Leah4sci.com/guide presents: How To 'Memorize' Organic Chemistry Reactions and Reagents! Video recording of Leah4sci live workshop.
📺Watch Next: Organic Chemistry 1 Reactions Summary • Quick Organic Chemistr...
While understanding rather than memorization is KEY to orgo success, with so many reactions and reagents to learn you can't help but memorize.
And while there's no 'right' or 'wrong' way to go about it, there are tips and tricks you can use to be more efficient in your approach and long term retention.
Most of the Leah4sci workshops are only available in the Organic Chemistry Study Hall leah4sci.com/join I felt this one was so important I'm making it available to everyone.
This is a Replay of a LIVE Workshop! You'll see how to maximize your study efforts and retention, memorization tricks beyond the next quiz/exam, and how to find reagent structure/details quickly and efficiently!
I get a small commission when you purchase the reagent guide using coupon code LEAH4SCI for 15% off. Details here: leah4sci.com/guide

I know this is old content, but it’s still SO helpful. Sometimes I want to cry when I leave my lecture. We’re always asked “any questions?” At the end but I think we’re all just in such shock that we’re silent…I hope I look back on this comment one and laugh. Thank you for all the help, Leah!

Your videos are great. An analogy for organic chemistry is a lot like playing a musical instrument. Playing a musical instrument relies on muscle memory after understanding the mechanics of the music. Same for organic chemistry- there is the understanding part of the mechanics of how it works and then the muscle memory of getting these reactions to do what you need. So what has helped me is to keep writing these reactions our until it becomes second nature.

Best tool to use that helped me get As in all my classes. I would sit up front in class and press record on my phone and turn it over so the professors wouldn't know. I would take those recordings and listen to them every night, in the car, before exams and it helped me retain information better than taking notes or better than any other technique. It got to the point where I didn't even have to take notes anymore. I listened to the recordings one last time before exam day and I remembered every single detail the professor mentioned in those classes. I would be the first one done on the exams with the best grades lmao. And students were getting pisses bc they would take all these notes but I would just listen to my recordings haha.

Hey Leah, thank you so much for offering your knowledge in an approachable way. The problem I have had with the university, at least here in Germany, was the impersonal relationship between teacher and student. I am pretty scared to ask my teachers questions. Also, I think you have a very soothing, yet motivating voice. I will be a teacher in Chemistry for high school soon. We have a very compromised school model here in my city where the whole range of very restricted to very able pupils go to and mostly, Chemistry class will only cater to 2 % of pupils. It discouraged me to study for OC I and II whereas my pupils will not even get their heads around a structural understanding of chemical compounds. Pushing through will be a lot more encouraging with the help of your resources.

Speaking of the interacting part. My last exam I couldn't quite remember if something would be o/p or m, but I could remember where on the page things were written and like imagined my note page and used general location to figure out where I wrote the o/p and the m activating things and where the specific one from a question was to see if it was written near m or o/p label. And it worked.

Oh, thank God you didn't actually stress memorization rotely. Indeed, I found that organic chemistry was more easy to "rationalize". The only "memorization" aspect I used was to know the or be able to derive Lewis structures as well as some first principles (understanding electrophilic and nucleophilic centers, Frontier MO theory, and positive and negative). However, the organic course I took and the one I tutored had very complex scenarios and molecules and exams had many problems pitched at something between an upper division organic and a graduate level course.

You're very welcome! The key is to understand and be able to reason your way through it. The more you practice the more familiar you become with the reagents and conditions, the more you'll be able to answer these questions without (or with minimal) rote memorization

Hello Leah, as an organic chemistry student who has watched and benefited from almost all of your videos, I am currently doing my master's degree in this field. I live in Turkey and frankly the economy is not very good here. According to the current exchange rate, 1 dollar is worth 30 Turkish liras and the scholarship I am currently receiving is around 120 dollars per month. The pdf guide you mentioned in the video seems to be very useful for the exams I am preparing for. Is there a chance I can buy this guide at a more affordable price? Whether you answer or not, thank you, you inspire me to be a good organic chemist. Love from Turkey 😊

38:50 Sure, but how do you know you're right without a problem/answer set? You could just keep studying the same mistake.
@Leah4sci
@Leah4sci 11 ай бұрын
That's a great question! The key is to create problems that are exactly the same, for a reaction you already CLEARLY know. Adding a substituent should change it for example 2-methyl-2-butene vs 2-methyl-2-pentene = same overall concept but an added carbon. The idea is to change it enough where it looks almost different but not. And when in doubt, use a problem set that includes a solution such as the free quizzes on my website so that you DO have the answers to double check your work. See the different topic quizzes here leah4sci.com/syllabus

At 52:40 you stated NaBH4 was another oxidizing reagent. I was taught it was a reduction reagent, so we should use a Jones Reagent to get to the last reaction. Is that incorrect? I’m only asking because it seems like the last part of the problem went unfinished. Thank you so much - test in 4 days.

just saw that you replied like three hours ago, so i am really hoping you see this okay so basically for different chapters I remember parts of the mechanisms and can go somewhat far for at least partial credit. I have an exam on Friday so decided to sit down and practice. I realized I remember zero reagents pretty much. I am freaking out because I know that we are going to have multiple predict the product and synthesis problems. Is there anyway that you could direct me to a reagent cheat sheet of some sort?
