics I read. I felt like many of them centered around the self instead of Jesus being lifted up by grateful sinners. Even the word SIN seemed to be absent from 99% of these songs. Needless to say, we left the church because, sadly, they lived up to the self serving lyrics of the songs they were singing on sunday. Still looking and abiding in His Word for guidance. 💔🙏

If it comes as any encouragement, you might want to try CityAlight, Keith and Kristyn Getty, Shane and Shane, and Matt Papa. I think you might find a stark contrast in lyrics. this is honestly pretty scary… my church is held in my home, and our worship is one of our church members with his guitar, with him and his daughter singing. the bare minimum. i have felt the holy spirit move in my home with just this, no “tuning the room” or “shifting the atmosphere.” when we worship the Lord we step into his presence, he does not lower himself for us. our church members have been moved emotionally by the Lord and it is nothing i’ve experienced in any other place. i have been moved by the Holy Spirit in my humble home- where two or more gather, there the Lord shall be! ❤️

This is true. Thank you. Using spiritual weapons we are authorised and empowered by Father, Son and Holy Spiritual to enforce Jesus victory until He returns. Jesus taught us to be pray “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”. I do not believe Bethel get everything right all the time but I know countless people who have been moved in the Bethel “atmosphere” to want to live 100% in submission to Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Ps I do not attend a ‘Bethel’ church but I have been to one conference there (which was transformative for me) and for about two years watched their normal services online. Nowadays I rarely watch because so much is happening locally that I don’t need that regular input so much now. In the church I go to they do not follow Bethel but the same Holy Spirit is causing many to devote themselves wholly to serve Father, Son and Spirit. They are rediscovering and earnestly desiring the power gifts of the Spirit. And we need the power gifts of the Spirit and the Gift of the Bible if we are going to truly represent Jesus in our day.

I say anytime we attempt to use a “formula” or think there’s anything “we” can do, outside of what the Bible says, which is…. Be Holy as I am Holy!! Worship is not just the time we spend in a place where we gather with others. If you want God to “show up”. Live it out!! Live for Him, with Him in every instant. Allow His rule & reign in your life completely. “The Room” doesn’t need to be “prepared” for God as much as the Altar of our hearts need rebuilt like Elijah “rebuilt the Altar” then God comes. And when He “fills the room” EVERYTHING that’s not “right” MUST flee. God can do and accomplish ANYTHING He wants!!! Our unwillingness to allow Him to be our LORD, or to try and “change or manipulate His parameters” for that.. therein lies the issue. Attempting to manipulate the supernatural by the natural.

If I may; I was blessed beyond measure when Jesus walked into my life and changed me forever. He was beyond words. It has been wonderful, however this happened for a reason. He is focused on our hearts and building relationships. I asked about the painful religious spirits that took away from experiencing the living God. His holiness and love is what motivates you instantly to obey. We are not allowing him to deal with each one of us the only way He knows how, instead it's pushing people away from him. He is always wanting to show us more. Can we just have grace towards people. You don't see Muslims and others picking each other apart. Unless he calls you into a place to correct (Apostle and Prophet), we should approach the NEW THING He's doing with caution. Love covers a multitude of sins and I heard a lot of reading into motives. The movement is still not that old. Thank you for your consideration. It is really difficult to explain spiritual experiences/knowledge in normal terms. ❤

@@kathywalton4273 This is the scary part of what you believe. Yes Jesus/Yeshua rebuked the storm and the storm obeyed....because he was/is God! Just because we have decided to follow Yeshua and repent and receive the Holy Spirit does not mean we are all little God's running around. Only He is God and He will do things if it is His will that it will be done. That is what we are to find out. We do that by repentance, by reading the Bible and praying. By humbly coming before Him and realizing that He is God, pure and Holy and what we deserve is death. It is only through Christ Jesus that we are given the gift of life. We follow after Him daily and take it as seriously as His own disciples did....ready to lay down their lives for Him. Please also remember, to read the Bible in complete context. Not just taking a scripture and turning it into something it wasn't meant to mean. Something a lot of Christian churches seem to do.

But I’ve visited churches that are very similar, I’ve seen folks run around the church for many many collections, special collections for the Pastor, Bishop, etc. Folks want to think they have something to do with their salvation and that they can somehow manipulate God to their will, not his. And I’ve walked out the door. Thanks for sharing this. It’s of the utmost importance. Continue what you’re doing. In Roman's 8:15 the Aramaic word Abba is used the way a child or one that has an intimate relationship with their father is expressing themselves. It is reasonable to think of a child reaching up and crying to their father to lift them up. Either we are worshiping our Heavenly Father in times of corporate worship or not. We should know. Why should we need someone to instruct us about the error of our ways?

What's wrong with shifting the atmosphere? I mean, if you watch horror movies, you're gonna have a horrible atmosphere in your home. If you welcome demons , you're gonna have a "dark atmosphere"? If you welcome the Lord, light, and truth into your home, you're going to have a more holy atmosphere. Jesus put certain people who didn't have faith out of the room to change the atmosphere. I appreciate how you approached this Spencer. Like you, I don't enjoy the videos where people call out other Christians and get loud and negative about it. You didn't do any of that. You simply pointed out instances where the practices shown were not in line with traditional Christian beliefs. I think that they were "off" in ways that a lot of casual Christians wouldn't catch, and even a lot of people would overlook as "just different than my church", so pointing them out specifically - and explaining what was wrong about it - was helpful. (But not inflammatory.) Thank you.

In the beginning years of my walk with the Lord I was in a churches like this. I thought this was what the Bible was about. I went on to be homeless for 20 years while following the Lord and state questioning this. And still I get so many people telling me this is how it is. Even in 2018 and 2022 the churches I was in taught this. I'd argue with the pastor's wives that can't be like this. They'd say I have some secret sin, or my faith isn't strong enough. I'd be so confused and I'd examine myself thoroughly trying to figure out what secret sin I would have or how I can get stronger faith. Because I don't know how much stronger Faith somebody can have when they're sleeping outside on the sidewalks and they can sleep soundly knowing that God is protecting them and that nothing can happen to me without God's permission. Now I have to unlearn so much. And I even went to the other extreme to try to balance out or something.

The more the spirit is at work in a church the more true peace there is (it should feel right). The less the spirit in a church.. the more it resembles the popular views of society.

Our hearts and minds are not to be focused on the 'things' of this earth, rather, on the 'hearts' of this earth. Man and his greed has shifted what is truly important to our Lord, and that is the hearts of people. You stay in touch with God, read your Bible, pray, all of this daily or more. @LeadingWorshipWell
@LeadingWorshipWell Жыл бұрын
The problem is... It's not that simple. We can use the same words - God, Holy Spirit, Jesus and baptism - but mean completely different things. The vocabulary we use is defined by the CONTEXT in which we use it. For example, Bethel and I both use the word "God." We even both spell it with a capital G which differentiates us from when other people speak of "god." But I don't worship a God who can be called down by playing specific chord progressions. I don't worship a God who commands us to baptize people so that they can receive a double portion of the Holy Spirit or for the sole purpose of healing them - especially without any recognition of sin and repentance involved. I don't worship a God who promises to increase our income and decrease our expenses. And I don't worship a God who lives in the "third heaven." Therefore, we can both sing about God - even using the same song (which is why I think it's still okay to use some Bethel songs as long as the lyrics don't embody incorrect theology) but the CONTEXT in which they are used defines the vocabulary used in the songs. Thus, making one singing of the song glorifying while rendering another singing of the song unglorifying.

If the church leaders want to facilitate people's drawing near to God, they should read scriptures telling of the greatness and the wonders of God. I am so amazed at Jesus. In my 40-plus years' knowing Him, He has always kept me from any involvement in all of these "super-spiritual" fads and movements that have come and gone. My first one was the John Wimber healing phenom, and I've seen so many-they've even touched my church at times, but I was never able to participate in them. Since then, I've had to realize that I was just seeking what I am hearing these bethel people seeking--more "spiritual woo-woo", rather than what was good for me, such as getting grounded in the Word and seeking Jesus' face. I think that's what you're seeing. People are not seeking Jesus and a closer walk with Him; they seem to want more power and goodies, like the spoiled kids of the rich man, who never want to just sit with him and be together...it seemed like Jesus was never even mentioned in the portion that was shared here.

I have left my church due to many unresolved problems & attended another church that I thought was safe only to find out that they have linked arms with Bethel in various ways. I attempted to share my concerns with the pastors but to no avail. I have not been a part of any congregation since last December due to difficulty in finding a church that doesn't sing Bethel, Hillsong or Elevation. 6:00 shifting the atmosphere has a parallel in traditional worship where we ask the congregation to prepare their hearts to enter the presence of God. Two points: it is appropriate to call to worship and ask for God's presence to dwell with his people. Second, reformed worship doesn't need music to tune the room, we usually do this in silent prayer.

I was a member for all 10 years but stopped going to church at all for the last three years because of an issue that is too involved to explain here. I will just say that I was devastated and only because of being a seasoned Christian did I survive the mistreatment i.e. spiritual abuse. I will just say that what you share here is the tip of the iceberg of the problems at Bethel. There are wonderful people there who truly love Jesus, but not everyone has the spiritual maturity and background of truly studying the scriptures to be aware of the things that are off base, New Age. the good news is that God Almighty is on the throne and he is cleaning house. The Bible says judgment comes to the household of faith first. It’s happening.

Thanking you for your work and sharing your thoughts. Have you considered there is more to the statement that “truth is truth” therefore it must be ok? As with all our biblical understanding, context plays a very important role (eg when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, garden of Eden). So if we sing/recite a truth that comes in the context of a movement that you know has MAJOR issues, could you see the many pitfalls lyrically, theologically and by association you’d have to navigate as a worship leader? There’s a rather longish KZbin post by Alisa Childers exploring how she’s actually changed from “truth is truth” to not a good idea (paraphrase). Keep up the good work, great content.

Very true. An example that comes to mind is the song “King of My Heart”. The bridge lyrics say “You’re never gonna let me down”. I do believe that God never lets us down. But probably not in the same way that the writer of that song intended. I think there are situations where we experience suffering in this life, but that ultimately “all things work together for good to them that love God” (Romans 8:28). That means that we may never see “breakthrough” for health or finances or whatever on this side of eternity, but that we have a good reward waiting for us if we love the Lord and follow Him. However, somebody with a shallow understanding of that lyric could become disillusioned with church or Christianity when they experience disappointment in their life and start thinking that God let them down. I’ve seen this type of thing happen personally. We need to be very careful to take our role as worship leaders seriously and think about the misconceptions or presuppositions that people may have when they sing a lyric.

Maybe it’s just me but The songs are so repetitive and “empty” feeling even though the musicians seemed so “elevated “. It was strange.

God bless you pastor. Others may use His word for the bad but God uses them for the good. In the end God is still the author. Thank you for your tips in worship by the way. ❤

At 11:07. I went to the Toronto Airport Fellowship many years ago in the late 1990s. There were people in a big warehouse setting rolling around on the ground laughing. It had something to do a Bible passage that said people were so filled with the spirit they laughed. What I actually witnessed was more like nervous laughter which can be contagious in a large group setting. Anyways I left and never returned. I dis not think it a reverent way to worship Christ.

I always thought we were supposed to be faithful with a little and then God will give us more, in other word, good stewards with what we're given, not to pray to be given so much that we can be bad stewards and then still have abundance. However, in a roundabout way, Bethel caused me to want to dig deeper into my Bible.

Worship is obedience...worship is giving worth + movement ( action) to whatever you're worshipping...people worship a whole lot of things besides Christ...namely the flesh...singing and raising hands that aren't clean. With hearts that aren't pure...most CERTAINLY IS NOT WORSHIP.

We attended a church like this. It got really weird right before we left. Thankfully, God showed me some of the things wrong with the church, the biggest being witchcraft.

Those reasons are NOT why anyone should get water baptized. Are they not being taught the scripture at all ?

No they are not being taught scripture. Look up videos done by brother Justin Peters. He has videos that go in-depth about it many of their practices that are stemed from both the occult and Hinduism. Everything from rolling on the floor in giggle fits to "necking" and holy ghost head nibbles from hand puppets... Its absolute insanity

2nd John says that we are not even to let false teachers into our homes (context: house churches -- or simply the meetings where true christians gather). How then is this a sound opinion that we can still sing songs written by known heretical false teachers and visibly and financially endorse their false ministries? If we know this, then aren't these the matters of idolatry, obedience, purity and protection?

I live around the corner from multiple Bethel campuses. They just started on another 37 acre campus. Bethel is a roaring enterprise in Redding CA . I've heard they believe in grave sucking and flopping around on the floor after they are "SLAIN by the spirit " I was also told it's so.loud they give out ear protection at the door. I don't go there so I don't know. I have heard them doing their goofy giggling they call holy laughter.

Because offering thanksgiving and praise to the Lord does NOTHING to the atmosphere(spiritual realm we also exist in) I guess. Wonder why the Lord tells us to do that??

Stayin in an atmosphere of thanksgiving and praise changes me. In a household of seekers and non believers I can be salt and light. I am given the Joy of the Lord and it is strengthening me daily.

Some of the people's comments are critical but off. Eg - Just because you don't like Bethel, or how they do worship doesn't mean you have to drop a song, you otherwise enjoy, from your own assemblies. Also re the baptisms, God answers us at our point of need according to our faith which can include being healed, given an anointing, delivered or whatever He wills, not whether we know the correct doctrine about water baptism.

You need to reexamine and reevaluate what you "understand" to be biblical....or not. Based on the comment you posted here, you have been swept up in the post-modern notion of anything goes. "The Church Of Oprah" has no place in the minds and hearts of those who call Jesus Lord and Savior of their life.

I have watched a different Bethell baptism service to you, and I was horrified that not one person in the line mentioned anything to do with their salvation, Christ, repentance, or that being baptised is a public declaration of our surrendering our lives to Christ. - It was all very egocentric, nauseating garbage that had no relation to anything I have ever read in the Bible. They are definitely more New Age than Christian. They never mention taking up their cross to follow Jesus - they don’t believe there should be any personal cost to following Jesus.

2 Kings 2:9 says When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” Is this verse referring to a double portion of Elijah's spirit or the Holy Spirit?
