when dealing with separate substituents, alphabetical order puts ethyl before methyl. However, when dealing with a substituent ON another substituent, you have to name the sub before the parent. When methyl is ON ethyl, you name it (1-methylethyl) to show that methyl is ON ethyl at position 1

I have a question about the example that starts at 2:00. Why wouldn't that molecule be 5-ethyl-2-methyloctane? If you start from the left of the molecule and curve down, that also gives you a parent chain of 8-> octane. But this gives you 2 substituents rather than 1 like you have. Isn't the rule choose the parent that will give you the most substituents??
@kerrigangafford84984 ай бұрын

9:18 In this example, can we not name the substituent as secpropyl? Since the carbon connected to the parent chain is coneected to two other carbon atoms?
@Leah4sci Жыл бұрын
The smallest "sec" substituent that we commonly name is "sec-butyl". With this being said, a "sec-propyl" would look exactly the same as an "isopropyl" group. It's just that isopropyl is typically the preferred name.
@tabrezahmed10006 жыл бұрын
Hi i have a question, can we name the compound at 4:16 as 4-(2-methylpropyl)decane? Because in the substituent we can have longest chain as 3 carbon atoms or can we? Please help
@Leah4sci Жыл бұрын
The substituent chain must start at the carbon attached to the parent chain. This means you cannot have a propyl due to the middle of the prop connecting the sub to the parent.

Example at 7:32 why didn't we say 2,2-dimethylpropyl instead of 1,1-dimethylethyl ?
@Leah4sci3 жыл бұрын
2,2-dimethylpropyl would imply two carbons branching off of a three-carbon chain for a total of five carbons. That is not what we see drawn here. We see a total of four carbons in this substituent group.

I echo all the positive vibes on this post. You make ORGO understandable, challenging and dare I say it, even fun. Question. On the example with the answer: 4-(1-methylethyl) I was under the impression that 1 is considered the default if no number is stated. If so, is it necessary to have 1 in the answer? Also, why is methylethyl not in alphabetical order? Thank you again for a great series of ORGO videos.
@Leah4sci3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your kind words. And YES! to orgo being fun!!! These are excellent questions! It’s always better to include more information than less. 1 would be considered the default in the case of having a priority functional group on carbon 1 of the parent chain. However, when naming these branched chain substituents, it’s the standard to include that 1. Secondly, the reason that methyl is stated before ethyl is because the methyl is a branch off of the ethyl. It’s a ‘substituent off of a substituent’. And substituents are always named in front of their parent chain.

at 2:55, how did you that the branch chain had a methyl and ethyl? why not both ethyl or both methyl? do you get to choose which ends to place carbons or methyls??
@Leah4sci Жыл бұрын
The branched substituent on C4 is more commonly known as an isopropyl group. It is not a straight chain. Rather, it is a group of two carbons (an ethyl) with another single carbon (a methyl) further branching off of it. That's why we systematically call it "1-methylethyl". That means an ethyl group with an extra carbon coming off of the first carbon of the ethyl.

At 3:07 in the video when u have 4-(1-methylethyl) Octane, i thought because of alphabetical order it would be 4-(ethyl-1-methyl) Octane.
@allensmith3424 жыл бұрын
Same confusion here. In an earlier video she said to arrange the constituents in alphabetical order ignoring the "tri." Now the priority has apparently changed without explanation. If you figured this out, any help would be appreciated.
@alexswarbrick9844 жыл бұрын
She's right in the video. It should be 1-methylethyl. The main substituent chain is the ethyl as it is the longer chain and thus goes as the suffix. The prefix is the methyl as it branches off from the main ethyl 'backbone' so to speak. Just as you have the isopropyl group branching off from the octane, if you zoom in on this part of the molecule you have methyl branching from the ethyl part of this chain. Hopefully this helps anyone who's a little unsure.
@Leah4sci9 ай бұрын
alphabetical order applies to multiple substituents. However in a situation like this when you have a substituent ON a substituent, you have to name it as 'sub on parent' in this case it's ethyl ON methyl
