Hi, Distractible Team!!! :D :D :D Thank you so much for directing me to The Thing. My perspective is changed indeed. It is pleasure to learn and laugh from your podcast. In the cartoon Dexter’s Laboratory: “Dexter’s Lab. A Story.” His dog was barking and wanting Dexter to follow him. Dexter created a potion to make him talk. He followed the dog. “The thing! C’mon. I got to show you the thing.” They run to it. Once there, his dog stamps his paws, “It’s here! The thing!!! It’s here! It’s here!!! The thing! The thing!” *the thing was a fire hydrant.

I've been to The Thing many times. It's a fake mummy. The cool thing about the exhibit isn't the end "Thing", it's all the stuff you pass on the way there. They recently overhauled the place, though, so it's now alien-dinosaur themed. Not sure how that plays out...
@widdershinswitch Жыл бұрын
As a local near "The Thing" I can tell you the only way in which it will change you forever after you see it is that you'll be out a dollar and 5-10 minutes of your life will be taken that you'll never see again. 10/10 experience. you should go.

For anyone wanting further context who’s still confused about what this “thing” is that doesn’t live near Arizona, it’s this little rest stop where you walk in and there’s just a ton of Native American and alien merchandise. Just like small trinkets and things and then funny stuff involving aliens. Then, there’s a door at one end of the shop that you can pay $5 at and you walk through this museum that loops back into the shop. In this museum, it gives a weird historical timeline of when the meteors wiped out the dinosaurs and how the radiation drew aliens here and they started trying to colonize the earth or something like that and it failed so they left but at the end of the loop is a glass case with what’s apparently a mummified pair of aliens, a mother and a child, who are some of the only proof of extraterrestrial life. It’s really cheesy and goofy, but really fun.

We had to stop at that gas station on our way to El Paso and I was trying so hard to avoid it because I hate spectacle, I literally tried to walk into the dairy Queen but all the entrances to the dairy Queen only accessible by the entrance of the gas station with The Thing in it. What Mark said is exactly what I was thinking because it was a big life event driving across country & didn't want it to get in my head 😆 about a year later I googled what the thing was and was completely underwhelmed. Now, if you want to see some weird s*** go to the Buckhorn Saloon in San Antonio 💀💀💀 that place is nightmare fuel

Holy crap I actually know what the thing is! you see signs for it all along the I-10 in Arizona, it's a goofy lil' tourist trap shop. and they're whole selling point literally is "THE THING" with mystery symbols and whatnot. and the whole attraction is walking through this path that leads through like old sheds and part of the building the gift store and all of it is in. and after you follow these painted on the ground footprints, "all the while passing general curious and odd stuff on the walls" you get to the Barn with THE THING. and all it is, is a tiny wrapped mummified figure in a concrete and glass box. pretty sure it was just a doll wrapped in layers and layers of gauze, then soaked in wood stain and burnt a bit. 6/10 I barley remember it since I've only ben once when I was a kid, but we BEGGED my parents to take us every time we passed it and saw the signs. I grew up seeing those billboards, and when i went on active duty and had to drive from my home in So. Cal. to my first duty station in the southeast US, i decided to stop as often as i wanted along the way to see interesting stuff, and i finally stopped and saw it! It's a fun little museum that takes you along a little hallway with some old road signs and vintage everyday objects and then you go in and see the mummies. (The mother was apparently wearing the child on her back when they fell, iirc, into, like, a pit that preserved their bodies really well.) Another time, i was driving the same route straight through, so i decided to stop only at IHOPs along the way, and it was interesting to see how their menu actually changed regionally. #makeroadtripsfun
