You are literally heaven sent thank you for all you do for us. I realize how lecture isn't as helpful as KZbin. You are the best professor. This is my last semester of Ochem you have been the upmost helpful. May God bless you in ways you would never know. I wish you more success, recognition, and blessings to come your way.

Gosh! I think that my professor's have bribed you. Cuz I didn't liked organic chemistry because its very confusing and all of time. I rather tried memorizing things that ended up in chaos during examination. But after watching your videos i have affection for organic chemistry! hehe. Thanks a lot for making organic chemistry so lucid.

Does the explanation of ALCL3 work for fecl3 or febr3. I mean if I’m explaining the formation of the super electrophile using say cl3 &fecl3 can I also give the explanation of the fecl3 having empty p orbital that the cl2 will attack?

could someone pls explain why aluminum has a free p orbital? since it gives his 3 valence electrons to chlor to have full octet, I don't understand where this free p orbital comes from and would be sooooo happy, if someone could help me with that
@Leah4sci
@Leah4sci 11 ай бұрын
First, a free p orbital means an empty p orbital available to be filled with attacking electrons. If you remember in hybrid orbital theory, a molecule with a central atom like aluminum that forms 3 surrounding bonds is trigonal planar in shape, or sp2 hybridized. Those 3 bonds are formed by the overlap of sp2 hybrid orbitals. The sp2 hybrid orbital is made by the mixing of 1 atomic s orbital and 2 atomic p orbitals. Meaning, the third p orbital on the 3rd energy level of the Aluminum atom is empty and not participating in the hybrid orbitals that create the bonds of this structure.
