From Stoke to Santiago via Blackburn | Ben Brereton-Diaz Football's Real Stories | LO72

The story of Ben Brereton-Diaz is one for the ages.
Born in Stoke-on-Trent & coming through the youth ranks at Nottingham Forest to make his league debut in the EFL. Ben Brereton's career looked to have hit a stand still shortly after a big money move to Blackburn Rovers at the age of 18.
After a difficult time trying to discover his best form after being played out of position & injury problems, things finally began to click for the Blackburn forward & thanks to players of the Football Manager game who discovered he was half Chilean & began an online campaign to get him called up to the Chilean national team.
A hot-streak of form in the EFL Championship saw him earn a call-up & he has represented the country a total of nine times, scoring three goals & played in the Copa America with his new International teammates like Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal & Claudio Bravo.

What does that mean? It has that accent because it has the tone of the Chilean accent of a sector of Chile, it is very strong and fast, the Chilean accent in Spanish is very confusing, no one who speaks Spanish understands us, nor do Argentine-Peruvian Mexican-Spanish etc.

@@claudia-lx1zn Hi Margarita, I'm referring to her accent when speaking English, which is a mixture of the typical English accent of a native Spanish-speaker (nothing really particularly Chilean in it though to be honest with you...) and the accent of Stoke-on-Trent, Brereton's hometown and an area sometimes called 'the Potteries' due to its historical status as the centre of the ceramics industry in the UK. The Stoke accent is quite distinctive but not particularly well known, and I have never heard it combined with a 'hispanoparlante' English accent before, so it sounds quite unusual - but I was being serious, I absolutely love it. A couple of quite Stokie things you might be able to pick out from the way she speaks (although there are a few): 1) her pronunciation of 'so' at around 5.52 with quite a strong 'u' sound in the vowel, which is identical to her husband's pronunciation a couple of seconds later, and really quite different to Bradley Dack's pronunciation of 'no' and 'go' that comes afterwards (he is from London), and even better 2) when she says 'we just love it and enjoying it'. So first, she pronounces the word 'love' as 'lov' (which is true of all midlands/northern English accents as well as Stoke's) instead of 'lahve' (which is what a typical Spanish speaker would say), and then even better 'it' as 'eet' with a long vowel sound and a very clear 't' at the end of the word - this is in particular is quite unusual and very, very Potteries. I saw some videos of Ben before he played for Chile, and I must say that he didn’t impress me at all, but after playing for Chile, besides or against great football players, Ben changed completely: he is more confident, he is scoring a lot, he is very motivated. I dont think it is true that Rovers fans were disappointed we signed him, I for one was quite excited. A young player who had broken through at Forest, I was quite surprised we managed to pull it off. The issue was after a few months he didn't look like the player who had burst onto the Championship scene, he looked like he struggled to control the ball, he got pushed off it easily, there wasn't much there in his game, so fans started to turn because given everything else we couldn't afford a £6m flop. But the story has been sensational, he has gone from underconfident and underperforming to carrying the hopes of not only the club but his mother's homeland on his shoulders.

I can understand the frustrations to some extent but a club like ours doesn't spend 6m on a teenager unless they've done some serious scouting. Full credit to Mowbray et al for having the foresight to see the player he could become once he had bulked up, and having the balls to do such a transfer. It could well have cost him his job.

As a Chilean, all I can say is that ben gave as the hope we had missed after the great success we had in 2015-2016. Of course we are proud of our players, but several internal conflict made our national team lose their category and started their decay. Ben gave us hope, gave us fresh air, and made us believe in the new generations that were going to replace our "generación dorada". I really hope ben keeps being himself, he will, perhaps, be the next crack of "la roja"

He’s now only Brereton anymore, he’s Brereton Diaz (at least for us)! Chile is a country that’s going through hard times, and football is something that unites us (at least most of us). Ever since the beginning he gave his 110% and that’s something we appreciate! We’re people of effort, people that work for what they want and people that receive other chileans with lots of love and open arms. He was kinda the “underdog” but he impressed us so much and he charmed us as well! We know there are big things coming for him, Rovers you better keep an eye on him! Watched Ben against his home town club (as a Stoke City Supporter) and you know what, good look to the lad! Goes to show that you should never give up, the harder it gets the harder you try and this is a great story. As much as it pains me that he's not a Forest player anymore, I am still happy to see him do well. He always had the potential. I remember at the time thinking we'd been absolutely fleeced because he had such huge potential. We've had one academy graduate who's flown the nest go on to represent Chile and another who's just made his debut for Poland. Next thing I'll be hearing Ben Osborn make his international debut for Qatar just in time for the world cup due to some bizarre family connection!

First time I've watched this and the start is a tad frustrating. About half of the rovers fans were always behind Ben, there were a lot of arguments online and in the stadium (against those grumbling whenever he was on the ball). I wasn't alone at being ecstatic at his signing, he was someone we'd followed since his introduction against arsenal for forest. I always signed him on fifa or FM for rovers 😁 and he always became a monster! I'm not saying I could have predicted this, but we pleaded patience as his slow start was down to being frozen out at forest. He didn't have a preseason and suddenly signed for a big fee, I think if TM had his way BB wouldn't have played so early but for that price tag he had no choice. Before he got chance to shine he got injured against Fulham at the start of his first full season. Cycle repeated itself. And again I wasn't alone in seeing a resurgent Ben from the start of the pandemic. Driving the ball, getting goals and assists but as a winger. Arma was the main man, BB scored as many as arma did when he was the winger. Ben had started to show his quality before he went to Chile - but came back from that on another level!
