As someone who plays League daily, 100% agree with everything you say. As much fun as I have playing the game, it's one of the most miserable things I can do to myself. Bob was 100% accurate with the balancing issues, and the way players act. I cant even say that I dont act that way when I play, it really does fuck with you. It's one of my all time most played games, but I'd still agree with their rating. The game is 100% the most mid popular game to exist, and you are better off shooting yourself in the foot than interacting with the community.

The problem is the absolute mountain of time it takes to be able to understand and play the game. It is a game with incredible complexity, COMBINED with every detail matters, so you need to have a basic grasp on every little thing, while there are 100 million little things to learn. It makes for an incredibly toxic environment because all those tiny details are "common sense" to someone, why doesnt everyone know them.

Balancing is rarely the actual issue. For as much as people complain, most champions are released weak, and even the strong champions aren't OP, they're just rarely countered by people because most people play their comfort picks. That said, players are definitely the worst part of the game.

As someone who plays League of Legends, playing the game w/strangers is basically like coming across a cat on the street and wanting to pet it Either they are neutral, somewhat nice/decent, or the most common thing where they hiss/attack you with or without a reason. Toxicity is the main reason why I usually have both my teammates and the chat muted. I do understand that your enemies try to get into your heads when they trash talk you, but trash talking your teammates does not accomplish anything. If anything, it could make them feel bad about themselves and cause them to try even less.

The problem isn't enemy being toxic to you, it's your own teammates being toxic to you. One small slip up gets magnified a thousand fold by your own teammates. And when they go through the exact same slip up, they''ll deny and defend themselves like their life depends on it. It doesn't become about winning, it becomes about playing the game absolutely perfectly. The few games I've enjoyed over the course of a decade are the ones where we're all okay with eachother making mistakes. The game is really fun, but the competitive nature of its audience makes it less fun. Me and my friends talk about League like it's a cigarette. When we come home from work "wellp, time to get my daily dose of cancer!", and when some of us quit we're all supportive and praise eachother. It feels so strange to think about how this is normal behavior for us.

People are absolutely delusional about their place in the game. Everyone knows how to play the game better, it is not a game to have fun, but to WIN, it is always someone else's fault and if not, Riot is the absolute worst company to ever release a videogame and death threats have been sent out because of balance changes. I genuinely don't understand how a videogame turns normal people into frothing animals this quickly. I personally don't really care about the toxicity, the worst thing someone can do is ruin the fun for the rest of the team and that rarely happens nowadays. I just think it's annoying that the discussion around the game is just "the game is toxic" outside the playerbase and " *I* think the game and company is bad" within it.

I used to play League (one of the few who 'quit' and actually did stop playing as its been years), and it was fun. Made some good friends over league. But I think the game's gotten more toxic over time. I realized that its very easy to be judgemental of your teammates especially when you dont see what they're doing, or they arent doing exactly what you would've done in the same spot. It literally got so bad I just stopped playing. I realized I wasnt having fun regardless of if I won or loss, and people were just so bad to each other I was muting people every game. 3:00 I always assumed that was just people whining cause theres patches every two weeks with alot of things changing up and down. I had heard of Tyler1 but never watched his stuff. I really wouldnt be shocked if the toxic players just get cultivated cause they see big esports dudes being toxic to their teammates and they go 'oh sweet, Im justified in doing this!" I also hate the term 'Kappa" because of league. People would say it ALL THE TIME but I didnt watch Twitch, and there were no 'in-chat emotes' so I had no idea what that was or why people said it and I just never got an answer what that meant. I'll be thankful that the fighting game community, excluding some elitist jerks, is filled with alot more cool people that are more willing to help you learn instead of just yelling at you cause you're doing a weird build despite the fact you're literally the only person on the team with more kills than deaths

The problem is riot has made the game (especially ranked) 1v9. Basically they encourage you to play for yourself regardless of role in what should be a team game. That on top of very poor moderation of bots, smurfs, competitive/popularity weighted balancing/designs and generally non consumer friendly business decisions have left the community a battlefield over the 10+ years the games been out. There's a reason league players were screaming not to play league when arcane came out 💀

Yeah. This is why E-Sports will never be taken seriously, because with physical sports, you NEED to have a sense of decorum, restraint and show sportsmanship to your fellow competitors on the field. I remember my experience with league. I had been playing for about 2 weeks with my whole first week spent against bots learning a little bit about the game and how characters play. I then went into the multiplayer casual side, not even ranked and within my first 3 games was told to kill myself more then I thought was possible. And to be fair I wasn't good at the game and I used a weird build on a mid tier character. (I believe at least, I was not and am not an expert on anything of that game.) After that, combined with the fact that anytime I played my crappy little laptop would try and light on fire I decided it wasn't worth it and left. Overall 10/10 experience and would never recommend it to anyone. There are easier ways to be insulted and have them actually mean something.

MOBAs, in general, have toxicity because they demand teamwork, and people want their teammates to be the best, and if they don't perform to their expectations, they get sour. Dota 2 and League of Legends got this problem. ANY competitive game will suffer from this issue, whereas more causal games, such as a game I play, Warframe, there's very little toxicity.

I used to play a lot of league in highschool with my friends and made a lot more along the way with whom I still keep in touch today, but after graduation many of us barely played it cuz the game was fun when all of us would play it together. Some of us stopped playing it, some still play from time to time. I uninstalled the game some time ago. It's a fun game, but not when you're playing alone and most probably going ranked solo/duo. For me it got really boring at some point: flaming, FF 15, lanes diff, running it down (and I mean going straight into towers), I've seen all this thousands of times. It's like watching the same episode of some show again and again. Whenever people play this game that will act in a certain way and never think outside the box. Like Mark, I also tried out DoTA back when it was just a WCIII mod. And by "tried out DoTA" I naturally mean "95-98% of all custom lobbies were bot-hosted DoTA matches so there was fuck-all else to do in custom lobbies". Joined a match. Started to download the map. Kicked instantly. Joined another match. Downloading map, kicked instantly. Apparently, these nerds were so insistent that if you had to download the map from the host, you were dog shit on their shoe and not worth their time, so you had to download the official version off of the website. Did that. Joined a match. Introduced myself and included "I'm new so I hope this turns out alright!". Instant-kicked. Tried another one. Skipped the introduction. Actually made it into the match. Had no clue what the heroes had to offer so I picked the one I liked the looks of most. In most other MOBA or MOBA-like maps I had played, using hero abilities against mobs was okay, encouraged even. Not in DoTA. The instant I used a hero ability on a mob, *the entire server lost its fucking mind* like they just watched me devour a newborn kitten and proceeded to rain obscenities upon me from a maelstrom of pure malice. Hands-down the most toxic online community I've wandered into. And I'm told League is *worse* than that.

I would 100% say that the community is an aspect worth bringing up when ranking how good of an *experience* a game brings you. It might not be a relevant aspect when stating how well a game is made, but since these rankings consider every aspect of the games in question, it's an important topic to discuss. There's a reason I'd rather play Deep Rock Galactic every day over a game like League. Because on one side you have a game where everyone is working together, being nice to each other, discouraging toxic behavior, congratulating each other on their accomplishments, encouraging each other to keep playing, having a bunch of good laughs under the umbrella of a bunch of humble, kind developers, just generally being lovely, and on the other side, you have the gameplay equivalent of scratching your nails on chalkboard.

My friends finally got me to play league after more than a year of me saying I won't play it because "it really just sounds like you hate your life when you play it" (which they answered with yes). League players hate league. From my own experience it can be really fun if you have a good winning round but then you sometimes get stomped so bad from the very first minute of the game that you already know you're not gonna win and then you can't even escape that half hour hell without a penalty. Granted I've never played a normal or ranked game (I was advised to stay with the "fun" gamemodes) but between getting frustrated because the other team wiped yours out completely and the fact that the balancing issues can make or break your game it can get you really mad. Not to mention that getting/stealing kills can be the thing that breaks your team like mario cart breaks friendships.

I can honestly agree with what you guys are saying here. I think the game itself is interesting in it's own sort of way, but the playerbase and just how it affects people in general is really what made me quit the game. I've been off the game for well over a year now because I was just not liking how I was acting while playing and also just watching how my friends were acting in the game and all the other players just ultimately led to me actually just hating the game altogether. I have felt much better without it. I still look at clips at times and I think the new characters are nice, but it's not enough for me to want to go back to it either

I played League when I was in hs, and only stuck around for awhile because I had the opposite of Wade's experience; I did a few rounds and my friends that played regularly were like "why are you good at this?? Isn't this your first MOBA?? I don't... I don't understand." so I kept playing cuz it was fun and they wanted to continually team up with me. Then some of their other friends joined us and _they_ were assholes and so I played with randos until I couldn't stand it and quit. I played a lot of HOTS tho, that was fun. I feel like that one is better built to let you fuck around against bots and avoid many people. I gave that one up when I gave up my blizzard games during college though.

The best defense against toxicity like that is to be unflappable and do the occasional fatal blow of toxicity, usually a heavily irony-baked riposte in response to continuous toxicity from someone. If you prove yourself to have iron skin, and then destroy your enemy with only three words, you usually get respect from that lobby from then on. It's like prison in that sense. The other defense is to be even more radioactive than them, but not in an aggressive fashion. Just passively radiate toxic energy until everyone else gets so uncomfortable they can't stand it. Usually brings them into submission. This has been my MOBA (and general Internet ) experience.

As someone who plays League, it's honestly a fun game but just like Mark said the game is terrible because of the toxic people who play it, the game is also addicting that's why some people can't get away from it which is bad because of how much time you're gonna consume by even playing one match and the toxicity isn't good for your health. I agree with the ranking but if toxicity didn't exist in league I would put it at A also don't play the game save yourself.

As someone with plenty of playtime in Smite, i stopped playing because of the players. Either you get people with the situational awareness of a slug, you get people who insult you for them playing like crap, or the enemy team is so garbage that you're not having fun and then in the result screen you can enjoy that toxic dumpster fire. The idea of the game is good, it's just that 85% of people suck at moba's (or games in general) and the only reason they play it, is cause it's free. I felt like 95% of my time in the game wasn't fun, felt like i was wasting my time.

I'm someone who definitely mainly plays MOBA by definition (most hours played are MOBA games). I play the most in SMITE, second Dota 2, third League of Legends, and a short while in other MOBAs. League in my opinion is 100 percent the most toxic, but it's also the most popular. SMITE and Dota 2 have their own toxic communities as well. In terms of gameplay, I actually think LoL is the worst of the 3. I think having 160+ champions in the game leaves little to no room for unique playstyles and abilitites. Plus the time to kill in that game is so low that it's just not fun in majority of the games I've played. I for sure liked the game as some points but it's just not a good playable game. Now SMITE was slowly turning into this as well with the time to kill and they revamped the entire thing because everyone had a complaint about it. I can see why league of legends is popular with how "beginner" friendly it is for those who either rarely plays games or just suck at it. But I cannot see the majority actually enjoying the game with all the cons, which is why I stopped playing it.

LoL is a mixed bag, had a game today where one team mate was off his week chat ban, game went solid, no cussing/slurs/bad attitude, every member of the team just rocked it and we won, now the previous game, one team mate was spaming pings left and right expecting everyone to jump on his command 5 minutes into the game, and when we didn't follow, he d/c'd from the game. Then there have been matches where everyone starts out cool calm and collected and than just goes to petty burns as the match doesn't go their way. LoL is an odd game...and it's players are equally as odd. XD I won't play LoL w/o a friend tho. >_> HoTS is more friendly I feel, and chill over all.

So from my own experience playing LoL i can say this, the game is equally fun as it is frustrating, however the problem with the game itself boils down to the playerbase, it's too overcompetitive blended with modern day naracissm, now ofc it is a competetive game so overcompetitive players are expected, however just like modern day society a lot of people can't seem to see their own mistakes or flaws, which then turns into a violent cycle, after a while people slowly become toxic, especially since the game itself has had a massive decline in required skill to play, as a result a lot of people (even myself) get exceedingly frustrated by an enemy player snowballing, but with this mentality it tends to go one of two ways 1. Losing the game? My teammates are shit and holding me back and the enemy are abusing broken champs 2. Winning the game? I'm skilled player that's gonna carry and my oppenents are shit Now ofc exceptions exist, but people seem to vent their frustration anyway regardless of how it will affect others and the match itself

Something about league gives people the absolute weakest mental strength i’ve ever seen. Even respectful/nice comments will set a person off to full tilt. This is why people have trouble “escaping” the game because their mindset is that of a toddler who can’t handle giving up an addiction they not only hate but gave TONS of better alternatives to. Gaming industry is MASSIVE there is no reason you need to stay attached to any one game especially one you “hate”

The game itself is really good the lore is so deep and well put that lore alone makes it a top tier game, gameplay has its ups and downs yes many champions should not exist, yes many champs should be nerfed/buffed/changed but that aside it is still really fun to play your favourite champ and out of over 140champions you're bound to love atleast 1. The players are the biggest problem to this game, for various reasons. Rating 7,5/10 would be higher if not for the bad part of the community and it would've been a 0 if not for the lore/gameplay/variety

League earned its toxic reputation way before Tencent acquired the majority stake. I think it's more important to note, though, that Tencent having a majority stake is not the same as choosing to exert creative or information control, as multiple other developers (Digital Extreme Warframe, Klei Entertainment ONI/Don't Starve) have been invested heavily in by them, without showing much of a change in trajectory that wasn't already present. Not that it makes me comfortable to see Tencent getting their fingers into games, hence why I steer clear of investing in them. Doesn't stop me from playing a game I otherwise enjoy, however.

They will be toxic for you sucking, and be toxic for you winning. I wasn't Toxic enough either, but they saw that as a bridge too far. League is super addictive and incredibly toxic. This combines to a cesspit of humanity. People get tilted, but continue to play because they're addicted, which means they tilt others, who then tilt others etc etc. I've been playing for over a year and have had maybe one game where we played like shit but people were chill. I never play ranked, but even in normals people take it SO seriously that if one person on the team is underperforming, they'll tilt and rage. However, when things go well? When you're playing a really good game? That's such a good feeling, something you chase constantly (hence the addiction) People need to abide by the 'quit after 3 losses' rule because by then you're not in a good headspace and will ruin it for others
