Thank you so much Leah, what an inspirational message. I came across your channel today while looking for help with organic chemistry. Today, in particular, I needed to see this video because I was feeling helpless and I was asking myself if I am wasting my time. I am studying for the Irish GAMSAT and I have very little time left (the exam is in less than 3 weeks' time). All the odds are against me - the struggle of coming from a non-science background, non-native speaker, timing, age, life getting in the way and making it nearly impossible to concentrate and find the time to study - but... for some reason I keep going, and your words were very encouraging. Thank you, I will follow you and recommend your videos!

I wish we had KZbin 35yrs ago! We did not have influencers like you at the time when I was asking the same question. I think my career path and trajectory would have been so different. Now that I am wiser, you are so RIGHT...it is how stubborn you are and not just how "smart" you are. I do use that line with my students now. Thanks for this and other videos!

You're very welcome! I've worked with many premed students of every intelligence level. I have smart students who don't make it because they stop trying and 'less than smart' students who are so determined and refuse to give up, they wind up doing EVEN BETTER in med school because they know HOW to work hard and reach their goals. They make the best doctors If medicine is your dream, really consider if you're willing to do whatever it takes, then go for it

Love this entire video….except the “well why don’t you consider nursing”. Nursing model and physician model are very different, apples and oranges and in this context, it sounds as tho nursing is “lesser” rather than “different” As a BSN who went back to school and done with pre-reqs and signed up for MCAT (and struggling, but so what!), that one particular part of this video left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
@tiarrarodrigues5289

I totally understand where you’re coming from, but it seemed like she gave an example of an advisor saying that an individual should try nursing instead of being a doctor. It it unfortunate that nursing is viewed as lesser rather than different.

Heidi, I apologize if the message in this video wasn't clear. I think nursing is a wonderful profession and I personally have quite a few nurse friends. If nursing is your goal then it's a wonderful profession. Nursing in the context of this video is different in that unfortunately many advisors tend to tell their students 'if you are not good enough for medical school go into nursing'. The advisors see it as a 'consolation prize' not understanding that it is an entirely different profession. I'd never knock on nurses!! After all the procedures I've gone through it's the NURSES who were always by my side taking care of me in recovery, both physically and emotionally. They work so hard and are often so under appreciated.

Don’t agree with this. You do have to be smart to get into medical school. Just confront yourself. I’m “neurodivergent” learner with a high IQ. You will struggle in medical school once you’ve gotten in if you haven’t taken a post-bacc before enrolling (you should be scoring 160 or so on the nbme practice exams before starting medical school if you struggled to pass the MCAT).
@Leah4sciMCAT

How about we agree to disagree? This is not just my opinion, this is based on working with many many students, many of whom are of 'average intelligence' but worked really hard. These students are now thriving in med school, residency and beyond. Can't argue with the facts
@adamkatz6532
@adamkatz6532 3 жыл бұрын
I can't agree to disagree. Too important (sorry). your arguments come from self-reporting, and that self-reporting comes from an unreliable source (the medical students themselves). I get to see what actually happens to them. This is actually where I have added experience, not fewer facts, but a more robust understanding (if anything). Take my advice people, I am not saying that Leah isn't well-meaning, but this is your life and you should know what you're getting into financially and psycho-socially. Having said that when you do struggle AND MAKE IT won't that be nice? I have full confidence that you won't need to be a normal learner to succeed in ACTUAL medicine (only academia / USMLE testing). For some people their struggle ends with a lot of debt and nothing to show for their efforts when their student loans are denied on the basis of low scores. If what I am saying doesn't deter you, then you'll make it eventually, but you should hear the truth about the long road ahead.
@antyp.6271
@antyp.6271 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamkatz6532 I'm wondering if your experience is from another country? Most students in the US matriculate into med school without a postbacc and certainly most (if not all) are not taking any practice NBME exams before entering. Also, being approved for student loans is not contingent on obtaining a certain score on an exam.
@adamkatz6532
@adamkatz6532 3 жыл бұрын
@@antyp.6271 you're actually misunderstanding me, which is totally fine. RE:if your experience is from another country? My experience is in the USA. RE:student loans is not contingent on obtaining a certain score on an exam Many american medical schools require their students to pass something called a CBSE which is a USMLE step 1 equivalency exam. It is what medical schools use to "trim the fat" and raise their average USMLE step 1 scores to compete for applicants on subsequent years. My school instituted a course wherein passing the CBSE was tantamount to passing the entire semester. Failing that course meant repeating a year of medical school and jeopardized many student's student loan circumstances. This happened, and you should know about it. RE: Most students... [attend] without a postbacc and certainly most [dont take nbme's first] I am not suggesting that it is common for anyone to take an NBME before attending medical school. I am saying that those of us who struggle with standardized testing(as is the case for me), should highly consider a timeline such as this: (1)pass the MCAT (2)attend an effective post-bacc program (designed specifically to prepare you for material you would see on the step 1 exam) (3) obtain a score of 150 or so on a retired NBME exam a 150 is NOT a passing a score. the difference between a 150 and a 194 (passing) level of medical knowledge is enormous. ENJOY medical school, take it out in small bites. your career will be long and arduous without a solid foundation. In this way you will KNOW that you are unlikely to lose your loans.
